When to File the Affidavit

What the Form Asks For
You will identify the vehicle by year, make, model, and the full seventeen-character Vehicle Identification Number, exactly as it appears on your registration or title. The current New Mexico license plate number is also required so the MVD can match the affidavit to the right record.
As the registered owner, you provide your full legal name and mailing address, state the reason the vehicle is not being operated, and affirm under oath that the information is accurate. Write in black or blue ink, and check the VIN and plate number against your existing MVD paperwork. A single wrong digit in the VIN is the kind of error that stalls processing.

Refiling Each Year
The non-use declaration is not a one-time filing. Submit a new MVD-11268 whenever the vehicle’s status changes, such as when you start driving it again or move it to a different location. Even if nothing changes, file a fresh affidavit at least once a year to keep the non-use status active. If the annual renewal lapses, the vehicle can revert to active status in the MVD’s system and trigger insurance verification.
Returning the Vehicle to the Road
Before you drive the vehicle again, reinstate the registration and put insurance back in place.
