How to Fill Out and Submit the Georgia Senior Emissions Exemption Application

If you are 65 or older and own an older, low-mileage vehicle registered in metro Atlanta, you can skip the yearly emissions test by submitting a Georgia senior emissions exemption application to Georgia’s Clean Air Force (GCAF). There is no fee. You can file online or in person at a GCAF Customer Service Center, and mailed applications are not accepted.1Georgia’s Clean Air Force. Senior Exemptions

The exemption only matters if your vehicle is registered in one of the thirteen counties that require emissions testing: Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding, and Rockdale.2Georgia Environmental Protection Division. Who Qualifies

  • You are 65 or older, according to the date of birth on your ID.
  • Your vehicle is at least 10 model years old. For 2026, that means model year 2016 or earlier.
  • You have driven the vehicle fewer than 5,000 miles in the past twelve months, and the odometer works so GCAF can verify the reading.1Georgia’s Clean Air Force. Senior Exemptions

Your name must be the first name listed on the Georgia title or registration. If the car is titled to more than one person, only that primary owner can apply — a spouse’s or child’s ID will not satisfy the age requirement even if they are on the title.4Georgia’s Clean Air Force. Senior Exemption Application Drive more than 5,000 miles a year and you are not eligible, regardless of your age or the vehicle’s age.

What to Gather Before You Apply

Proof of Age

  • Georgia driver’s license
  • State-issued ID card
  • Passport
  • Resident card

Proof of Ownership

  • Copy of the Georgia registration
  • Copy of the current or prior year’s renewal notice
  • Copy of last year’s Georgia tag receipt
  • Copy of the Georgia title

Vehicle Details for the Form

Have the year, make, model, VIN, tag number, and the current odometer mileage on hand. Enter mileage as a whole number with no commas or decimals, and read it straight off the odometer just before you submit.5Georgia’s Clean Air Force. Filing the Application

Online

The electronic form on the GCAF website is the fastest option. It has three sections.4Georgia’s Clean Air Force. Senior Exemption Application Under Registered Owner Information, enter your full legal name exactly as it appears on the title or registration, your date of birth, and a phone number. Adding an email gives GCAF a second way to reach you. Under Vehicle Identification Information, enter the year, make, model, VIN, tag number, and current mileage, and check the VIN twice against your paperwork. Proxy Information is only for someone submitting on your behalf, and that person attaches a copy of their own ID.

Upload your proof-of-age and proof-of-ownership documents, type your first name, last name, and the date as your electronic signature, and submit. Save the confirmation (waiver) number that appears on screen.

In Person

After You Submit

Allow up to three business days for processing.7Georgia’s Clean Air Force. Non-Conforming Status Application – Section: Next Steps A GCAF representative calls the primary owner with the decision, leaves a voicemail if no one picks up, and follows up by email when one is on file. After two attempts they stop trying, so if you have heard nothing on day four, call 1-800-449-2471 with your confirmation number.1Georgia’s Clean Air Force. Senior Exemptions

If something is missing or cannot be verified, your application sits in pending status and you can upload additional documents through the GCAF waiver assistance portal. The three-day clock restarts when the correction arrives. Ignore the notice for 30 days and GCAF closes the file; you would need to start over. Most delays trace back to a blurry ID scan, a title where the applicant is not listed first, or a mileage entry that does not match the other paperwork, so it pays to look closely at your uploads before you hit submit.

Finishing Your Registration Renewal

An approved exemption clears the emissions requirement, but it does not renew your registration. You still have to visit your county tag office, pay the annual ad valorem tax, and pick up your decal.8Georgia Department of Revenue. Get the exemption approved before your registration deadline. If you wait until the last week, even a three-day GCAF turnaround could push you past due.

A Note on Mileage Accuracy

Report the odometer reading truthfully. Under O.C.G.A. § 16-10-20, knowingly giving false or fraudulent information to a state agency is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000, imprisonment of one to five years, or both.9Justia Law.
