How to Fill Out the NJ Driver’s License Renewal Form (BA-208)

To renew your New Jersey driver’s license, complete Form BA-208 (Application for Permit / License / Non-Driver ID) and submit it online, in person at a Motor Vehicle Commission agency, or by mail. The NJ driver’s license renewal form BA-208 costs $24 to file, your renewed license is valid for four years (48 months), and you can start up to six months before your expiration date.¹ Most drivers qualify for online renewal, which takes effect immediately.

Decide Standard or REAL ID Before You Start

The BA-208 asks you to check one box under “Transaction Information”: Standard License or REAL ID License. Make that choice before you pick up the form, because the documents you have to bring depend on it.

As of May 7, 2025, the TSA no longer accepts standard state-issued IDs at airport security for domestic flights.² A REAL ID card carries a gold star in the upper-right corner and is also required to enter certain federal facilities, including military bases. A valid U.S. passport or military ID works at the airport too, so the REAL ID upgrade is optional if you already carry one of those.

A standard license requires one proof of New Jersey residency. A REAL ID requires two. The MVC section of the form has separate document checklists for each.³

Filling Out the BA-208, Field by Field

The BA-208 is a single-page form. You can complete it digitally through the online renewal portal, download the PDF from the MVC website, or pick up a paper copy at a licensing center.³ The MVC also mails a pre-printed renewal notice before your license expires, and that notice may include a personalized version of the form.

Here is what each section asks for:

Your existing New Jersey license number.
Your Social Security number or ITIN.
Full legal name, date of birth, gender, eye color, height, and weight.
Mailing address and residential address. Fill in both fields separately if they differ.
Under Transaction Information: check “Driver License,” then either “Standard” or “Real ID.”
Two yes-or-no questions: whether you hold a valid license in another state or country, and whether your driving privileges are suspended anywhere. Answer honestly. The MVC cross-checks these against national databases, and a false answer is grounds for penalties.

The form has no medical questions or health disclosures for standard (non-commercial) license holders.³ Sign and date the certification at the bottom. That signature carries legal weight: you are certifying under penalty that everything on the form is true. Use blue or black ink on paper copies.

Documents to Have Ready

New Jersey uses a point-based identity verification system. Every applicant must present documents totaling at least six points, plus a Social Security number (or ITIN) and proof of address.⁴ Bring originals or certified copies; photocopies are not accepted at agencies. If you renew online with no name or class changes, the 6-point check happens electronically in the background.

How the Points Work

Documents fall into primary and secondary tiers, and you must submit at least one primary document. A U.S. passport or a certified U.S. birth certificate filed with a state office of vital statistics is worth 4 points. A New Jersey firearm purchaser card or an official school or college photo ID with a transcript showing date of birth is worth 3 points. No more than two 1-point documents count toward your total.⁵ The full list changes occasionally, so check the MVC’s 6 Points of ID page before your visit rather than relying on a list you saved months ago.⁶

Social Security and Residency Proof

Separate from the point total, you need a document showing your Social Security number (Social Security card, W-2, or 1099) and proof that you live in New Jersey. Accepted residency documents include:

An original, unexpired lease or rental agreement with your name as lessee.
A utility or credit card bill issued within the last 90 days.
A bank or credit union statement issued within the last 60 days.
A property deed or title.
First-class mail from a government agency received in the past six months.

Every residency document must show your residential address and your name.⁵ Bring two different residency proofs for a REAL ID and one for a standard license.

Submitting the Form Online

Online renewal is the fastest option and takes effect immediately. Most drivers are eligible, even if their mailed renewal notice says an in-person visit is required.⁷ The portal walks you through the BA-208 fields electronically, verifies your information, and collects the $24 fee.

Two groups cannot renew online: holders of a Commercial Driver License (CDL) and drivers whose visa is expiring.⁷ If your address has changed since your last renewal, update it using the MVC’s separate address-change tool before you start; the renewal portal will not let you change your address during the process.

After payment, print the receipt. Your renewal is active right away, but the physical card takes two to four weeks to arrive by mail.⁷ Carry the printed receipt with your old license in the meantime.

Submitting the Form In Person

If you cannot renew online, or you are upgrading to a REAL ID for the first time, visit a licensing center. You must schedule an appointment through the MVC’s online booking system. Walk-ins are not accepted for license renewals.⁷

Bring your completed BA-208, your full 6 Points of ID documentation, proof of your Social Security number, and residency proof (two proofs for REAL ID). The $24 fee can be paid by credit or debit card, cash, check, or money order payable to NJMVC.⁷ Additional fees apply if you add an endorsement such as a motorcycle class. The agency takes a new photo and issues a temporary paper receipt, and a vision screening may be done on the spot. Your permanent card arrives in two to four weeks.

Submitting the Form by Mail

Mail-in renewal is primarily for drivers temporarily living outside New Jersey who cannot visit an agency. Include in your envelope:

Your completed BA-208 form.
A check or money order for $24 payable to NJMVC.
Photocopies of your 6 Points of ID.
Proof of your permanent New Jersey address.
Your current out-of-state or out-of-country address.
A letter explaining why you cannot visit the MVC and when you plan to return.
A prepaid return envelope.

Mail the packet to: NJ Motor Vehicle Commission, Government In-House Unit, 225 East State Street, P.O. Box 016, Trenton, New Jersey 08666-0016. The new license goes to the out-of-state address you provide. If you are renewing by mail from within New Jersey using a standard renewal mailer, expect the new license within about 10 business days. Call the MVC at (609) 292-6500 if it has not arrived within 20 days.

If Your License Has Already Expired

Driving on an expired license in New Jersey is a violation under Title 39, punishable by a fine of up to $500, up to 60 days in county jail, or both.⁸

If your license expired recently, you can still renew through the normal process, and the MVC does not charge a separate late fee. There is one hard cutoff: if your license has been expired for more than three years, you must start over as a first-time driver, including the written knowledge test, vision screening, and road test.⁷ If you are anywhere near that three-year mark, renew now, even if you are not driving regularly.

Military and Family Extensions

Active-duty military personnel deployed or scheduled for deployment outside New Jersey can renew up to six months before their deployment date, and so can immediate family members (spouse, domestic partner, civil union partner, children, stepchildren, or legal dependents).⁹

If your license expires while you are deployed, New Jersey law extends its validity through the deployment and for up to 90 days after you return or are demobilized. To use the extension, carry your driver’s license, your official deployment orders, and a copy of the administrative order issued by the MVC. The extension does not waive the $24 renewal fee; you still pay that when you eventually renew.⁹
