To donate a car in NJ, sign the back of your Certificate of Ownership over to a 501(c)(3) charity, remove and surrender your license plates at a Motor Vehicle Commission agency, and keep the charity’s Form 1098-C for your tax return. The federal deduction only helps if you itemize, meaning your total deductions clear the standard deduction — $16,100 for single filers or $32,200 for married couples filing jointly in 2026.1Internal Revenue Service. Confirm the Charity Qualifies
Only gifts to organizations with 501(c)(3) status under the Internal Revenue Code produce a federal charitable deduction.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 501 – Exemption From Tax on Corporations, Certain Trusts, Etc. Groups organized under other subsections, such as 501(c)(4) civic leagues, generally don’t qualify, even when they actively solicit vehicles.3Internal Revenue Service. Donations to Section 501(c)(4) Organizations
Verify the charity through the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search, which shows current status and the Pub. 78 data for organizations eligible to receive deductible contributions.4Internal Revenue Service. Clear Any Lien Before You Transfer
You cannot donate a car with an active lien on the title. If a loan is still open, pay it off and get a lien-free title first. The NJ MVC accepts either the original title endorsed by the lienholder or a dated lien satisfaction letter on official company letterhead that includes your name, the VIN, and the vehicle’s year and make.5NJ.gov. Liens
With that documentation, you can request a lien-free title at any MVC agency or by mail for a $60 fee. If the lienholder is an individual rather than a financial institution, the lien satisfaction letter must be notarized.5NJ.gov. Liens The mail route can take a few weeks, so build in time if you’re trying to close a donation before year-end.
Sign the Title Over to the Charity
Pull your New Jersey Certificate of Ownership and check that the VIN on the title matches the number on the dashboard and driver-side door jamb. On the back of the title, complete the assignment section with the charity’s full legal name and address in the buyer section, the date of transfer, the sale price (write “donation” or “$0”), and the current odometer reading. Your signature has to match the name printed on the front of the title. If the odometer is inaccurate or has rolled over, give your best estimate of the actual mileage.6NJ.gov. Transferring Vehicle Ownership For a standard NJ-to-NJ transfer, your signature does not need to be notarized.
Pull Your Plates and Surrender Them
In New Jersey, plates belong to the person, not the vehicle. Take them off before the tow truck arrives. You can then surrender them at any MVC agency or transfer them to another vehicle you own in the same class (car to car, truck to truck). If you aren’t moving them to another vehicle, surrender is mandatory.7NJ MVC. Plates
Ask for a surrender receipt and keep it. It’s your proof that you’re no longer tied to the vehicle’s registration, which protects you from parking tickets, tolls, and accident liability after the car leaves your hands.
Schedule Pickup and the Handoff
Once the title and plate steps are set, call the charity or its vehicle processor to schedule towing. Most charities contract with tow services and will come to your home. Park the car where it can be reached from the street so the driver isn’t working around other vehicles.
At pickup, hand over the signed title and keys. The driver generally checks the VIN against the paperwork and notes the car’s condition. Ask for a written pickup receipt on the spot. This isn’t the formal tax acknowledgment you’ll use later, but it fixes the date the vehicle left your possession, which matters for insurance and liability.
Cancel Insurance in the Right Order
Sequence matters here. Surrender the plates (or transfer them) at the MVC first. Only then cancel the coverage on the donated car. Dropping insurance before the state’s records show you’ve relinquished the vehicle can expose you to registration penalties and liability during the gap.
On a multi-vehicle policy, call your insurer to remove just the donated car. Depending on the policy, dropping the vehicle mid-term may produce a small refund for the unused premium.
What You Can Actually Deduct
The deduction amount depends almost entirely on what the charity does with the car. If it sells the vehicle, which is the usual outcome, your deduction is capped at the gross sale proceeds, not what you think the car is worth.8Internal Revenue Service. IRS Guidance Explains Rules for Vehicle Donations A car you’d price at $4,000 might fetch $800 at auction. Your deduction is $800.
You can claim fair market value only when the charity does one of the following:
- Uses the vehicle significantly in its programs, such as delivering meals or transporting clients.
- Makes material improvements, meaning substantial mechanical work that genuinely raises the value, not a wash and detailing.
- Gives or sells the car to a person in need at well below market price as part of its charitable mission.
If the vehicle is worth $500 or less, these limits don’t apply. You claim the fair market value, or what the charity sells it for if that’s higher, up to $500.8Internal Revenue Service. IRS Guidance Explains Rules for Vehicle Donations For older high-mileage cars in rough condition, this is a common scenario and the paperwork is simpler.
The Forms: 1098-C, 8283, and Written Acknowledgments
After the charity sells your car or begins using it, it must send you Form 1098-C (or an equivalent written acknowledgment) within 30 days of the sale date. If the charity keeps or gives away the car instead of selling it, the 30-day clock starts from the donation date.9Internal Revenue Service. Form 1098-C (Rev. April 2025) The form reports the gross sale proceeds or confirms the charity’s planned use or improvement, and that figure drives the number on your return.
If your vehicle deduction is over $500, you file Form 8283 (Noncash Charitable Contributions) with your federal return and attach your Form 1098-C.10Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8283 (Rev. December 2025) Form 8283 asks for the charity’s name, the vehicle’s year, make, model, condition, mileage, and VIN.11Internal Revenue Service. Form 8283 (Rev. December 2025)
For deductions between $250 and $500, Form 8283 isn’t required, but you need a written acknowledgment from the charity showing the donation date, a description of the vehicle, and a statement about whether you received anything in return.12Internal Revenue Service. Gifts and Charitable Contributions Keep it with your records. You don’t attach it at that level.
If your claimed deduction exceeds $5,000 and is based on fair market value rather than gross sale proceeds, you also need a qualified written appraisal completed no earlier than 60 days before the donation date.13Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8283 When the deduction is capped at gross sale proceeds, which is the more common situation, no appraisal is required regardless of the amount.
You Have to Itemize for It to Matter
A charitable car donation only reduces your taxes if you itemize on Schedule A. If your mortgage interest, state taxes, medical expenses, and charitable gifts together don’t exceed the standard deduction, the donation produces no tax benefit at all. For 2026, the standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers, $32,200 for married couples filing jointly, and $24,150 for heads of household.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 Most taxpayers take the standard deduction, so most vehicle donations don’t lower a tax bill. The car still goes, the charity still benefits, but the deduction line stays at zero.
Even when you itemize, noncash contributions valued at fair market value can’t exceed 30% of your adjusted gross income. Noncash donations limited to sale proceeds generally fall under a 50% AGI ceiling. Anything above the applicable limit carries forward for up to five additional tax years. If the car is valuable relative to your income, run the numbers with a tax professional before assuming the full deduction lands in a single year.
