How to File for Unemployment in Alabama: Online or by Phone

To file for unemployment in Alabama, submit an initial claim through the Alabama Department of Labor’s online portal at initialclaims.labor.alabama.gov or by calling 1-866-234-5382, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.1Alabama Department of Labor. What to Have Ready Before You File

  • Your Social Security number and a valid photo ID such as a driver’s license, state-issued ID, or passport.2Alabama Department of Labor. Identity Verification Portal
  • If you are not a U.S. citizen, your Alien Registration number and its expiration date.
  • The legal names, mailing addresses, and exact employment dates for every employer you worked for during the past 18 months, plus the specific reason you left each job.
  • Your gross earnings from your last week of work, including any vacation pay or severance pay you received or expect to receive.
  • Your bank’s routing number and account number if you want direct deposit. Alabama also offers a prepaid debit card if you prefer not to use a bank account.

Errors in employer names or dates are the most common reason claims stall during the initial review. Check them against old pay stubs or W-2 forms before you begin.

The Unpaid Waiting Week

Alabama requires an unpaid waiting week at the start of every new claim. You still have to file a weekly certification for that first week, and it has to meet all the requirements to be payable, but no money is issued for it. Nothing is deducted from your total benefit amount for the waiting week either, so it doesn’t shrink your overall payout.4Alabama Department of Labor. What Is the Waiting Week and Will I Receive Payment for It

Certifying Each Week

Every week you want a payment, you must file a weekly certification confirming that you were able to work, available for full-time work, and did not refuse any job offers during that week. You also report any earnings, including from part-time or temporary work. If you certify before 5:00 p.m., your payment is typically issued the next business day, though you should allow 48 hours for the bank or debit card to process it.5Workforce Alabama. Registering with AlabamaWorks and Searching for Work

You have to register with the Alabama Career Center system, either in person or online at alabamaworks.workforce.alabama.gov. Your registration must remain active during every week you draw benefits, and it expires after 90 days, at which point you need to renew it.6Alabama Department of Labor. Alabama Unemployment Compensation Benefit Rights and Responsibilities You’re expected to log in to AlabamaWorks or visit a local Career Center at least once a week and make a minimum of three job contacts per week. Falling short on those records can get your benefits suspended.

Reporting Part-Time Work and Other Income

Part-time or reduced-hour work doesn’t automatically disqualify you. If your gross weekly earnings are less than your weekly benefit amount, you receive a reduced payment for that week. If your gross weekly earnings equal or exceed your weekly benefit amount, no payment is issued for that week.7Alabama Department of Labor. A Note on Eligibility

Filing is a separate question from qualifying. Alabama runs two tests: a monetary test based on wages during your base period, and a separation test based on why you left your job.9Alabama Department of Labor. If Your Claim Is Denied

A denial arrives as a written Notice of Determination explaining the reason. You have 15 calendar days from the date the notice was mailed to file a written appeal, or 7 calendar days if the notice was delivered in person. Missing either deadline generally forfeits your right to challenge the decision.12Alabama Department of Labor. How Do I Appeal an Examiner’s Determination on a Claim for Benefits

Your appeal letter must be signed and include your full name, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and the reason you disagree with the decision. Submit it by mail, fax, or through the online portal. Mail or fax appeals go to:

Hearings and Appeals Division
649 Monroe Street, Room 4677
Montgomery, Alabama 36131
Fax: (334) 956-5891

After the appeal is filed, a hearing is scheduled before an Administrative Law Judge. You and your former employer can both present evidence and testimony, and the judge issues a written decision afterward. Having your documentation organized before that hearing is where most cases are won or lost.
