Who Qualifies for Endorsement

- You graduated from a nurse aide program approved by your original state that meets the clinical training and competency standards in 42 CFR 483.152. Federal rules set a floor of 75 clock hours; many states require more.
- You passed the competency evaluation your original state administered after training.
- You currently hold active registration in another state with no finding of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of property on any nurse aide registry.
- You submit the required application through Virginia’s online portal.
- You arrange verification from the credentialing agency in every state where you have been registered, certified, or licensed, unless that state offers electronic verification.

What to Have Ready Before You Start
The most common reason an endorsement application stalls is missing paperwork. Pull everything together first.
You will need your Social Security number, your current CNA certification number, and the name and location of the training program you completed. Have contact information for every state registry where you have held nurse aide status, because Virginia requires verification from each.
Start the out-of-state verification step early. How to Submit the Application

Create an account, fill in your personal and certification details, and upload supporting documents. A non-refundable application fee is collected during submission. Check the Board’s current fee schedule for the amount, since it can change between regulatory cycles.6Virginia Board of Nursing. Review every field before you hit submit. The Board will not process incomplete applications, and fixing errors afterward can reset your place in the processing queue.
Processing Time and Approval
Complete applications are processed within 30 business days — roughly six weeks — from the date the Board has both your application and your fee.1Virginia Board of Nursing. That public listing is your proof of certification. Employers and staffing agencies check the registry before extending offers, so once your active status shows, you can start working. Do not expect a mailed paper certificate.
What Commonly Delays Endorsement
Most delays come from a small set of preventable issues.
- Verification from a prior state that has not arrived by the time your file is reviewed. Contact those registries early.
- A finding of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation on any state registry, including one you have not worked in for years. If something appears that you believe is wrong, resolve it with the originating state before applying to Virginia.
- A lapsed certification in your original state. You must be currently registered elsewhere. If your credential has expired, you may need to reinstate it in that state first or look at Virginia’s other pathways to certification.
- Training documentation that does not clearly meet 42 CFR 483.152. Programs shorter than the federal 75-hour minimum are the most likely to trigger a request for additional education before endorsement is granted.
After You Are on the Registry
Once your active status appears on the registry, you work under the same rules as any Virginia-certified nurse aide, providing services under the supervision of a licensed health care professional as set out in Chapter 30 of Title 54.1.8Virginia Code Commission.
