How to Get a Bonded Title in Alabama: Bond Amounts, Costs, and Steps

To get a bonded title in Alabama, you file an electronic surety bond request with the Alabama Department of Revenue (ALDOR), buy a surety bond in the standardized amount set for your vehicle’s type and age, get the VIN inspected, and submit the package with a $15 title fee to your county tag office. The title you receive is branded as bonded for three years, after which it can convert to a standard title if no one has challenged your ownership.

When a Bonded Title Is the Right Fix

A bonded title is for situations where you possess a vehicle but can’t prove ownership through normal paperwork. Common examples: you bought from a private seller who never gave you a title, the title you received was improperly signed or assigned, or you lost the title before transferring it into your name. Alabama also requires a bonded title for vehicles purchased from a non-bonded agent, and for vehicles bought from a bonded agent when you fail to apply for a title within one calendar year of the purchase date.1Alabama Department of Revenue. If you already have an Alabama title in your name and just lost it, you don’t need a bonded title. You need a replacement title, available through ALDOR’s Public Title Portal or any designated agent for $15.2Alabama Department of Revenue. FAQ Categories – Title Applications

Eligibility and Documentation

You need to show a legitimate claim to the vehicle. A bill of sale is the cleanest proof, but any documentation showing how you acquired the vehicle helps. The vehicle can’t be reported stolen and can’t have any unreleased liens against it. Vehicles purchased strictly for parts, and vehicles missing an engine, aren’t eligible.
