New Jersey Form CBT-200-T is the Corporation Business Tax Tentative Return and Application for Extension of Time to File. Submit it electronically by your return’s original due date, pay at least 90 percent of your estimated full-year tax, and your corporation gets an automatic six-month extension to file the CBT-100, CBT-100S, or CBT-100U.1Division of Taxation. Corporation Business Tax (CBT) – Extensions The extension moves the filing deadline only. The tax is still due on the original date, and interest runs on anything unpaid after it.
When the Extension Is Due
For privilege periods ending on or after July 31, 2023, the New Jersey CBT return is due on the 15th day of the month following the month of the federal due date.2Legal Information Institute. N.J. Admin. Code 18:7-11.7 – Time for Filing Returns A calendar-year C corporation with an April 15 federal deadline owes its New Jersey return, and its CBT-200-T, on May 15. Fiscal-year filers apply the same rule to their own federal date.
If the deadline lands on a weekend or state holiday, it rolls to the next business day. Miss it by a day and the extension is invalid; the Division of Taxation treats the eventual return as late from the original due date, not from when you tried to extend.
Note that New Jersey does not accept the federal Form 7004 as a substitute. A federal extension with the IRS does nothing for your state obligation — you file the CBT-200-T through New Jersey’s own system.1Division of Taxation. Corporation Business Tax (CBT) – Extensions
What You Have to Pay for the Extension to Count
The CBT-200-T is short, but the number on the bottom line decides whether your extension survives. The Division requires that at least 90 percent of your actual annual liability be paid by the original due date.1Division of Taxation. Rates for Estimating Line 01
New Jersey’s Corporation Business Tax rate depends on entire net income:4State of New Jersey. Corporation Business Tax Overview

- Over $50,000 but not more than $100,000: 7.5 percent

Corporations with allocated net income over $10 million may also owe an additional 2.5 percent surcharge enacted in 2024, bringing the effective top rate to 11.5 percent. Check the current CBT-100 instructions for the threshold and applicability window, since surcharges have historically been set to expire after a defined period.

How to File and Pay Online
New Jersey mandates electronic filing for all Corporation Business Tax returns, extensions, estimated payments, and vouchers.5New Jersey Division of Taxation. Corporation Business Tax (CBT) Electronic Filing and Payment Mandate File the CBT-200-T through the Corporation Business Tax Online Filing and Payments system on the Division of Taxation’s website.1Division of Taxation. To log in, use your twelve-digit taxpayer identification number: the nine-digit Federal Employer Identification Number plus a three-digit suffix. If no suffix has been assigned, enter three zeros.6New Jersey Division of Taxation. New Jersey Corporation Business Tax – General Introduction The system pre-fills your company name, address, FEIN, reporting period, and return due date.3New Jersey Division of Taxation. CBT200-T Extension Return Enter Lines 01 through 08, then move to the payment screen.
Accepted payment methods are electronic funds transfer, e-check, and credit card.5New Jersey Division of Taxation. Corporation Business Tax (CBT) Electronic Filing and Payment Mandate An e-check requires your bank routing and account numbers. Credit card payments route through a third-party processor that charges a convenience fee, typically a percentage of the payment. After the payment clears, the system issues a confirmation number. Save it. That number is your proof of timely filing if anything is later disputed.
If electronic filing is genuinely impossible, paper checks can be mailed to the New Jersey Division of Taxation, PO Box 666, Trenton, NJ 08646-0666.7State of New Jersey Department of the Treasury. Combined Groups and S Corporations
If your corporation is part of a combined filing group, the managerial member files one CBT-200-T covering the whole group and pays the tentative tax for all taxable members. Individual members do not file separate extensions.1Division of Taxation. Corporation Business Tax (CBT) – Extensions The managerial member must be registered with the Division of Taxation as the group’s filer before the combined CBT-100U can be submitted.8State of New Jersey Department of the Treasury. Instructions for Corporation Business Tax Unitary Return Handle that registration before the extension deadline so the online system can process the filing under the correct account.
S corporations use the same CBT-200-T but will file a CBT-100S instead of a CBT-100. For privilege periods beginning on or after December 22, 2022, a federal S corporation can file as a New Jersey S corporation without a prior state election by submitting a Shareholder Jurisdictional Consent and proof of federal S corporation status.9New Jersey Department of the Treasury. CBT-100S General Instructions for New Jersey S Corporation Business Tax Return and Related Forms When estimating Line 01, apply the S corporation minimum (starting at $375) rather than the C corporation schedule. Shareholders that have elected to treat the entity as a C corporation for New Jersey purposes use the C corporation rates and minimums.
What Happens If the Extension Fails
Miss the original due date, or pay less than 90 percent of the actual liability, and the extension is denied. The Division then treats your eventual return as late from the original due date, not from the extended one.1Division of Taxation. Corporation Business Tax (CBT) – Extensions
Late filing triggers a penalty of $100 per month or partial month the return is overdue, plus 5 percent per month of the unpaid tax, capped at 25 percent.10Justia. New Jersey Code 54:49-4 – Late Filing Penalty If no return is filed within 30 days after the Division sends its first delinquency notice, the 5 percent monthly penalty applies to total tax liability rather than just the unpaid balance.
Interest compounds on top of penalties. New Jersey charges interest at three percentage points above the prime rate, compounded annually.11Legal Information Institute. N.J. Admin. Code 18:2-2.4 – Failure to Pay on Time; Extensions of Time to Pay For the 2026 calendar year that rate is 10.00 percent, a 7.00 percent prime rate plus the 3 percent statutory add-on.12New Jersey Division of Taxation. Interest Rate Assessed on Tax Balances Interest accrues from the original due date on any amount that remains unpaid.
Even a valid extension does not stop interest from running between the original due date and the day you actually pay. The extension waives the late-filing penalty. It does not waive interest. This is the most common misunderstanding about the CBT-200-T: it buys time to prepare paperwork, not time to come up with money.
After You File
The Division of Taxation does not send a confirmation letter or formal approval. The extension takes effect automatically once a valid CBT-200-T is submitted with a tentative payment of at least 90 percent of the eventual liability.1Division of Taxation. Corporation Business Tax (CBT) – Extensions Your online confirmation number is the only record you will have, so store it where you can find it.
Check your bank account to confirm the payment actually cleared. A rejected e-check or declined credit card means the tentative payment never went through, which voids the extension even though the form was submitted. If something failed, resubmit before the deadline passes.
The full CBT-100, CBT-100S, or CBT-100U is then due six months after the original filing date. For a calendar-year filer with an original May 15 due date, the extended deadline is November 15. On that final return, report the tentative payment from the CBT-200-T as a credit against total tax, and either pay any remaining balance or claim a refund for an overpayment.
