How to Find or Recover Your New Jersey Tax ID Number

Your New Jersey tax ID number is the 12-digit number the state assigned when you registered your business through Form NJ-REG. The fastest way to find it is to pull the welcome letter the Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services mailed you at registration. If that letter is gone, the number also appears on your Business Registration Certificate, any state tax return you’ve filed, and inside your account on the NJ Tax Portal. When none of those work, call the Division of Taxation at 609-292-6400 and they can look it up after verifying your identity.

What the Number Looks Like

Knowing the format helps you spot it on paperwork. For most businesses, the NJ Tax ID is your nine-digit federal EIN with a three-digit suffix appended, usually “000.”1Business.NJ.gov. The state ID is not the same as your federal EIN. The EIN identifies your business to the IRS. The NJ Tax ID identifies it to the state for sales tax, employer withholding, unemployment contributions, and other state-level obligations.1Business.NJ.gov. Register Your Business

Check Your Own Records First

Before you call anyone, look through what you already have. The number is on more documents than most owners remember.

  • The welcome letter from the Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services, which lists your 12-digit Tax ID along with a four-digit PIN.3State of NJ – NJ Treasury – Taxation. Business Tax PIN, Password, and Passcode Requests
  • Your Business Registration Certificate, which shows the Taxpayer ID alongside the business name and certification dates.4New Jersey Economic Development Authority. Business Registration Certificate
  • Any previously filed state return. Sales and Use Tax returns (Form ST-50) print it in the “Taxpayer ID#” field. Employer withholding returns (NJ-927 and NJ-500) show it near the top.
  • Notices, assessments, or billing letters from the Division of Taxation, which all reference the number.

The welcome letter is the single most useful document. It carries the PIN you need for state filing systems, so if you can find it, you save yourself a second recovery step later.

Look It Up on the NJ Tax Portal

If your paper records are missing, the NJ Tax Portal at taxportal.nj.gov is the next stop. Sign in to your account and your Tax ID appears on the dashboard. The portal handles sales and use tax and other tax types that have been migrated onto the newer platform.

If you never created a portal profile, you can register one directly on the site, though setting up the account is easier when you already know the number you’re trying to recover. In that case, calling is usually faster.

Call the Division of Taxation

When you can’t find the number in your records and can’t get into the portal, call the Division of Taxation’s main taxpayer service line at 609-292-6400, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.5NJ Division of Taxation. Telephone Assistance The line covers both individual and business tax questions, including Tax ID retrieval.

Have this ready before you dial:

  • Your legal business name, exactly as registered with the state
  • The business address the state has on file
  • Your federal EIN, or your Social Security Number if you registered as a sole proprietor without an EIN
  • The name and title of an authorized contact for the business

The Division also runs an automated line at 609-826-4400 (toll-free 800-323-4400), but that one only requests forms and publications and won’t pull up your account.6Cornell Law School Legal Information Institute. NJ Admin Code 18:1-1.2

Sole Proprietors Can Often Reconstruct the Number

If you’re a sole proprietor who registered without a federal EIN, you don’t necessarily need to call anyone. The state built your 12-digit NJ Tax ID from your Social Security Number followed by the “000” suffix.2NJ.gov. The same reconstruction works if you registered with an EIN: nine-digit EIN plus 000. This won’t cover the rare case where the state assigned a different three-digit suffix, but for most filers the standard “000” is what’s on file.

If You Never Actually Registered

Some owners searching for their Tax ID discover the reason they can’t find it is that they never registered in the first place.
