To file Michigan MI-1040, take your Federal Adjusted Gross Income from line 11 of your federal Form 1040, adjust it up or down using Schedule 1, apply Michigan’s flat 4.25% income tax rate, subtract your personal exemptions and any credits you qualify for, report your Michigan withholding on Schedule W, and submit the return by April 15 either electronically or by mail to the Michigan Department of Treasury in Lansing.1Michigan Department of Treasury. 4.25% Income Tax Rate for Individuals and Fiduciaries in 2026 Tax Year Full-year residents, part-year residents, and non-residents who earned Michigan income all use the same MI-1040.
What to Gather Before You Start
Pulling these together first saves rework later:
- Social Security numbers for you, your spouse (if filing jointly), and every dependent you plan to claim.
- Your completed federal Form 1040. Michigan starts from your Federal AGI on line 11, so any federal error travels directly onto your state return.2Internal Revenue Service. Adjusted Gross Income
- Every W-2, 1099, and W-2G that shows Michigan tax withheld. You will list each one on Schedule W.
- Property tax bills or rent receipts for the year, if you plan to claim the Homestead Property Tax Credit.
- The exact dates you moved in or out of Michigan, if you were a part-year resident. Part-year residents prorate income based on those dates.
You can download the MI-1040 and its schedules from the Michigan Department of Treasury’s forms page, or complete them through any commercial tax software that supports Michigan returns.3Michigan Department of Treasury. Michigan Individual Income Tax Forms
Filling Out the MI-1040 Step by Step
Enter your filing status, personal information, and residency at the top of the form. Then work down the calculation:
- Enter your Federal AGI from line 11 of your federal 1040.
- Add any Schedule 1 additions on line 11 of the MI-1040.
- Subtract any Schedule 1 subtractions on line 13. The result is your Michigan taxable income.4Michigan Department of Treasury. 2025 Michigan Individual Income Tax Return MI-1040
- Multiply Michigan taxable income by 4.25% to calculate your base tax.1Michigan Department of Treasury. 4.25% Income Tax Rate for Individuals and Fiduciaries in 2026 Tax Year
- Subtract your personal exemption allowance. For 2026, each exemption is worth $5,900. You claim one for yourself, one for a spouse on a joint return, and one for each qualifying dependent. Additional special exemptions are available on the MI-1040 itself for filers who are deaf, blind, hemiplegic, paraplegic, quadriplegic, or totally disabled.5Michigan Department of Treasury. 2026 Michigan Income Tax Withholding Guide
- Apply any credits you qualify for.
- Compare your total tax to the Michigan withholding from Schedule W and any estimated payments you made. If you paid more than you owe, the difference is your refund; if you paid less, you owe the balance with the return.
Schedule 1: Additions and Subtractions
Schedule 1 reconciles federal AGI to Michigan taxable income. Additions capture income Michigan taxes but the federal return did not. Subtractions capture income Michigan does not tax, including interest on U.S. government obligations, active-duty military pay and Michigan National Guard pay, qualifying retirement and pension benefits (calculated on Form 4884, with the largest deductions generally going to filers born before 1946), contributions to Michigan Education Savings Program and MiABLE accounts, and income already taxed by another state. Totals flow to lines 11 and 13 of the MI-1040.4Michigan Department of Treasury. 2025 Michigan Individual Income Tax Return MI-1040
Schedule W: Reporting Withholding
Every W-2, 1099, or W-2G showing Michigan tax withheld gets its own line on Schedule W. For each W-2, enter the employer’s federal Employer Identification Number and the Michigan tax withheld from Box 17.6Michigan Department of Treasury. 2025 Michigan Withholding Tax Schedule The total transfers to line 31 of the MI-1040.
Two things trip filers up here. First, your numbers must match what your employers reported to Treasury; mismatches slow or shrink refunds. Second, do not attach copies of your W-2s to the return. Treasury verifies withholding against employer records, not documents you send in.
Credits That Change Your Bottom Line
Three credits do the heaviest lifting for individual filers. All three are refundable, meaning they can generate a check even if you owe no Michigan income tax.
Homestead Property Tax Credit
Claimed on Form MI-1040CR, this credit offsets the property taxes (or the portion of rent treated as property taxes) you paid on your Michigan homestead, measured against your total household resources. Household resources include money that isn’t taxable income — Social Security, public assistance, gifts — so the calculation isn’t just AGI. To qualify, total household resources generally cannot exceed $71,500, and the taxable value of your homestead cannot exceed $165,400.7Michigan Department of Treasury. 2025 Michigan Homestead Property Tax Credit Claim MI-1040CR Renters are eligible; Michigan treats a set percentage of annual rent as property tax.
Earned Income Tax Credit
Michigan’s EITC is 30% of your federal EITC.8State of Michigan. Michigan Earned Income Tax Credit for Working Families If you claim the federal credit, the Michigan credit follows automatically when you file the MI-1040. No separate application.
Home Heating Credit
Filed on Form MI-1040CR-7, this credit helps lower-income homeowners and renters cover heating costs. It has its own deadline — September 30 — and can be filed on its own without an MI-1040 attached. Full-time students claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return are not eligible.9State of Michigan. Home Heating Credit Information
Submitting Your Return
You can file electronically through commercial tax software or Michigan’s e-Services portal, or mail a paper return. E-filed returns give you an immediate confirmation and refunds typically arrive within four to six weeks of acceptance. Paper returns take six to eight weeks to process.10State of Michigan. If You Need More Time
A federal extension automatically extends your Michigan filing deadline to the new federal due date. You don’t need to file a separate Michigan form.11Michigan Department of Treasury. Form 4 – Instructions for Application for Extension of Time to File Michigan Tax Returns If you don’t have a federal extension but need extra Michigan time, file Michigan Form 4 by April 15.
An extension buys filing time, not payment time. If you expect to owe, send an estimated payment by April 15. Interest runs on unpaid balances from the original due date regardless of any extension.
Fixing a Return You Already Filed
If you find an error after filing — a missing W-2, a subtraction you overlooked, a credit you forgot — file an amended MI-1040. Check the “Amended Return” box at the top of a fresh MI-1040 and attach a written explanation of what changed.
You have four years from the original due date to amend. A 2025 return due April 15, 2026 can be amended through April 15, 2030. Pay any additional tax with the amended return to stop interest from accruing; the same four-year window is your deadline to claim a refund the amendment produces.
Penalties for Filing Late or Filing False
Filing late, or not filing, triggers a penalty of 5% of the unpaid tax for each month or partial month the return is overdue, capped at 25% of the tax owed. Interest runs from the original due date until you pay.12Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 205.24 – Failure or Refusal to File Return or Pay Tax
Filing a false return with intent to evade tax is a felony under Michigan law, punishable by a fine of up to $5,000, up to five years in prison, or both. Knowingly signing a false return can also produce a separate perjury charge.13Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 205.27 – Prohibited Conduct, Violation, Penalties, Enforcement
