A Georgia change of address means updating several agencies separately, starting with the Department of Driver Services within 60 days of your move. Your voter registration, state tax record, vehicle tag, mail forwarding, Social Security profile, and IRS record each live in their own system, and none of them updates automatically when another does.
Driver’s License
Under O.C.G.A. § 40-5-33, anyone who moves from the address on a Georgia driver’s license has 60 days to apply for an updated license showing the new address.1Justia. Georgia Code 40-5-33 – Change of Address or Name Missing the deadline doesn’t invalidate the license itself, but driving with outdated information can create problems during traffic stops or insurance claims.
You have three ways to submit the change:
- Log in to the DDS Online Services Portal, complete the address change application, and pay any fee. Your new license arrives by mail in two to three weeks.2Georgia.gov. Change Address on an Existing Georgia Driver’s License
- Use the DDS 2 GO mobile app. Sign in, tap Services, then Address Change. Same mailing timeline.2Georgia.gov. Change Address on an Existing Georgia Driver’s License
- Visit any DDS Customer Service Center with your current license. The technician collects your old card on the spot and issues a temporary paper credential while your replacement is printed and mailed.3Georgia Department of Driver Services. Update License
Georgia administrative rules require you to surrender your old license at the service center, so you won’t leave with both cards.4Georgia Secretary of State. Subject 375-3-1 General Provisions
Fees
Your first address change during a license term is free. A second change before your next renewal costs $10. If you’re within 150 days of your license expiration, DDS may process the change as a full renewal, which carries the standard renewal fee instead.5Georgia Department of Driver Services. Tell Your Auto Insurer
Car insurance premiums are partly based on the garaging address where the vehicle is kept. Even an in-state move can shift your rate depending on local claims history, theft rates, and commute distance. Contact your insurer as soon as you know your new address; failing to update this information can give the company grounds to dispute a later claim.
Voter Registration
Moving within Georgia doesn’t require a fresh registration, but you do need to update your address so the registrar places you in the right precinct and districts. Show up at your old polling place on election day and you may be redirected or asked to vote a provisional ballot.
The fastest route is the Secretary of State’s My Voter Page. Log in, update your address, and the change routes to your county board of registrars.6Georgia Secretary of State. Voter Resources On paper, print the Georgia Application for Voter Registration, complete Section 8 (Name/Address Change) with your previous address, and either mail it postage-free or drop it at your county voter registration office.7Georgia Secretary of State. Once the county receives your update, you’re reassigned to the correct precinct. If your new address falls in a different precinct, you’ll get a first-class notice with your new polling location and confirmed districts.8FindLaw. Georgia Code Title 21 Elections 21-2-218
Deadlines
Georgia’s registration deadline is the close of business on the fifth Monday before a general primary, general election, or presidential preference primary.9Justia. Georgia Code 21-2-224 – Registration Deadlines For the 2026 cycle, the primary deadline is April 20 and the general election deadline is October 5.10Georgia.gov. Georgia General Election 2026 An address update counts as a registration change, so those dates are your cutoffs. Submit early. Last-day filings can get caught in processing backlogs.
If you’re a service member stationed away from home or a U.S. citizen living abroad, the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act covers you. Submit a new Federal Post Card Application whenever you move and again each January; it registers you, requests an absentee ballot, and updates your contact information in one step.11Federal Voting Assistance Program. Georgia Department of Revenue
Updating your state tax address keeps refund checks and assessment notices from landing at your old home. The Department of Revenue accepts changes three ways:12Georgia Department of Revenue. Change Address on Tax Forms
- Georgia Tax Center: log in, click the More tab, select Manage Names & Addresses, open the Addresses tab, add or edit, click Next, then Submit. A confirmation page appears when the change goes through.
- Electronic filing: tax software automatically updates your address to whatever appears on the return you file.
- Paper return: check the address-change box on your next paper filing.
There is no standalone change-of-address form for Georgia state taxes. If you see a reference to “IT-CA” on the Department of Revenue website, that’s the Job Tax Credit form, not an address document.13Georgia Department of Revenue. IT-CA Use the Georgia Tax Center outside of filing season.
Vehicle Registration
Your vehicle tag is a separate record from your driver’s license. To update the address on your registration, visit your local county tag office.14Georgia Department of Revenue. Change Address on Registration A move to a different county means transferring your tag to the new county’s office. Fees for transfers vary, so call the county office first to confirm the amount and what documents to bring.
USPS Mail Forwarding
None of the state agency updates forward your mail. To redirect letters and packages from your old address, file a change of address with the United States Postal Service. The online option costs $1.10 for identity verification, charged to a credit or debit card whose billing address matches either your old or new address.15USPS. Standard Forward Mail and Change of Address Filing in person at your local post office is free. Standard forwarding runs 12 months for first-class mail and 60 days for magazines and periodicals.
IRS and Social Security
Georgia’s Department of Revenue and the IRS keep separate records; updating one does not update the other. To change your home address with the IRS, file Form 8822. Processing takes four to six weeks.16Internal Revenue Service. Change of Address Business owners use Form 8822-B for a business mailing address, business location, or responsible-party change; entities with an EIN must file it within 60 days of a responsible-party change.17Internal Revenue Service. Change of Address or Responsible Party — Business
For Social Security, sign in to my Social Security, open the My Profile tab, select Contact, and enter the new address. You can set the change to take effect immediately or on a future date. One exception: recipients of Supplemental Security Income cannot use the online portal for an address change and must call or visit a local Social Security office.
The Order That Works
The single most common mistake is updating the driver’s license and assuming everything else follows. DDS, voter registration, the Department of Revenue, the IRS, USPS, your county tag office, and Social Security each operate independently. Set aside about 30 minutes the week you move, open each portal in a separate browser tab, and work through them in sequence. Start with the driver’s license, because the 60-day statutory clock begins the day you move and several other agencies will want to see the updated license as proof of your new address.
