To dispose of old license plates in Texas, deface the front of each plate so the numbers can’t be read, peel off the registration sticker, and then recycle or trash them. Texas does not require you to return standard plates to the Department of Motor Vehicles when you take them off a vehicle. You can also keep them or transfer them to your next car. Specialty plates are the exception and have to go back to the TxDMV.1Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. FAQs
Deface the Plate First
The disposal step that actually matters is making the plate unusable. A readable plate in a recycling bin or dumpster is a ready-made tool for someone dodging tolls, hiding a stolen car, or driving on an expired registration. The TxDMV specifically recommends defacing the front of the plate with permanent black ink or a similar method to prevent fraudulent use.2Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. License Plates
A few ways to do it:
- Black out the plate number with a permanent marker.
- Cut the plate into pieces with tin snips.
- Bend the plate until the numbers are unreadable.
- Drill holes through the plate number.
Before you do any of that, peel off the registration sticker. The sticker ties the plate to a valid registration period, and leaving it on defeats the purpose of defacing the plate. Two minutes with a Sharpie or a pair of snips is enough.
Recycle or Throw Them Away
Texas Transportation Code Section 504.901 says plates removed from a vehicle that aren’t transferred to another vehicle must be disposed of in a manner the department specifies.3State of Texas. Texas Transportation Code 504.901 – Transfer and Removal of License Plates In practice, the department’s guidance is to cut the plates up and put the pieces in the recycle bin.1Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Most Texas plates are stamped aluminum, which recycles well. Recycling aluminum uses roughly 90% less energy than producing it from raw ore, and the metal can be recycled indefinitely without losing quality.4U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Recycling Is the Primary Energy Efficiency Technology for Aluminum and Steel Manufacturing Check with your local curbside program to confirm it accepts scrap metal, because policies vary by municipality. If recycling isn’t available, a defaced plate can go in the regular trash. The defacement is what protects you, not the destination.
Keeping Them Is Fine, Using Them Isn’t
Standard-issue Texas plates belong to you once they come off the vehicle.1Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. FAQs You can hang them in the garage, keep them in a box, or display them as wall art. The only rule is that an old plate cannot be mounted on any vehicle. Texas Transportation Code Section 502.475 makes it a misdemeanor to display registration insignia assigned to a different vehicle, with fines up to $200 for a basic violation and a Class B misdemeanor if you knowingly alter or obscure the plate’s markings.5State of Texas. Transferring Plates Instead of Disposing of Them
If you’re replacing one vehicle with another, you don’t have to dispose of the plates at all. Transferring your existing plates to a new vehicle is free, and the TxDMV encourages it because it prevents someone else from being assigned your old plate number. Your county tax assessor-collector’s office handles the transfer and issues a new registration sticker for the new vehicle. General-issue plates can only be transferred to passenger vehicles and trucks weighing one ton or less.2Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. License Plates Remember to remove the registration sticker from the old windshield when you pull the plates.
Specialty and Personalized Plates Must Be Returned
Specialty plates work differently. Under Texas Transportation Code Section 504.008, if you sell the vehicle a specialty plate is attached to, or if you lose eligibility for the plate for any reason, you must return it to the TxDMV.3State of Texas. Texas Transportation Code 504.901 – Transfer and Removal of License Plates That covers plates issued for specific qualifications, such as disabled veteran plates. You also cannot transfer a specialty plate to another person or vehicle without department approval.
Personalized plates with custom letter-number combinations count as specialty plates, and the TxDMV does not offer refunds because they are custom-manufactured to order.2Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. License Plates If you aren’t sure whether your particular plate triggers a return requirement, contact the TxDMV before throwing it out. Discarding a plate you were supposed to return puts you out of compliance with state law.
What Happens When You Trade a Vehicle to a Dealer
When you sell or trade a vehicle to a dealership, Texas Administrative Code Section 217.53 requires the dealer to remove and retain any general-issue plates for use in a subsequent sale, and to dispose of the registration sticker.6Legal Information Institute. 43 Texas Admin Code 217.53 – Disposition of License Plates and Registration Insignia Upon Sale or Transfer of Motor Vehicle If you want to transfer the plates to your next vehicle, pull them off before you hand over the keys. Confirm with the dealer either way. Leaving your plates on a trade-in and assuming everything will sort itself out is where mix-ups happen.
