New York City School Support Services (Public) Career Opportunities NYCSSS is the non-profit that staffs custodial work in New York City Department of Education buildings across the five boroughs, and the online form is only the first step. A background check, fingerprinting, and a roughly $135 out-of-pocket fee come next.

Who Can Apply

There is no formal education requirement for an NYCSSS cleaner job. You do not need a high school diploma or equivalency certificate. Six months to a year of janitorial or facility cleaning experience is preferred, along with familiarity with cleaning chemicals and power equipment, but neither is required to submit.

You must be at least 18 and legally authorized to work in the United States. I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification Have a government-issued photo ID and either a Social Security card, birth certificate, or other acceptable I-9 document on hand before your start date.

What to Gather Before You Open the Portal

Fill out the whole application in one sitting if you can. Pull these together first:

  • Your full legal name, Social Security number, date of birth, and current mailing address.
  • A phone number and an email address you actually check. NYCSSS sends hiring updates by email, and a typo there means missed notifications.
  • Work history in reverse chronological order: employer names, addresses, phone numbers, your job titles, approximate start and end dates, and a short description of your duties.
  • Two or three references with current phone numbers. Former supervisors carry more weight than personal references.

Submitting the Online Application

On the portal, create an account with your email and a password, pick the cleaner posting you want, and work through the fields. The form covers personal details, work history, and references. If it asks you to upload documents, have scanned copies of your ID ready as images or PDFs.

Review every field before you hit submit. Mismatched dates, misspelled employer names, or a bad phone number can slow the background verification stage later. Once you submit, the system locks the application from further edits, so the review screen is your last chance to fix anything.

You should get a confirmation email within a few hours. Save it and note any reference number it includes. If nothing arrives, check your spam folder and then contact NYCSSS Human Resources.

Background Check, Fingerprinting, and the $135 Fee

This is where the timeline stretches. The background check typically takes three to four weeks.1NYCSSS. Once the check clears, NYCSSS contacts you with orientation details, your assigned school building, and a start date. Plan for at least four to six weeks between submitting the application and your first day of work.
