How to File Your Florida Unemployment Form Through Reconnect

To file for Florida unemployment, create an account on the Reconnect portal at FloridaCommerce and submit an online claim with your Social Security number, driver’s license, and employer details covering the last 18 months. Every two weeks after that, you log back in to request payment and confirm you’ve searched for work. Benefits run up to $275 a week for a maximum of 12 weeks.

What to Have Ready Before You Start

Missing information is the most common reason a claim stalls. Gather everything below before opening Reconnect.1FloridaCommerce. Apply for Benefits

  • Your Social Security number. State law makes a valid SSN an eligibility condition.2Florida Legislature. Florida Code 443.091 – Benefit Eligibility Conditions
  • Your Florida driver’s license or state ID number.
  • Employment history for the past 18 months. For each employer: business name as shown on your pay stub, full mailing address, phone number, first and last dates worked, gross earnings, and the reason you stopped working.
  • The Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) from your W-2 or 1099. If you can’t find it, employer details from a recent pay stub work as a substitute.3FloridaCommerce. What Information and Documents Do I Need to Have Ready Before Applying

A few situations call for extra paperwork. Military separations require a DD-214 Member 2 or Member 4. Federal employees need an SF-8 and SF-50 along with a W-2 or Leave and Earnings Statement. Union members need their hall number and phone. Non-U.S. citizens need an alien registration number or another work authorization form.3FloridaCommerce. Who Qualifies

You need to have lost your job through no fault of your own. Layoffs, hour reductions, and business closures qualify. Quitting without a good cause connected to your employer, or being fired for misconduct, will disqualify you until you find new work and earn at least 17 times your weekly benefit amount.4Florida Legislature. Florida Code 443.101 – Disqualification

Your past earnings also have to hit two marks. Total wages during the base period, which is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file, must be at least 1.5 times your wages in your highest-earning quarter, and they must total at least $3,400. Fall short on either and the claim gets denied on monetary grounds.2Florida Legislature. Florida Code 443.091 – Benefit Eligibility Conditions

Every week you claim benefits, you must also be able to work, available for work, and actively searching. Non-U.S. citizens need valid work authorization during the base period, at the time of filing, and throughout the weeks they receive payments.

Filing Your Claim on Reconnect

Florida takes applications through the Reconnect portal on the FloridaCommerce website. If you’ve never filed for Reemployment Assistance in Florida, or if you haven’t logged in since September 1, 2021, you’ll set up a new account. Signup includes multi-factor authentication to verify your identity.1FloridaCommerce. Apply for Benefits

Once you’re in, the system moves through screens that ask about each employer from the past 18 months. For every job you’ll pick a reason for separation from a set list: layoff, discharge, voluntary quit, or another category. That answer drives the legal decision on whether you qualify, so choose the option that honestly describes what happened. You’ll also enter gross earnings, which the agency uses to figure your weekly benefit.

List every employer, including short-term and part-time jobs. FloridaCommerce cross-checks your entries against the wage records employers file with the state. Leaving one off doesn’t help. It just delays your claim while the agency reconciles the gap.

Review the summary screen before submitting. When you’re done, you’ll get a confirmation with a claim ID number. Save it or print it.

A paper application is available for people who can’t file online. FloridaCommerce lists a downloadable form under the Reemployment Assistance section, though the agency encourages filing through Reconnect for faster processing.

What Happens After You Submit

FloridaCommerce starts by issuing a Monetary Determination. This notice tells you whether your base-period wages qualify you, your weekly benefit amount, and your maximum total benefit. The numbers come from wage reports your employers already sent to the state.5FloridaCommerce. Glossary

At the same time, the agency reaches out to your former employers to verify your reason for leaving. If an employer disputes what you said, FloridaCommerce opens a fact-finding investigation and posts a questionnaire to your Reconnect dashboard. Respond quickly. Ignoring the notice usually means the employer’s account stands.

Once a claim is established and payable, FloridaCommerce sets up a Way2Go prepaid debit card in your name, issued by Comerica Bank. The card typically arrives by mail in 7 to 10 business days.6FloridaCommerce. Way2Go Debit Card Fee Schedule You can also transfer money from the card to your personal bank account at no charge.

Requesting Payment Every Two Weeks

Filing the initial claim doesn’t put money in your account. Every two weeks, you log into Reconnect and request payment for the weeks you’re claiming. On that screen you report any earnings, job offers, or changes to your availability. Miss a biweekly request and you don’t get paid for those weeks.7FloridaCommerce. Request Benefit Payment

You also have to complete a workforce registration through the Employ Florida website. This is a separate step from filing the claim, and skipping it makes you ineligible. Some claimants are exempt, including non-Florida residents, workers on temporary layoff, union members who get jobs through a hiring hall, and people in an approved short-time compensation plan.2Florida Legislature. FloridaCommerce offers an optional skills assessment. It is not required, there is no minimum score, and you can complete the entire claims process without it.8FloridaCommerce. Skills Assessment Information FAQ

Weekly Work Search Rules

You have to actively look for work every week you claim benefits. In counties with more than 75,000 residents, that means contacting at least five prospective employers each week. In smaller counties (75,000 residents or fewer), the minimum drops to three.7FloridaCommerce. Request Benefit Payment

Keep a written log of every contact: employer name, date, method of contact, and result. FloridaCommerce runs random audits and can demand proof at any time. One rule catches a lot of claimants off guard. You cannot list the same employer at the same location for three weeks in a row unless that employer has indicated since your first contact that they’re actively hiring.2Florida Legislature. Florida Code 443.091 – Benefit Eligibility Conditions

Instead of hitting the employer-contact minimum for a week, you can visit a CareerSource one-stop career center in person that same week and meet with a representative to use their reemployment services.

How Much You’ll Receive

Your weekly benefit equals one twenty-sixth of the wages you earned in your highest-paid base-period quarter. The floor is $32 a week and the ceiling is $275, no matter how much you earned.9Florida Legislature. Florida Code 443.111 – Payment of Benefits

Florida pays for up to 12 weeks, one of the shortest durations in the country. At the $275 cap, the most you can collect in a benefit year is $3,300. The maximum weekly amount that applies when you first set up your claim stays fixed for the rest of your benefit year, even if the statutory cap changes.

If Your Claim Is Denied

You have 20 calendar days from the date on the determination notice to file an appeal. If the twentieth day lands on a weekend or legal holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. You file the appeal through your Reconnect account.10FloridaCommerce. File an Appeal

The appeal goes to a referee who holds a hearing where you and your former employer can present testimony and documents. All evidence has to be submitted before the hearing closes. You cannot add materials afterward.11Florida Senate. Florida Code 443.151 – Procedure

Taxes on the Money You Receive

Reemployment Assistance payments are taxable federal income. Florida has no state income tax on individuals, so the federal bill is the practical concern. In January after any year you collected benefits, FloridaCommerce sends you a Form 1099-G showing the gross amount paid the previous year.

When you file your initial claim, you can choose to have federal income tax withheld from each payment at a flat 10 percent rate. If you skip withholding, set the money aside yourself. An unexpected tax bill the following April is one of the more common surprises for people who collected benefits during a job gap.
