To file for unemployment in Michigan, submit your claim online through the Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM) portal run by the Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA). File by Friday of the week after your last day of work, then certify your eligibility every two weeks to keep payments coming. For claims filed in 2026, the maximum weekly benefit is $530 and eligible workers can collect for up to 26 weeks.1State of Michigan. Unemployment Weekly Benefit Rate Increases Jan. 1, 2026
What to Gather Before You Start
Pulling your information together first prevents the small errors that stall claims. You’ll need:
- Your Social Security number and a Michigan driver’s license or state ID. Non-citizens also need their USCIS number and the expiration date on their work authorization card.2State of Michigan. Claimant Roadmap
- Every employer from the last 18 months, listed by corporate name and address (which may differ from the storefront or brand name you knew). You also need each employer’s Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN), the nine-digit number in Box B of your W-2 or on your pay stubs.3Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. - Your first and last day worked at each job, your pay rate, how often you were paid, and the reason the employer gave for ending the job or cutting your hours.2State of Michigan. Claimant Roadmap
- Your bank’s routing number and account number if you want direct deposit. Other payment options exist if you don’t have an account.2State of Michigan. Claimant Roadmap
Before you submit, verify your name, address, phone number, birth date, and driver’s license number on the application. Mistakes in these fields are among the most common filing errors the UIA sees.4Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. Common Filing and Certifying Mistakes and Helpful Tips
Filing Through MiWAM
MiWAM is open 24 hours a day and is the fastest way to file. You first need a MiLogin account, the same login used for the Secretary of State and MiBridges. If you already have a MiLogin, use it instead of creating a duplicate.2State of Michigan. Claimant Roadmap Once you’re in, the application walks you through your personal details, employment history, and the reason you’re no longer working.5State of Michigan. MiLogin and MiWAM Help Center
If you can’t file online, call MARVIN (Michigan Automated Response Voice Interactive Network) at 1-866-638-3993, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.6State of Michigan. Contact UIA Mondays and Tuesdays are the busiest days; later in the week means shorter waits.
File by Friday of the week after your last day of work. Filing late can cost you benefit weeks you would otherwise receive. Save the confirmation number as proof your claim went through. The UIA then contacts your former employers to verify why you separated, and the review generally takes a few weeks before you get a determination.
Do You Qualify
Michigan pays benefits to workers who lose a job through no fault of their own and meet a wage test. The program is funded by employer payroll taxes, so nothing comes out of your paycheck.3Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. Fact Sheet 160 – Claiming Unemployment Benefits in Michigan
The wage test uses the “standard base period,” which is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file. You need wages in at least two of those quarters, your highest quarter must total at least $5,328, and your combined base period wages must reach at least $7,992 (1.5 times the highest quarter). If the standard base period falls short, an alternate method requires total base period wages of at least $26,677.60, which is 20 times the 2026 state average weekly wage of $1,333.88.7State of Michigan. Eligibility Requirements Throughout your claim you also have to be able to work, available for full-time work, and actively searching.3Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. Quitting without good cause tied to your employer disqualifies you, and Michigan law presumes a departure was voluntary unless you prove otherwise. Being absent three or more consecutive days without contacting your employer counts as a voluntary quit. Being fired for job-related misconduct also disqualifies you, though limited exceptions apply, including military spouses who leave because of a duty reassignment and workers who leave unsuitable work within 60 days of starting it during an active benefit year.8Michigan Legislature. How Much You’ll Get and When
Your weekly benefit equals 4.1% of the wages paid to you in your highest-earning base period quarter, plus $19.33 per dependent up to five, capped at $530 per week for 2026 claims.9Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 421.27 – Payment of Benefits The maximum number of benefit weeks is 26.1State of Michigan. Unemployment Weekly Benefit Rate Increases Jan. 1, 2026
After the UIA reviews your claim, you’ll receive a Monetary Determination letter (Form UIA 1575C) by mail or in your MiWAM account showing the wages employers reported, your calculated weekly rate, and how many weeks you can collect.10State of Michigan. How to Certify for Benefits Read it closely. If the wage figures look wrong, an employer probably reported them incorrectly or the UIA matched them to the wrong account, and you’ll want to dispute it.
