Pick the Right Document Before You Order
Three different CHSPE documents exist, and they are not interchangeable. Ordering the wrong one means paying twice and starting over, so check with whoever is asking for the record before you click through checkout.
- The Certificate of Proficiency is the original paper credential issued by the State Board of Education after you passed. It is the diploma-equivalent itself. If you lost yours, contact PSI about a replacement.
- A certification letter simply confirms that you passed. This is what the CDE page points former examinees to on the HiSET CHSPE Online Store, and it is usually what employers and military recruiters want for verification.
- An official transcript shows your actual scores on each section. Colleges and vocational programs typically want this instead of, or in addition to, a certification letter. Parchment’s CHSPE page is the route for this.2Parchment. CHSPE Transcripts
What to Have Ready Before You Start
Gather these details first so you can complete the order without guessing and without the records office failing to find your file:
- Your legal name as it appeared when you tested. If your name has changed, note both versions.
- Your date of birth.
- The approximate month and year you took the exam. This matters most if your name is common.
- Your Social Security number. Some portals request it as an added identifier. If you would rather not enter it online, call PSI first to ask whether it can be left off.
- The full delivery address or email for the receiving party. Verify spelling and ZIP codes. A wrong address means reordering and paying again.
Accuracy matters more than speed here. A misspelled name or wrong test year can delay processing or return no results at all.
Fees, Delivery, and Timing
The CDE does not publish a set fee schedule for CHSPE certification letters or transcripts; the exact amount shows up at checkout on the HiSET store or on Parchment. Confirm the price before you pay.
Electronic delivery is faster, typically a few business days after processing. Mailed documents add postal transit on top of that. If a college application deadline is pushing you, order well in advance and choose electronic delivery whenever the receiving institution accepts it.

Under FERPA, an employer or background-check company cannot pull your transcript on their own. You either order it yourself and have it sent to them, or you give signed written authorization the records office can verify.4Student Privacy Policy Office. If You Took the Newer CPP/HiSET Instead
The CHSPE ran from 1974 through 2023 and was replaced by the California Proficiency Program, which uses the HiSET exam.1California Department of Education.
