Check That You Qualify Before You File

Two things decide whether Colorado will approve a claim: how much you earned recently and why you left your last job.

Earnings and the Base Period

CDLE looks at your wages during a base period, which is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before the week you file.2Department of Labor & Employment. Glossary of UI Terms and Definitions You need at least $2,500 in total wages during that period to establish a valid claim.3Department of Labor & Employment. Eligibility for UI Benefits If the standard base period leaves you short, Colorado will check an alternative base period made up of the last four completed calendar quarters, which pulls in more recent earnings.4Department of Labor & Employment. How You Left the Job

Benefits are for people out of work through no fault of their own: layoffs, reductions in force, and closures are the cleanest cases. A firing for work-related misconduct, or a quit without good cause tied to the employer, can reduce your total benefit or delay payments. Some voluntary quits still qualify under the same statute, including leaving over an unreasonable pay cut or unsafe conditions.5Justia. Colorado Code 8-73-108 – Benefit Awards – Definitions The division reviews the facts of each separation.

Staying Eligible Week to Week

Meeting the wage and separation rules gets you in the door. To keep drawing benefits, you must be physically able to work, available for suitable work, and actively looking every week.6Justia. Colorado Code 8-73-107 – Eligibility Conditions

What to Have Ready

Gather your documents before you open the application. You will need:

  • Your Social Security number.
  • A U.S. driver’s license, state ID, U.S. passport, or U.S. passport card.7Department of Labor & Employment. Verify Your Identity with ID.me
  • Your employment history for the last 18 months, with each employer’s legal name and address, your start and end dates, your rate of pay, and the reason you left.8Department of Labor & Employment. Applying for UI Benefits
  • A payment preference: a state-issued debit card or direct deposit to a personal bank account.

A camera-equipped smartphone or a computer with a webcam is also required, because you will use it for identity verification.

Submit the Claim Through MyUI+

The primary filing channel is the MyUI+ portal, linked from the CDLE website.9Department of Labor & Employment. File a Claim After signing in or creating an ID.me account, you will move through several screens entering your personal information, employment history, and payment preference. Check every employer name and date on the confirmation screens before submitting. Errors here are one of the most common reasons a claim stalls in processing.

If you cannot file online, call CDLE customer support at 303-318-9000 or toll-free at 1-800-388-5515.9Department of Labor & Employment. File a Claim Phone filers verify their identity in person through the U.S. Postal Service instead of using the online ID.me process.

Once you submit, the system generates a confirmation number. Save it. It documents your filing date, which sets when your claim period begins. Initial processing usually takes four to six weeks, and complicated claims can take longer.10Department of Labor & Employment. UI Claimant Guide CDLE contacts each employer you listed to confirm the details of your separation during that window.

Verifying Your Identity Through ID.me

Every online claimant has to verify identity through ID.me before a claim can be processed. You will upload a photo of your ID and record a live video selfie.7Department of Labor & Employment. Verify Your Identity with ID.me If the automated system cannot verify you, ID.me offers a video call with a live representative, called a Trusted Referee, to finish the process. Payments will not release until verification is complete, so handle this step the same day you file if you can.

The First Week After You File

Register With Connecting Colorado

Within one week of filing, register with Connecting Colorado, the state’s job-matching system, either online or at a local workforce center.11Department of Labor & Employment. Getting You Back to Work Skipping the registration can suspend your benefits until you complete it. If you are on a temporary layoff with a return date or otherwise qualify for an exemption, CDLE will tell you.

Request Payment Every Week

Payments do not arrive automatically. Starting on the Sunday of the effective date of your claim, and every Sunday after, log into MyUI+ and file a payment request.12Department of Labor & Employment. Maintaining Your UI Eligibility You will confirm you were able, available, and looking for work, and you will report all hours worked and gross earnings for that week even if you earned only a dollar. Keep filing weekly while your claim is still under review; do not wait for a determination.

Log Your Work Search

Each week, keep records of your job search activities. CDLE recommends at least five per week, and these can include applications, interviews, networking events, and workforce center visits. Note the employer name, date, contact method, and result for every activity. Your claim can be audited up to two years from its start date, and a claimant who cannot produce documentation can be denied benefits and required to repay what was already paid.13Department of Labor & Employment. How Much You Will Receive and for How Long

Your weekly benefit amount is roughly 55 percent of the average weekly wage you earned during your base period.14Department of Labor & Employment. Amount of UI Benefits The state caps the weekly amount at $844.15Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. UI Trust Fund Status Report There is no published minimum, so low base-period wages produce a proportionally low weekly amount.

Standard benefits run up to 26 weeks within a one-year claim period.16Department of Labor & Employment. UI Glossary of Commonly Used Terms The first eligible week is an unpaid waiting week. You still have to file a payment request for it, but no money comes for that week; payments start the second eligible week.1Department of Labor & Employment. Working Part Time While on a Claim

A part-time job does not automatically end your benefits. If you work fewer than 32 hours in a week and earn less than your weekly benefit amount, you can still collect a partial payment.17Department of Labor & Employment. Working and Collecting Earnings up to 50 percent of your weekly benefit amount do not reduce your check at all. Earnings above that 50 percent line reduce your benefit dollar for dollar. If your earnings equal or exceed your full weekly benefit, you receive nothing for that week. Work search and reporting rules still apply.

Taxes on Your Benefits

Unemployment benefits are taxable at both the federal and state level. When you file, you can choose to have 10 percent of each payment withheld for federal income taxes, or you can pay at tax time. You are allowed to switch between withholding and pay-later once during your claim, but only once. By the end of the following January, CDLE will send you IRS Form 1099-G showing total benefits paid and any tax withheld.14Department of Labor & Employment. Amount of UI Benefits If you skip withholding, set money aside so the bill does not surprise you.

If Your Claim Is Denied

You have 20 calendar days from the date on the Notice of Determination to file an appeal.18Department of Labor & Employment. Submit an Appeal When the 20th day is a weekend or legal holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. Missing it forfeits your right to appeal, so file even if you are still gathering evidence.

The Appeals Section will schedule a phone hearing before a hearing officer. Both you and your former employer receive a packet of the relevant documents in advance, and you are required to have that packet with you during the call. You also have to check in by phone no later than 2 p.m. Mountain Time the calendar day before your hearing, weekends included. The written decision is typically mailed within four to six weeks of the appeal being filed, and a further appeal to the Industrial Claim Appeals Office is available if you disagree.19Department of Labor & Employment. Overpayments and Fraud

If CDLE later determines it paid you more than you should have received, you will get a notice with the amount and your repayment options. When the overpayment was not your fault, you can request a waiver: Colorado regulations allow the division to waive recovery when the overpayment did not result from false statements or a deliberate failure to report material facts, and requiring repayment would be unfair.20LII / Legal Information Institute. Waiver of Recovery

Fraud is a different category. Intentional misrepresentation, such as hiding earnings or claiming to search for work when you are not, brings repayment plus a penalty, a multi-week disqualification from future benefits, and in serious cases criminal fines and jail time. Report earnings and job search activity accurately on every weekly claim.
