How to File for Unemployment in Florida: CONNECT, Eligibility, Payments

To file for unemployment in Florida, you submit a claim online through the CONNECT system at FloridaJobs.org, which is run by FloridaCommerce and available around the clock.1FloridaJobs.org. Claimants The program pays a maximum of $275 per week for up to 12 weeks, so getting the application right the first time matters. Before you start, you need to know whether you qualify, what documents you’ll need, and what you must do each week after you file to keep benefits coming.

Who Qualifies for Benefits

Florida applies two tests: one based on your earnings, one based on how you lost your job.

On the earnings side, the state looks at your base period, which is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file. You need at least $3,400 in total wages during that window, and your total base period wages must equal at least 1.5 times your wages in your single highest-earning quarter.2Florida Senate. Florida Code 443.091 – Eligibility for Benefits One strong quarter surrounded by low ones can fail that 1.5x rule.

On the job-loss side, you must be unemployed through no fault of your own. Quitting disqualifies you unless you had “good cause” tied to your employer’s actions, your own illness or disability, a military spouse’s reassignment, or circumstances related to domestic violence.3Online Sunshine. Florida Statutes 443.101 – Disqualification Dislike of your pay or commute isn’t good cause.

If you were fired for misconduct, the disqualification is severe. Florida defines misconduct to include conscious disregard of your employer’s interests, deliberate violation of reasonable workplace standards, damaging employer property worth more than $50, or theft.4Online Sunshine. Florida Statutes 443.036 – Definitions A misconduct disqualification lasts until you find new work and earn at least 17 times your weekly benefit amount.3Online Sunshine. Florida Statutes 443.101 – Disqualification At the $275 maximum weekly benefit, that’s roughly $4,675 in new wages before you could collect.

You also have to be physically able to work and ready to accept a suitable job throughout your benefit period.

What to Have Ready Before You Start

CONNECT times out during periods of inactivity, and pausing mid-application to hunt for a document is the most common source of delays. Gather everything first.

  • Your Social Security number.
  • Employment history for the past 18 months, including each employer’s official name, full mailing address, Federal Employer Identification Number, and your exact start and end dates.5FloridaJobs.org. Apply for Benefits
  • The reason for each separation. The application uses specific codes for layoffs, discharges, and labor disputes, and picking the wrong one can trigger an investigation that stalls your claim.
  • Your bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit.

Military veterans need a DD-214 (Member Copy 2 or 4). Federal employees need an SF-8, SF-50, and either a W-2 or a Leave and Earnings Statement. Union members should have the union name, hall number, and phone number.6FloridaJobs.org. What Information and Documents Do I Need to Have Ready Before Starting My Application

Filing Through CONNECT

Go to FloridaJobs.org and create a claimant account with a secure PIN. That PIN becomes your electronic signature for everything that follows.

Once you’re in, the system walks you through screens for employment history, separation details, and banking information. At the end, confirmation screens ask you to review everything and certify it’s accurate. Read carefully. Your electronic certification carries the same legal weight as a handwritten signature.

After you submit, save or print the confirmation screen. The confirmation number proves your filing date and is how you’ll track the claim. Your dashboard will show it pending review by FloridaCommerce.

What Happens After You File

The Unpaid Waiting Week

Your first eligible week pays nothing. Florida requires an unpaid waiting period on every new claim, and you must still meet all eligibility rules during that week.2Florida Senate. Florida Code 443.091 – Eligibility for Benefits

Register for Work

You must register with Employ Florida before you can start requesting payments. If you skip it, you’ll be marked ineligible until you complete it.7FloridaJobs.org. Employ Florida Work Registration Instructions

Biweekly Requests

Every two weeks, log back into CONNECT and request your benefits. Nothing is automatic. You’ll answer whether you worked, earned money, refused a job, or were unable to work during the past two weeks. Miss a request and you miss the payment; FloridaCommerce won’t backdate it.5FloridaJobs.org. Apply for Benefits

Work Search Activities

Each week, you have to complete a minimum number of work search contacts. Five per week if you live in a county of 75,000 or more residents; three per week in smaller counties. One CareerSource appointment per week satisfies the whole requirement in either case.8FloridaCommerce. Work Search Requirements Keep records. FloridaCommerce can audit you at any time.

How Much You’ll Get

Your weekly amount comes from your highest-earning quarter in the base period. Florida divides that quarter’s wages by 26, rounds down to the nearest dollar, and caps the result between $32 and $275.9Online Sunshine. Florida Statutes 443.111 – Payment of Benefits Hitting the $275 maximum takes at least $7,150 in that top quarter, roughly $55,000 annualized.

Your total claim is capped at your base period wages divided by four, up to $3,300. At the $275 weekly maximum, that’s exactly 12 weeks. Lower weekly amounts can stretch over more weeks, but 12 is the hard ceiling for 2025 and 2026 claims.10FloridaJobs.org. Claimant FAQ

Severance, Part-Time Work, and Taxes

Severance pay delays your benefits but doesn’t reduce the total. Florida divides your total severance by your average weekly wage from that employer, rounds down, and disqualifies you for that many weeks.3Online Sunshine. Florida Statutes 443.101 – Disqualification Six thousand dollars in severance at a $1,000 weekly wage means six weeks with no payment. File right away regardless. The waiting period runs from your separation date, not your filing date, so delaying gains you nothing.

If you pick up part-time work, you’re partially unemployed as long as your weekly earnings are less than your weekly benefit amount.11Online Sunshine. Florida Statutes Chapter 443 – Reemployment Assistance Report earnings when they’re earned, not when the check clears. Failing to report is one of the fastest ways to trigger an overpayment case.

Reemployment assistance is taxable on your federal return. Florida has no state income tax, so only federal tax applies. FloridaCommerce sends a Form 1099-G at year end.12Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1099-G, Certain Government Payments You can have 10% withheld from each payment by submitting IRS Form W-4V; 10% is the only rate available for unemployment benefits, and you can start or stop it at any time.13Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4V – Voluntary Withholding Request

If Your Claim Is Denied

You have 20 calendar days from the date the determination is mailed to file an appeal. That deadline is strict, and missing it by a day generally ends your appeal rights absent extraordinary circumstances.14Florida Senate. Florida Statutes 443.151 – Procedure

The first appeal goes to an appeals referee, who holds a telephone hearing where both you and your former employer can present evidence, call witnesses, and submit documents. Bring emails, termination letters, performance reviews, text messages, photos, anything that supports your version of events. Firsthand testimony from people who were directly involved carries more weight than secondhand accounts. Most cases are decided at this stage, so prepare as if it’s your only chance.

Avoiding Overpayments and Fraud Charges

Florida treats unemployment fraud as a third-degree felony. A false statement or deliberate concealment of a material fact can bring up to five years in prison plus fines, and each false statement counts as a separate offense.15Florida House of Representatives. Florida Statutes 443.071 – Penalties

Even without criminal charges, overpayments have to be paid back. FloridaCommerce can recover the money by reducing future benefits, and the federal government can intercept your tax refund through the Treasury Offset Program.16Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Treasury Offset Program – How TOP Works Most overpayments start with something small: a few days of freelance work someone forgot to report, or a misunderstanding about when income counts. When in doubt, report it.
