The Tennessee SLS 450 sales and use tax return is filed electronically through the Tennessee Taxpayer Access Point (TNTAP) at tntap.tn.gov, and it is due on the 20th of the month after your reporting period closes. On it you report gross sales, allowable deductions, state tax at the correct rate for each product category, local tax based on where the sale is delivered, the additional state single article tax on expensive items, and any use tax you owe on purchases where sales tax was not collected. A return is required even when you had no sales for the period.1Legal Information Institute. Tenn. Comp. R. and Regs. 1320-05-01-.74 – Taxpayers Reports
Your Filing Frequency and Deadline
Monthly filing is the default. Every registered dealer files for each calendar month unless the Department of Revenue has approved a different schedule. A dealer whose sales and use tax liability has averaged $200 or less per month over twelve consecutive months may request permission to file quarterly or annually instead.1Legal Information Institute. Tenn. Comp. R. and Regs. 1320-05-01-.74 – Taxpayers Reports
Every schedule uses the 20th of the month:
- Monthly filers: the 20th of the month following the reporting period. January sales are due February 20.
- Quarterly filers: January 20, April 20, July 20, and October 20.
- Annual filers: January 20 of the following year.
If a due date lands on a weekend or state holiday, the deadline rolls to the next business day.2Tennessee Department of Revenue. Due Dates and Tax Rates
What to Have Open Before You Log In
Pull your sales ledger for the period, exemption and resale certificates for any nontaxable sales, and records of any business purchases where no Tennessee tax was charged. Also keep a current local rate schedule within reach. TNTAP includes a rate lookup, but having rates on hand helps you confirm what you charged at the point of sale rather than discovering a shortfall after the fact.
Working Through the Return
Gross Sales and Deductions
Enter total gross sales for the period, taxable and nontaxable combined. Then enter deductions: sales for resale backed by a resale certificate, sales to exempt organizations such as qualifying nonprofits or government agencies, returned merchandise, and other legally exempt transactions. Gross sales minus allowable deductions equals your taxable sales.3Tennessee Department of Revenue. Instructions – Tennessee Sales and Use Tax Return
State Rates by Category
The general state rate is 7% on most tangible personal property and taxable services.2Tennessee Department of Revenue. Due Dates and Tax Rates Several categories carry their own rate and must be entered on separate lines so the correct rate applies: food and food ingredients at 4%, aviation fuel at 4.25%, industrial energy fuel for manufacturers at 1.5%, and manufactured homes at 3.5%.4Tennessee Department of Revenue. Single Article Tax on Expensive Items
Tennessee treats high-dollar single items differently. The 7% state rate applies to the full purchase price. Local tax, however, applies only to the first $1,600 of any single article of tangible personal property. An additional state tax of 2.75% then applies to the portion of the price between $1,600.01 and $3,200. Nothing above $3,200 is subject to the additional state single article tax.5Tennessee Department of Revenue. SUT-6 – Single Article Tax – Overview and Application
A single article means one item that common understanding treats as a separate unit, apart from accessories or extra parts, and that could be sold on its own. On a $5,000 piece of equipment you would charge 7% state tax on the full $5,000, the additional 2.75% state tax on the $1,600 between $1,600.01 and $3,200, and local tax only on the first $1,600.5Tennessee Department of Revenue. Local Tax by Delivery Destination
Every county and many cities add a local option sales tax. Local rates cannot exceed 2.75% and are set in increments of 0.25%.6Tennessee Department of Revenue. Local Sales Tax Report local tax using the rate for the jurisdiction where the sale is delivered, not where your business is located. Out-of-state sellers shipping into Tennessee use the destination rate as well.7Tennessee Department of Revenue. SLS 450 Tennessee Sales and Use Tax Return
Use Tax on Your Own Purchases
Use tax is the companion to sales tax. You owe it when your business buys taxable goods or services and the seller did not collect Tennessee tax. An online purchase from a vendor that doesn’t collect for Tennessee counts. So does pulling items from your resale inventory for your own business use. The rate is the same as it would have been at the register.8Tennessee Department of Revenue. Sales and Use Tax Enter these amounts in the use tax section. This is where most mistakes happen, and it is one of the first things auditors check.
Vendor Compensation for Filing on Time
Dealers who file and pay on time receive a credit called vendor compensation equal to 2% of the state tax due, capped at $25 per return. It does not apply to local tax, and a late filing or short payment forfeits the discount for that period.3Tennessee Department of Revenue. Instructions – Tennessee Sales and Use Tax Return
Submitting and Paying
TNTAP totals the return and shows a summary screen. Compare it against your internal numbers before submitting. After you submit, save the confirmation number and download the return summary. Both are your proof of filing if the department has questions later.7Tennessee Department of Revenue. SLS 450 Tennessee Sales and Use Tax Return
Payment is due with the return. TNTAP supports ACH debit, which authorizes the state to pull the exact amount from your business bank account; the full ACH debit transaction must complete by the due date to avoid penalties.9Tennessee Department of Revenue. Tennessee Electronic Payments Guide Credit card payments go through a third-party vendor that charges a processing fee the department does not keep.10Tennessee Department of Revenue. TNTAP Payments-8 – Making an Online Payment in TNTAP If you owe $10,000 or more on a single return, payment must be in immediately available funds: ACH debit, ACH credit, or wire transfer.11Legal Information Institute. Fixing a Return After You File
If you spot an error after submitting, amend the return in TNTAP. Open your sales tax account, click “View/File Returns,” select “View or Amend Return” for the affected period, and click “Amend.” Enter the corrected figures for gross sales, deductions, or local tax.12Tennessee Department of Revenue. TNTAP Tax Returns-6 – Amending a Return in TNTAP
One detail trips people up. The amended return’s summary shows the total tax due for the whole period, not the difference from your original filing. Before you submit, enter the amount you already paid for that period in the “Credit memo balance” line so TNTAP calculates the remaining balance correctly. If the corrected numbers show you underpaid, you owe the additional tax plus any interest. If you overpaid, request a credit or refund through the department.12Tennessee Department of Revenue. What a Late Return Costs
The penalty is 5% of unpaid tax for each 30-day period, or fraction of a period, that the tax remains delinquent, up to a maximum of 25%. Even a zero-tax return filed late carries a minimum penalty of $15.13Justia Law. Tennessee Code 67-1-804 – Delinquency – Dishonor of Check Interest runs on top of penalties. From July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026, the annual interest rate on delinquent tax is 11.50%.14Tennessee Department of Revenue.
