The Auburn University transient form is your pre-approval to take a course at another accredited school and transfer the credit back to your Auburn degree. You generate it inside AU Access, print it, and deliver it to the host school before you enroll there. Getting that approval in hand first is what obligates Auburn to accept the credit later.1Auburn University. Transient Credit
Who Can Use the Form
You need to be in good academic standing at Auburn to take courses elsewhere on a transient basis.1Auburn University. Transient Credit Approval covers one term at a time, so a summer class at a school near home and a second transient term in the fall are two separate processes. If you are on probation or suspension, talk to your advisor before starting; restrictions are common.
Check the Transfer Equivalency Chart First
Before you open the form, look up the course you want on Auburn’s Transfer Equivalency Chart. You can search by state and institution or by course name, and the tool shows exactly how a class at the host school translates into Auburn credit.2Auburn University. Transfer Equivalency Chart Write down the host school’s course prefix and number along with the Auburn equivalent. You will need both.
If the course is not on the chart, it has not yet been evaluated for Auburn credit. The online form will not list it, and you will need to go through your advisor instead.
How to Generate the Form in AU Access
The form lives in AU Access at auaccess.auburn.edu. Log in with your Auburn credentials, then:1Auburn University. Transient Credit
- Open Student Self-Service and choose “Transient Enrollment for Auburn Students at Other Institutions.”
- Read the transient enrollment guidelines the system displays. They tell you when the advisor route is required instead.
- Select the term, state, and host institution, then click Search. The system pulls options from the Transfer Equivalency Chart.
- When the correct courses appear, click “Proceed to Transient Form.” The system produces a printable form and emails a copy to you and your academic advisor.
Every course you plan to take at the host institution in that term needs to be on the form. If you are taking two classes at the same school, list both before you generate it. Adding a course afterward means starting a new form or going through your advisor.
When the Course Is Not Listed
If the online form does not include the course you need, your college or school within Auburn can issue a paper transient student form. Your dean or advisor reviews the course, decides whether it fits your degree plan, and marks which courses are approved for you to take elsewhere.3Auburn University. Transient Approval
For courses that already show on your transcript as “EVAL HOL1” (Syllabus Needed for Evaluation), you submit the course syllabus to your advisor, who facilitates the evaluation and updates your record once a decision is made.4Auburn University. SOS Transfer Credit Evaluation Process Pulling the syllabus from the host school’s department site before the term starts speeds this along.
Deliver the Form to the Host School, Not to Auburn
This is the step people miss. The completed form goes to the institution you plan to attend, not back to Auburn’s registrar. Mail it or hand-deliver it to the host school’s registrar or admissions office before you enroll in classes there.1Auburn University. Transient Credit Many host schools require the form as proof that your home institution has authorized the enrollment, so contact them first to confirm where it should be sent and whether they need anything else.
After You Finish the Course
Getting the credit onto your Auburn transcript is on you. The host school will not send anything to Auburn automatically.1Auburn University. Transient Credit
Request an official transcript from the host school. If their transcript service lists “Auburn University – Registrar (Undergraduate Continuing Students),” pick that option; sending it to admissions can misroute it, since you are already enrolled. Otherwise, send it electronically to transfer@auburn.edu or mail a paper copy to the Office of the Registrar, Langdon Hall, 152 S. College Street, Auburn, AL 36849. Until Auburn receives the transcript, the course does not appear on your record and the hours do not count toward your degree.
How the Credit Lands on Your Auburn Record
Hours transfer; grades do not. Your Auburn GPA is calculated only from coursework completed at Auburn.5Auburn University. Transfer Credit Policies and Process
A “D” in a transient course may be accepted, but only if a “D” in the equivalent Auburn course would also count toward your degree. English Composition, for example, requires at least a “C” at Auburn, so a “D” earned in the equivalent course elsewhere would not apply.6Auburn University Bulletin. Undergraduate Transfer Credit Policy Aim for a “C” or better.
Transfer Limits That Can Trip You Up
Auburn caps how much outside credit can apply to a degree, which matters if you plan transient coursework across multiple terms:6Auburn University Bulletin. Undergraduate Transfer Credit Policy
- At least 25 percent of your total degree hours must be Auburn courses.
- At least 50 percent of your major hours must be completed at Auburn.
- At least nine of your minor hours must be Auburn courses.
- No more than half your Auburn curriculum, and never more than 64 hours, can transfer from a two-year college.
You also must be enrolled at Auburn during the term you complete your final degree requirements.7Auburn University Bulletin. Bachelor’s Degree Requirements A transient semester late in your program needs careful coordination with your advisor so a required course does not end up on the wrong side of that rule.
If You Use VA Education Benefits
GI Bill and other VA benefits add paperwork to a transient term. The Veterans Resource Center at Auburn certifies your enrollment with the VA each semester, and only courses required for your declared program of study will be certified for benefits.8Auburn University. AU VRC Statement of Understanding Any enrollment change, including adding or dropping a transient course, can affect your monthly housing allowance, so report changes to the VRC right away.
Submit an enrollment certification request to the VRC before the term starts. If you decide not to attend the host school after all, email veterans@auburn.edu before the term begins to cancel the certification. Skipping that step can create VA overpayments that are slow to untangle.
