When You Can Renew and Who Qualifies
The 90-day window before expiration is the earliest you can start.2Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles. License Renewal If your current license already has a gold star in the upper-right corner, it’s a REAL ID and you can renew through any of the three methods. If you don’t have a REAL ID yet and want one, you have to appear in person at a DMV branch with the federal documentation described below.
One hard limit: if your license has been expired for five years or more, renewal isn’t an option. You’ll retake the learner’s permit written test and then a road test, both offered only at the Cranston headquarters.2Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles. Drivers over 72 get a shorter cycle. Your license is prorated to expire on your 75th birthday, and every two years after that.2Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles. License Renewal
Documents to Bring
What you gather depends on whether you’re keeping a standard license or moving to REAL ID.
Standard License
Bring one identity document and two documents proving Rhode Island residency. Acceptable residency documents include a utility bill, bank statement, or personal check dated within the past 60 days and showing your current address. REAL ID
REAL ID requires originals, not photocopies. Your identity document must be one of the following:
- A valid, unexpired U.S. passport. Passports obtained or renewed within the last six months may not yet verify in the national database, so bring a backup.
- A certified copy of your birth certificate filed with a state Office of Vital Statistics.
- A valid, unexpired Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551).
- A Certificate of Naturalization (Form N-550 or N-570) from the Department of Homeland Security.
- An unexpired Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766).
You’ll list your Social Security number on the LI-1. If you don’t have one, provide a letter from the Social Security Administration confirming ineligibility.5Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles. Since May 7, 2025, the federal REAL ID requirement has been in effect. A standard Rhode Island license without the gold star is not accepted at TSA airport checkpoints for domestic flights, though a valid U.S. passport or military ID still works.7Transportation Security Administration. Filling Out Form LI-1
Download the LI-1 from the Rhode Island DMV website or pick one up at any branch.8Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles. License Forms Fill it out before your appointment; a AAA visit requires the same form.9Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles. Locations and Hours
The top of the form covers your legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, current residential address, and physical descriptors (height, weight, hair, eyes). Under transaction type, check “Renewal.” Then sign and date at the bottom; if you’re in person, the clerk witnesses the signature.
Two questions catch people out. The organ and tissue donor question resets every renewal: you must actively select “YES” to stay on the registry. Selecting “NO” or leaving it blank removes you. The second asks whether you want the DMV to update or create your voter registration. Three Ways to Submit
Online
If you already hold a REAL ID or are renewing a standard license without upgrading, online is the fastest route. You’ll pay by credit card and skip the branch entirely.2Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles. License Renewal The trade-off: no photo temporary license. You get a digital receipt that, paired with your existing card, is accepted by state and local law enforcement while your new card is in the mail.
At a DMV Branch
Branches operate by reservation only. Book through the DMV website before you go.11Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles. RI DMV Homepage Four branches currently handle renewals, all open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.:

AAA (Members Only)
AAA Northeast members can renew at participating Rhode Island AAA offices. Bring the completed LI-1 and the same documents you’d bring to the DMV.9Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles. Locations and Hours CDL renewals are excluded from AAA services.
Fees and Payment
Every fee below already includes a $3.50 technology surcharge:
- Operator’s license renewal, five years: $73.50
- Age 75 and above, two-year renewal: $27.50
DMV branches accept cash, personal checks, bank checks, and money orders. Make checks payable to “Division of Motor Vehicles.” Third-party and starter checks are refused. Credit cards work too (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express), but the processor adds a service fee: $1.55 for transactions under $65, or 2.40% for transactions of $65 and above. After You Submit
If you renewed in person, you leave with a temporary paper license that’s valid for driving until the permanent plastic card shows up. The permanent card is mailed to the address on your application and can take up to 60 days to arrive.13RI.gov. If you renewed online, hold on to the confirmation receipt and carry it with your current license. Together they function as valid identification for state and local law enforcement purposes until the new card arrives.2Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles. A Note for CDL Holders
CDL renewals use the same LI-1 but add federal requirements. You self-certify your operating category (interstate or intrastate, excepted or non-excepted), and non-excepted interstate drivers must keep a current medical examiner’s certificate on file with the DMV.14Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