You choose between direct deposit and the Michigan UI Debit Card, and you can switch between them in MiWAM. Once you’ve been found eligible and have completed a certification, payment typically arrives within two to three days. The first payment takes longer because of the initial eligibility review.11Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency. Fact Sheet 119 – Electronic Payment Options for Receiving Unemployment Benefits
Certifying Every Two Weeks
Filing the initial claim doesn’t trigger payments on its own. You have to certify every two weeks through MiWAM or MARVIN, reporting whether you worked, what you earned, and what you did to look for a job.3Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. Fact Sheet 160 – Claiming Unemployment Benefits in Michigan
Your certification day is set by the last two digits of your Social Security number. Each SSN range has a specific day and time during your certification week, and Thursday and Friday are make-up days if you miss your scheduled slot.12State of Michigan. New Certification Schedule Launched to Help Michiganders Report Work Search Activity Missing the window entirely can suspend your benefits or close the claim, and it’s one of the most common mistakes the UIA sees.
Work Search Activities
You must report at least one work search activity for each week covered by the certification. Acceptable activities include applying for jobs, going to interviews, attending job fairs, using Michigan Works office resources, and taking workshops or training that build job-related skills.13Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency. Work Search Activities List
A few activities only count once per benefit year. Setting up or updating a profile on a job site like Indeed or LinkedIn counts the first time only, and the same goes for uploading your resume to Pure Michigan Talent Connect. Document each activity with specifics: the employer, the job title, how you made contact, and the date. If you certify by phone, stay on the line after MARVIN’s automated questions to give your work search details to a live UIA agent.3Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. Working Part-Time While You Collect
Picking up a part-time or temporary job doesn’t automatically end your benefits. For every dollar in gross wages you earn in a week, your benefit is reduced by 40 cents, and your combined earnings plus benefits for the week can’t exceed 1.6 times your weekly benefit rate.14State of Michigan. Wages Needed to Qualify for Unemployment Benefits
Say your weekly rate is $400 and you earn $200 that week. The 40-cent reduction cuts your benefit by $80 to $320, and your combined $520 stays under the $640 ceiling (1.6 times $400). Report gross wages accurately on every certification. Underreporting is one of the fastest ways to trigger an overpayment finding or a fraud investigation.
Taxes on Your Benefits
Unemployment benefits are taxable federal income. Michigan doesn’t withhold state income tax automatically, but you can elect federal withholding by submitting IRS Form W-4V.15Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 418, Unemployment Compensation Skip withholding and you may need to make quarterly estimated payments to avoid a bill in April. The UIA sends Form 1099-G early the following year with the total you were paid.
If Your Claim Is Denied
A denial can be challenged, but the clock is short. You have 30 days from the mail date on the determination letter to file a protest through MiWAM, by fax, or by mail. Include a written explanation of why you disagree, and the agency will issue a Redetermination.16State of Michigan. Protests and Appeals
If the Redetermination still goes against you, you have another 30 days to appeal to an Administrative Law Judge at the Michigan Office of Administrative Hearings and Rules, where both sides present evidence at a hearing. Further appeals run to the Michigan Compensation Appellate Commission and then to circuit court, each with its own 30-day deadline.16State of Michigan. Protests and Appeals
Keep certifying on time while the protest or appeal is pending. If you stop and later win, you may have gaps in your benefit weeks you can’t recover.
If You’re Overpaid
If the UIA decides it paid you benefits you weren’t entitled to, you owe the money back whether the error was yours or the agency’s. Non-fraud overpayments carry interest at 1% per month, but interest doesn’t start accruing until one year after the determination becomes final, and total interest can never exceed 50% of the overpayment. When the overpayment resulted from a UIA clerical or administrative error, the agency cannot charge any interest, and any interest already collected must be refunded.17Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 421.15
Fraud is treated differently. If the UIA finds that you intentionally misrepresented your situation, interest begins accruing immediately when the determination becomes final, and you face disqualification from future benefits and possible criminal prosecution on top of repayment. Accurate reporting on every certification is the simplest way to stay clear of that risk.
