How to File a Federal Tax Extension in Tennessee

To file a federal tax extension in Tennessee, submit IRS Form 4868 by April 15, which gives you until October 15 to file your return. Tennessee has no state income tax on earned income, so for most residents the federal extension is the only extension you need.1Tennessee Department of Revenue. GEN-34 – Income Tax Withholding The catch worth knowing up front: an extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. Any balance you owe is still due April 15.2Internal Revenue Service. Three Ways to Get the Extension

You have three practical routes, and all three produce the same result.

E-File Form 4868 for Free

IRS Free File handles Form 4868 at no cost, and it’s open to every taxpayer regardless of income.3Internal Revenue Service. File an Extension Through IRS Free File Commercial tax software can also e-file the request. Either way, the IRS sends back electronic confirmation that your extension was received.

Mail a Paper Form 4868

Tennessee residents filing on paper send the completed form to the Internal Revenue Service, Austin, TX 73301-0045.4Internal Revenue Service. Pay Electronically and Skip the Form

If you already know you owe and plan to pay, you don’t need to file Form 4868 at all. Make an electronic payment by April 15 through IRS Direct Pay, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, or an authorized card processor, and select “Form 4868” as the payment type. The IRS processes the extension automatically when the payment goes through.6Internal Revenue Service. Make an Electronic Payment and Get an Automatic Extension of Time to File For many filers this is the cleanest path.

What Form 4868 Asks For

The form itself is short. You provide your legal name, address, and Social Security number. Nonresident and resident aliens without an SSN can enter an ITIN or write “ITIN TO BE REQUESTED” in that field.5Internal Revenue Service. The form also wants three numbers: your estimated total tax liability for the year, what you’ve already paid through withholding and estimated payments, and the difference. That difference is your balance due. The IRS won’t void your extension for an honest estimate that turns out to be off, but if your estimate undershoots your actual liability by more than 10%, you lose the presumption of reasonable cause for late-payment penalties.7eCFR. 26 CFR 301.6651-1 – Failure to File Tax Return or to Pay Tax It pays to work from real documents rather than guessing.

Paying What You Owe by April 15

Getting money to the IRS by the April deadline is the single most effective way to limit penalties and interest.

IRS Direct Pay moves funds straight from a checking or savings account at no cost. When you set it up, choose “Extension” as the reason and “4868” as the form type so the payment links to your extension.8Internal Revenue Service. Types of Payments Available to Individuals Through Direct Pay Hold onto the confirmation number as proof.

Credit and debit card payments go through IRS-authorized processors and carry convenience fees, typically 2.49% to 2.95% of the payment amount for credit cards.9Internal Revenue Service. Pay by Debit or Credit Card When You E-File On a large balance, that cost adds up fast, so Direct Pay is usually the better call if you can manage it.

Penalties and Interest If You Don’t Pay

Interest accrues on any unpaid balance from April 15 forward, no matter what. The underpayment rate adjusts quarterly; for the first two quarters of 2026, it’s 7% and then 6%.10Internal Revenue Service. Quarterly Interest Rates An extension doesn’t pause the interest clock.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6601 – Interest on Underpayment, Nonpayment, or Extensions of Time for Payment, of Tax

Two separate penalties can stack on top of interest:

  • The failure-to-pay penalty runs 0.5% of unpaid tax per month, capped at 25%. If you file on time (including with an extension) and set up an installment agreement, the rate drops to 0.25% per month.12Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6651 – Failure to File Tax Return or to Pay Tax
  • The failure-to-file penalty runs 5% of unpaid tax per month, also capped at 25%. That’s ten times steeper than the failure-to-pay penalty, which is exactly why filing the extension is worth doing even if you can’t pay a cent.13Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty

When both penalties hit the same month, the failure-to-file penalty is reduced by the failure-to-pay amount, so the combined bite is 5% per month rather than 5.5%.13Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty File the extension regardless of whether you can pay. The filing penalty alone can reach a quarter of your balance in five months.

The 90% Safe Harbor

If you file a valid extension and your payments (withholding, estimated payments, and anything sent with the extension) cover at least 90% of what your final return shows you owe, the IRS presumes reasonable cause for the shortfall during the extension period. That presumption shields you from the failure-to-pay penalty as long as you cover the remaining balance when you file.7eCFR. 26 CFR 301.6651-1 – Failure to File Tax Return or to Pay Tax Interest still runs, but the penalty disappears. Fall below 90% and the penalty applies from April 15.

Automatic Relief You Don’t Have to Request

Some Tennesseans qualify for deadline postponements without filing anything.

Winter Storm Fern Counties

Federal law lets the IRS postpone deadlines for taxpayers in federally declared disaster areas, and the relief applies automatically based on your address of record.14Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 7508A – Authority to Postpone Certain Deadlines by Reason of Federally Declared Disaster, Significant Fire, or Terroristic or Military Actions For Winter Storm Fern, the IRS has given taxpayers in 23 Tennessee counties until May 22, 2026, to file returns and make payments otherwise due between January 22 and May 22, 2026. The covered counties are Cheatham, Chester, Clay, Davidson, Decatur, Dickson, Hardeman, Hardin, Henderson, Hickman, Lawrence, Lewis, Macon, Maury, McNairy, Perry, Robertson, Rutherford, Sumner, Trousdale, Wayne, Williamson, and Wilson.15Internal Revenue Service. IRS Announces Tax Relief for Taxpayers Impacted by Winter Storm Fern in Tennessee – Various Deadlines Postponed to May 22, 2026 Quarterly estimated payments falling in that window are also pushed to May 22, and payroll and excise deposits due between January 22 and February 6 escape penalty as long as they were made by February 6.

Disaster declarations change often. Check the IRS disaster relief page before relying on any specific postponement.

Overseas and Military Filers

U.S. citizens and resident aliens living or stationed outside the country on April 15 get an automatic two-month extension to June 15 without filing any form. Attach a statement to your eventual return explaining that you qualified.16Internal Revenue Service. Automatic 2-Month Extension of Time to File Interest still runs from April 15 on any balance, but you avoid the failure-to-file penalty through June 15. Need more time? File Form 4868 to push the deadline to October 15.

Service members in a designated combat zone or contingency operation get a broader postponement: the entire time in the zone, plus 180 days after leaving, is disregarded for filing, paying, and most other tax deadlines.17Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 7508 – Time for Performing Certain Acts Postponed by Reason of Service in Combat Zone or Contingency Operation The IRS applies this automatically from Department of Defense records; no form required.

A Note on Business Returns

Form 4868 is only for individual income tax returns. If you need an extension for a partnership, S corporation, C corporation, estate, or trust return, use Form 7004 instead. It also provides an automatic six-month extension and covers returns like Form 1065, Form 1120, and Form 1041.18Internal Revenue Service. About Form 7004, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File Certain Business Income Tax, Information, and Other Returns The mailing address depends on the return type and the entity’s total assets, so check the IRS Form 7004 filing instructions before mailing.19Internal Revenue Service. Where to File Form 7004 The same rule applies: the extension buys time to file, not time to pay.
