How to File for a Lost Title in Alabama: Methods, Fees, and Bonds

To file for a lost title in Alabama, submit an Application for Replacement Certificate of Title to the Alabama Department of Revenue’s Motor Vehicle Division, either online through the Public Title Portal, in person through a designated agent, or by mail, along with a non-refundable $15 fee. Most replacements are issued within 10 to 15 business days once the paperwork checks out.

Who Is Allowed to Apply

Alabama limits who can request a duplicate. If no lien is on the vehicle, the owner named on the original title, or that owner’s legal representative, may apply. If a lienholder is on record, an authorized representative of the lienholder must complete the application unless the owner provides a separate lien release proving the loan has been paid off.1Alabama Administrative Code. Rule 810-5-75-.15 – Application For Replacement Certificate Of Title

This is where applications get rejected. If your lender still shows on the title and you file without involving them, the request will bounce back.

What to Gather Before You File

You will need the vehicle’s 17-digit VIN and the Alabama license plate number currently assigned to it. The application also asks for the full legal names and current mailing addresses of every owner listed on the previous title. Any mismatch between what you write and what the state has on file can slow the application or get it kicked back, so check your registration first.

If a lien was recorded on the lost title, there are two paths. If the loan is still active, the lienholder needs to be part of the application. If the loan has been paid off, get a formal lien release from the lender and submit it with your application so the replacement comes back free and clear.2Alabama Department of Revenue. The Three Ways to Submit

Online Through the Public Title Portal

The fastest option is the Public Title Portal. You complete the application, upload supporting documents, and pay the $15 fee by credit card or electronic check through the portal’s secure payment system.3Alabama Department of Revenue. Through a Designated Agent

You can apply in person through a designated agent. In Alabama, designated agents include county license plate issuing officials, licensed Alabama motor vehicle dealers, and financial institutions such as banks and credit unions located in the state.4Alabama Department of Revenue. Title Applications Your local county tag office is the most common choice, and it’s a useful route if you want help walking through the paperwork.

By Mail

Paper applications go to the Alabama Department of Revenue’s Titles and Vehicle Inspections section at P.O. Box 327640, Montgomery, AL 36132-7640.5Alabama Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicle Include the $15 fee as a certified check or money order payable to the department. The department notes that priority mail should not be sent to the physical address. Mail is the slowest route because delivery time gets added on both ends.

The Fee

Alabama charges $15 per replacement title application, and the fee is non-refundable whether or not the application is approved.3Alabama Department of Revenue. How Long It Takes and Where It Goes

The Motor Vehicle Division typically issues titles within 10 to 15 business days from the date it receives a complete, correct application. Once issued, allow another three to five business days for mail delivery.7Alabama Department of Revenue. How Long Does It Take to Receive an Alabama Title Errors on the application and missing lien releases are the most common reasons for delays.

If a lienholder is still active on the vehicle’s record, the replacement title is mailed to that financial institution rather than to you.1Alabama Administrative Code. Rule 810-5-75-.15 – Application For Replacement Certificate Of Title

The Legend on Your Replacement Title

Your replacement won’t look exactly like the original. Alabama law requires every replacement certificate to carry a printed legend that reads: “This is a replacement certificate of title and may be subject to the rights of a person under the original certificate.”1Alabama Administrative Code. Rule 810-5-75-.15 – Application For Replacement Certificate Of Title The language warns anyone who sees the title that an original existed and someone holding it could claim rights in the vehicle. It rarely causes problems for legitimate owners, but it’s the reason to destroy the original if it later turns up. Two live titles for the same vehicle invite disputes.

If Your Title Is an Electronic Lien and Title (ELT)

Alabama participates in Electronic Lien and Title, where the title record is held digitally rather than on paper while a lienholder is involved. If your current title is an Alabama ELT, you can have a physical title printed at no cost. That free print is a one-time event. Once the ELT has been printed onto physical title paper, it cannot be printed again, and any further replacement requires a standard application with the $15 fee.8Alabama Department of Revenue. Does Alabama Issue Electronic Lien and Title (ELT) If you aren’t sure whether your title is an ELT, your lender or the Motor Vehicle Division can confirm.

If Someone Else Has to File for You

Alabama allows a power of attorney when the owner can’t handle the application personally. The department’s Secure Power of Attorney form (MVT 8-4) authorizes an agent to apply for a replacement certificate, and, if needed, to endorse and transfer the title and disclose mileage on the owner’s behalf. The form can only be used when the title is physically held by a lienholder or has been lost.9Alabama Department of Revenue. Secure Power of Attorney MVT 8-4 The person exercising the power of attorney must submit the form to the state themselves.

When the Regular Process Won’t Work: Title Surety Bonds

Sometimes a standard replacement isn’t available. If you bought a vehicle but the title was never transferred to your name, or the department isn’t satisfied that you own the vehicle or that no undisclosed liens exist, you may need a title surety bond instead.10Alabama Department of Revenue. Surety Bond This is a different track from a lost-title replacement, and it applies when ownership itself is what’s in question.

The bonded title process works like this:

  • Submit an electronic request for the Application for Title Surety Bond (form MVT 10-1A) through the department’s Surety Bond Portal.
  • If approved, complete the Certificate of Title Surety Bond form (MVT 10-1) with the insurance company issuing the bond.
  • Apply for a certificate of title through a designated agent within 90 days of the bond’s execution date.

The bond guarantees that if someone else turns out to be the rightful owner, the surety company will cover the loss. The 90-day filing deadline after obtaining the bond is firm.

Don’t Cut Corners: Title Fraud Is a Felony

Alabama treats title fraud seriously. Using a false name or address, making a material false statement, failing to disclose a lien, or concealing any other material fact on a title application is a Class C felony. The same charge applies to anyone who forges, alters, or counterfeits a certificate of title, or knowingly possesses one that has been tampered with.11Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code Title 32 Chapter 8 Article 1 Section 32-8-12 – Offenses Constituting Felonies A Class C felony carries up to 10 years in prison. Applying for a replacement on a vehicle you don’t own, or hiding an active lien to get a clean title, falls squarely within these statutes.
