Utah Form TC-559 is the payment coupon corporations, S-corporations, and partnerships use to send tax payments to the Utah State Tax Commission. You fill in your entity name, EIN, tax year end date, and payment amount, then submit the coupon with your payment either by mail or online through Utah’s Taxpayer Access Point. The coupon itself takes a minute. Calculating the right amount so you don’t trigger penalties is the harder part.
Who Uses the Coupon and for Which Payments
TC-559 covers three types of entities and three types of payments. Use it if you file any of these Utah returns:
- C-corporations filing Form TC-20
- S-corporations filing Form TC-20S
- Partnerships filing Form TC-65
The same coupon works for quarterly estimated tax installments, extension payments made by the original return deadline, and balances owed when you file the actual return.1Utah State Tax Commission. How Much to Pay
If you’re sending an extension payment, your total prepayments by the original due date (estimates, credits, and the TC-559 payment combined) must equal at least the lesser of:
- 90 percent of the current year’s tax liability, with a $100 floor for corporations, or
- 100 percent of the previous year’s tax liability
Because the rule uses “lesser,” you compare the two numbers and only need to hit the smaller one.1Utah State Tax Commission. Utah Form TC-559 – Corporation/Partnership Payment Coupon Say your company paid $8,000 in Utah tax last year and expects to owe $12,000 this year. The two targets are $10,800 (90 percent of $12,000) and $8,000 (100 percent of last year). The lesser is $8,000, so paying that amount by the original deadline satisfies the safe harbor.
For businesses with revenue that moves year to year, paying 100 percent of the prior year’s tax is the simpler path because you already know the number. The 90-percent route requires an accurate estimate of a liability you haven’t finished calculating, which is often the reason you needed an extension in the first place.
Every corporation filing Form TC-20 owes at least $100 in franchise tax, whether or not it had income or exercised its right to do business in Utah.2Utah State Tax Commission. 2025 TC-20 Instructions
When the Payment Is Due
Calendar-year corporations must file their Utah returns and pay any tax owed by April 15 of the following year. Fiscal-year corporations owe by the 15th day of the fourth month after their tax year closes. Calendar-year partnerships owe by March 15.3Utah State Tax Commission. Utah grants corporations an automatic six-month extension to file and partnerships an automatic five-month extension. No separate extension form is required.4Utah Legislature. Partnership Tax Extension Due Date: Jan-Dec 2025 The extension only gives you more time to file the paperwork. Your tax payment is still due by the original deadline, and TC-559 is how you send it.
Corporations with a Utah tax liability of $3,000 or more in either the current or previous tax year must also make quarterly estimated payments using TC-559. For calendar-year filers, those installments fall on April 15, June 15, September 15, and December 15.2Utah State Tax Commission. 2025 TC-20 Instructions
Filling Out the Coupon
TC-559 is a single-page voucher. You need four pieces of information:
- Entity name, as legally registered
- Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN)
- Tax year end date (for calendar-year filers paying for 2026, that’s December 31, 2026)
- Payment amount
Download the coupon from the Utah State Tax Commission’s website at tax.utah.gov under Forms and Publications.1Utah State Tax Commission. Utah Form TC-559 – Corporation/Partnership Payment Coupon Check the EIN and tax year end date carefully. A mismatched identifier can route the payment to the wrong account or the wrong period, and sorting that out with the Tax Commission takes time.
Submitting by Mail
Mail the completed coupon with a check or money order to:

Use a method with tracking so you can prove the payment was postmarked by the deadline. If you’re close to the due date, certified mail or a commercial carrier with delivery confirmation is worth the extra few dollars.
Paying Online Through TAP
The faster option is Utah’s Taxpayer Access Point at tap.utah.gov. Select your tax type, enter your EIN and entity name, choose the filing period end date, and enter the payment amount. ACH debit from a bank account is free. Credit or debit card payments carry a 3 percent convenience fee.6Utah State Tax Commission. Payment Fees
TAP gives you an immediate confirmation that the payment was submitted. On a large extension payment, ACH avoids the card surcharge. On a $50,000 payment, that 3 percent fee is $1,500.
What Happens If You Underpay or File Late
If your prepayments fall short of the safe harbor on the original due date, Utah charges an extension-period penalty of 2 percent per month on the unpaid tax, calculated daily. The maximum is six months of extension, capping the penalty at 12 percent of the underpayment.7Utah State Tax Commission. Pub 58 On a $20,000 shortfall, six full months comes to $2,400. Filing the return sooner stops the clock.
If you miss the extended deadline without filing, the math changes. Instead of the 2-percent monthly penalty, you face a late-file penalty equal to the greater of $20 or 10 percent of the tax due, plus a separate late-pay penalty equal to the greater of $20 or 10 percent of the unpaid balance.8Utah Legislature. Utah Code 59-1-401 Together, that’s up to 20 percent in penalties on top of the tax.
Interest runs on any unpaid balance regardless of whether the extension applies. The rate for January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2026 is 6 percent annually, calculated daily.7Utah State Tax Commission. Pub 58
After You Submit
Monitor your account to confirm the funds have cleared. If you mailed a check, watch for it to leave your bank account within about ten business days. If you paid through TAP, log in and verify the payment posted to the correct tax period.
Keep the submitted coupon (or your TAP confirmation) with proof of payment. If the Tax Commission later questions whether you met the prepayment threshold, that documentation is your defense. The extension stays valid as long as the safe harbor is met and the return is filed within the extension window: six months for corporations, five months for partnerships.
