How to File an Arizona Amended Tax Return (Form 140X)

To fix a mistake on a filed Arizona state income tax return, submit an Arizona amended tax return on Form 140X to the Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR). You can e-file it or mail it, and if you’re claiming a refund you have four years from the later of your original filing date or the original due date to get it in.1Arizona Legislature. When You Should Amend

Amend any time the original return had information that changes what you owe or what ADOR owes you. Typical triggers: a corrected W-2 or K-1 arriving after you filed, the wrong filing status, a missed deduction or credit, or misreported income.

One trigger catches people off guard. If the IRS adjusts your federal return, Arizona law requires you to report that change to ADOR under A.R.S. 43-327. Arizona starts from your federal adjusted gross income, so a federal change almost always shifts your state liability too. File the amendment promptly once the federal adjustment is final rather than waiting for ADOR to catch it.

Which Form to Use

Most individuals use Form 140X, the Individual Amended Income Tax Return. It covers amendments to returns originally filed on Form 140, 140A, 140EZ, 140NR, or 140PY.2Arizona Department of Revenue. Arizona Form 140X Instructions

If your original return was a small business income tax return (140-SBI, 140NR-SBI, or 140PY-SBI), use Form 140X-SBI instead.3Arizona Department of Revenue. Small Business Amended Income Tax Return Forms The layout is the same; the calculation is tailored to those filers.

Filling Out Form 140X

Pull your original return, all the schedules you filed with it, and any new paperwork that supports the correction before you start. Form 140X uses three columns on each line: the amount you originally reported, the change (plus or minus), and the corrected figure. Work through each affected line that way. Arizona’s flat 2.5% rate applies regardless of filing status, so recalculating the tax on a corrected income figure is straightforward.4Arizona Department of Revenue. There’s a section for explaining why you’re amending. Be specific. “Correcting income” won’t do. Something like “Received corrected W-2 from employer showing $3,000 additional wages” tells ADOR what happened and cuts down on follow-up.

Attach every schedule or form that changed, plus supporting documents: corrected W-2s, updated 1099s, new Arizona credit forms. If a federal adjustment triggered the amendment, include the IRS notice or your federal amended return. Missing attachments is one of the most common reasons an amendment stalls.

How to Submit It

Deadline for Claiming a Refund

Refund amendments must be filed within four years from the date the original return was filed or four years from the original due date, whichever is later.1Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 42-1104 – Statute of Limitation; Exceptions Miss that window and the refund is gone, no matter how clearly you overpaid.

If you owe more tax, there’s no advantage to waiting. Interest and penalties run from the original due date, not from when you spot the mistake. Sooner is cheaper.

Penalties and Interest If You Underpaid

When an amendment shows an underpayment, ADOR charges a late-payment penalty of 0.5% of the unpaid tax per month or partial month, capped at 10%. If a failure-to-file penalty applies for the same period, the combined penalties are capped at 25%.6Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 42-1125 – Civil Penalties; Definition You can ask for a penalty waiver by showing reasonable cause, though ADOR grants those selectively.
