To file for unemployment in Idaho, submit your claim online through the Idaho Department of Labor’s Claimant Portal at labor.idaho.gov/claimantportal after verifying your identity with ID.me.1Idaho Department of Labor. Claimant Portal FAQ You’ll enter two years of work history, wait through a one-week unpaid waiting period, and then file a weekly certification with at least five job search actions each week to keep payments coming. The maximum weekly benefit was recently set at $590, and most claimants receive between 10 and 26 weeks of payments.2Idaho Department of Labor. Administrative Order No. 674
Check That You Qualify Before You File
Idaho looks at two things: whether you earned enough during a recent “base period,” and why you’re out of work. The base period is normally the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file. If your wages don’t hit the threshold there, the state automatically checks an alternative base period made up of the last four completed quarters.3Idaho Department of Labor. Amending 72-1306 Base Periods You don’t have to run the math yourself. The department will send you a Monetary Determination after you file that lays out your wages, your weekly benefit amount, and the total you can draw during your 52-week benefit year.4Idaho Department of Labor. The reason you lost the job matters just as much. A straightforward layoff for lack of work is the cleanest path to approval. If you were fired, you can still qualify so long as the termination wasn’t for workplace misconduct. If you quit, you’ll have to show “good cause” tied to the job itself, such as an employer breaking an employment agreement or the work worsening a medical condition.5Idaho Department of Labor. Personal Eligibility Requirements Fired for misconduct or quitting without good cause disqualifies you until you find new work and earn at least 14 times your weekly benefit amount in covered wages.6Idaho State Legislature. What Happens After You File
Your first benefit week is an unpaid waiting week. The first week you file a weekly certification and meet every eligibility requirement counts as that waiting week; you can work part-time during it and still get credit as long as your earnings stay below 1.5 times your weekly benefit amount.13Idaho Department of Labor. Weekly Certification Applications
The Monetary Determination the department mails you shows the base period wages your employers reported, your weekly benefit amount, and your total benefit-year balance. Your weekly amount equals one twenty-sixth of the wages in your highest-paid base period quarter, capped at the current maximum of $590.14Idaho State Legislature. Idaho Code 72-1367 – Benefit Formula The number of weeks you can draw depends on how evenly your wages were spread across quarters: earnings spread evenly land you close to 26 weeks, income concentrated in one quarter puts you closer to 10.4Idaho Department of Labor. Monetary Eligibility Requirements
If your separation wasn’t a plain layoff, expect a phone or email fact-finding interview so the department can decide the non-monetary side. Keep filing your weekly certifications while you wait. Skipping weeks because a decision is pending is one of the most common and costly mistakes claimants make.15Idaho Department of Labor. Weekly Certification and Job Search
Every week you want a payment, you have to file a weekly certification through the Claimant Portal. A benefit week runs from Sunday at 12:01 a.m. to Saturday at 11:59 p.m. Mountain Time, and you file for that week during the following seven-day window. Skip one week and your claim stays open. Skip two in a row and your claim goes inactive, forcing you to reopen it.13Idaho Department of Labor. Weekly Certification Applications
The certification asks you to confirm that you were able to work, available for full-time work, and actively looking. You have to be willing to accept both full-time and part-time positions. Report anything that kept you from working that week, whether illness, travel, or school. Attending school in a way that interferes with your availability results in a denial for those weeks.5Idaho Department of Labor. Personal Eligibility Requirements
Idaho requires at least five work search actions every week you claim.16Idaho Department of Labor. Work Search Requirements An action can be applying for a job, attending a job fair, or contacting an employer directly. For each one, record the employer name, position, date, employer address and phone, and the name of anyone you spoke with. You enter these during your weekly certification, and the department can audit your records at any time.17Idaho Department of Labor. Unemployment Insurance Work Search Requirements
Reporting Part-Time Earnings
Working part-time doesn’t automatically shut off your benefits. Idaho lets you draw a partial payment as long as your gross earnings for the week stay under 1.5 times your weekly benefit amount. If your weekly benefit is $400, you can earn up to $599 in a week and still get something.
The math works like this: the first half of your weekly benefit amount in earnings is disregarded, and everything above that is subtracted from your benefit. So with a $400 weekly benefit and $300 in part-time wages, the first $200 is disregarded, leaving $100 in countable earnings and a $300 payment for the week. Report all gross earnings (before deductions) during the week you earned them, even if you haven’t been paid yet.13Idaho Department of Labor. Weekly Certification Applications
Hiding earnings or misstating your job search is treated as fraud, with escalating penalties, disqualification, and possible criminal charges.18Idaho Department of Labor. Unemployment Insurance Fraud Report every dollar and answer every question truthfully, even when the honest answer reduces the week’s payment.
If Your Claim Is Denied
You have 14 days from the mailing date on the determination to file an appeal. Miss it and you lose your right to a hearing on that determination.19Idaho Department of Labor. How to File an Appeal
The appeal has to be in writing, signed by you or your representative, and it must identify the specific determination you’re challenging. Send it by:
- Email: appealsmail@labor.idaho.gov
- Fax: 208-334-6440
- Mail or in person: Appeals Bureau, 317 W. Main St., Boise, Idaho 83735
Once your appeal is accepted, you’ll get a hearing before an administrative law judge.20eCFR. Part 650 Standard for Appeals Promptness – Unemployment Compensation Bring every piece of evidence that supports your side: employment contracts, emails, pay stubs, medical records, documentation of working conditions. The judge can only consider what’s entered into the record at the hearing, so don’t assume the department already has anything.
A Note on Taxes
Unemployment benefits are taxable on your federal return. In January you’ll receive a Form 1099-G showing what you were paid, which you report on Schedule 1 of your Form 1040.21Internal Revenue Service. Unemployment Compensation To avoid a surprise bill, you can ask the Idaho Department of Labor to withhold 10% of each payment for federal taxes by submitting IRS Form W-4V directly to the department, not to the IRS.22IRS.gov. Form W-4V Voluntary Withholding Request The department does not withhold Idaho state income tax, so if you owe state tax you’ll need to handle it through estimated payments or when you file your state return.23Idaho Department of Labor.
