Your California EBT case number appears on every Notice of Action your county has mailed you, and it also shows up inside your BenefitsCal account once your case is linked. If you can’t find either, call the EBT Customer Service Helpline at (877) 328-9677 or contact your county social services office. The case number is not the same as the 16-digit number printed on your EBT card: the card number is for purchases and ATM withdrawals, while the case number ties you to the programs you’re enrolled in, like CalFresh or CalWORKs.
Check Your County Mail First
The quickest place to look is any paperwork your county social services office has sent you. Every time your county approves, changes, or denies benefits, it mails a Notice of Action. Your case number is printed near the top of the form, usually in the header alongside your name and the worker assigned to your case. Annual recertification packets carry the same number.
Check any folder, envelope, or drawer where you keep government mail. Even an old notice from a previous benefit period will have the right number, because it stays the same as long as your case remains in the system. If you’ve recently moved and your mail hasn’t caught up, the options below will get you the same information.
Log Into BenefitsCal
BenefitsCal is the statewide online portal where California residents apply for, view, and renew public assistance benefits. It replaced older county-specific systems to create a single platform for all 58 counties.1BenefitsCal. BenefitsCal If you already have an account, log in and look for your case information on the dashboard. The portal requires two-step verification, so you’ll need to enter a one-time code sent to the email or phone number linked to your account.2BenefitsCal. BenefitsCal
One catch: BenefitsCal may ask you to “Link a Case” before it will show your benefit details, and linking a case usually requires the case number you’re trying to find. If you hit that wall, skip ahead to the phone options. When linking does work, the portal pulls directly from CalSAWS, so what you see is current.3California Department of Social Services. Call the EBT Customer Service Helpline
If your paperwork is missing and the portal isn’t cooperating, call the California EBT Customer Service Helpline at (877) 328-9677. The line is run through the system managed by FIS, which operates California’s EBT infrastructure.4California Department of Social Services. Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) Card Have your EBT card with you when you call, since the automated system will ask for your card number to pull up your account. A representative can confirm your case number once your identity is verified. The helpline operates around the clock, so you’re not stuck waiting for business hours.
Contact Your County Social Services Office
Your county is the definitive source for anything related to your case. The California Department of Social Services does not process applications or maintain individual case files; all of that work happens at the county level.5California Department of Social Services. Frequently Asked Questions Contact information for every county’s office is listed on the CDSS website.6California Department of Social Services. Contact Your County
Be ready to verify your identity. Expect to provide your full name, date of birth, and Social Security number. Once the eligibility worker confirms who you are, they can give you the case number over the phone or print a budget sheet that includes it. An in-person visit also gives you a chance to update your contact information, which helps prevent future problems with missed mail or locked online accounts.
Call volumes can be heavy around recertification periods. Mornings early in the week tend to have the shortest waits. If you only need the number and nothing else, the EBT helpline is usually faster.
What About the ebtEDGE App?
The ebtEDGE mobile app, endorsed by CDSS and managed by FIS, lets you check your CalFresh and CalWORKs balances and view up to a year of transaction history.7California Department of Social Services. ebtEDGE It’s built around balances and transactions, not case details. Your case number may appear on some screens, but the app isn’t a reliable place to hunt for it. If that’s all you need, use one of the methods above.
Why You Need Your Case Number
Your case number ties every official action to your file, so you’ll want it in hand before you file paperwork or report a problem. Two deadlines are worth knowing in advance:
If you disagree with something your county has done with your benefits, such as reducing or ending them, California gives you 90 days from the date a Notice of Action is mailed to request a state fair hearing.8California Department of Social Services. Public Appeal Request – ACMS The hearing request form asks for your case number.
If benefits were stolen through card skimming or a scam involving someone impersonating an EBT vendor or government agency, California can replace both food and cash benefits, but you must file a Report of Electronic Theft (Form EBT 2259) within 90 calendar days of the theft date. The form can be submitted online through BenefitsCal or in person at your county office. Cash benefit replacements for scams are limited to once every 36 months.9California Department of Social Services.
