You can get a California hunting license online through the Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Automated License Data System at licenses.wildlife.ca.gov. A resident annual license runs $62.90 and covers the license year from July 1 through June 30.1California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Hunting License Items and Fees Before the site will let you check out, you need a GO ID on file and accepted proof of hunter education attached to your record. The rest is a standard online cart.
What You Need Before You Start
Two things gate the purchase. If either is missing, the system will not add a hunting license to your cart.
A GO ID
Every California hunter has a Get Outdoors Identification number, or GO ID. It’s the unique identifier that ties your licenses, tags, preference points, and harvest reporting together, and it prints on every license document.2California Department of Fish and Wildlife. CDFW Online License Sales If you’ve ever bought a California fishing or hunting license, you already have one; sign in at the ALDS portal with your name and date of birth to pull it up. First-time buyers create a new record by entering their full legal name, mailing address, date of birth, and email. Get the mailing address right. Tags and report cards ship by mail, and an error there delays everything.
Proof of Hunter Education
Fish and Game Code Section 3050 requires proof of hunter education before you can buy a license. Acceptable proof includes a certificate from a California-approved hunter education course, evidence of a California hunting license issued in a prior year, a current or recent out-of-state or out-of-province license (issued within the previous two years), or a hunter education certificate from another state.3California Legislative Information. New hunters taking the course should know that California no longer offers an online-only hunter education option. The course now requires an in-person component.4California Department of Fish and Wildlife. California Hunter Education Instructors generally ask that students be at least 10 years old. Statute sets no hard minimum age for the license itself as long as the applicant can show hunter education.5California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Hunting Licenses and Tags
If you took your course in California, your certificate number is automatically added to your CDFW record. If your certificate is from another state, upload it through your account or email it to CDFW’s licensing office and allow up to five business days for processing.2California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Buying the License on ALDS
Go to licenses.wildlife.ca.gov and click Customer Login/Register. Sign in with your GO ID, or create your customer record if this is your first purchase.
From the purchase menu, select your base license. A resident annual license is $62.90. A nonresident annual license is $219.81. Junior licenses are available at a reduced fee for younger hunters.1California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Hunting License Items and Fees Fees change year to year, so confirm the current amount on the fee schedule before you pay. Buying mid-year does not get you a prorated discount; the license runs through June 30 regardless of when in the year you buy it.5California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Hunting Licenses and Tags
With the base license in your cart, add any validations or tags you need (see the next section). Review the running total, then enter your credit or debit card, billing address, and security code. Double-check the confirmation screen before you submit, because the transaction is binding once you click.
At the end of checkout, the site prompts you to download and print your license and receipt. The printed license is your temporary authorization and is valid immediately for anything the base license covers.2California Department of Fish and Wildlife. For the 2026 license year, sales open April 15, 2026. The deadline to apply for drawing tags (elk, antelope, and certain deer zones) is June 2, 2026.2California Department of Fish and Wildlife. CDFW Online License Sales
Add-Ons for Specific Game
The base license alone covers general small game. For almost anything else you’d actually want to hunt, you need a validation or a tag on top of the license.1California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Hunting License Items and Fees Common ones:
- Upland Game Bird Validation ($24.84) for quail, pheasant, chukar, and similar species
- Wild Pig Validation ($27.57 resident, $98.85 nonresident)
- Resident deer tags ($41.30 first, $51.58 second); hunters are capped at two per license year, and you have to buy or apply for the first before adding a second
- Bear tag ($61.30 resident)
Elk, pronghorn, and bighorn sheep tags are drawing-only, with each drawing application costing $8.13. Deer tags can be bought outright for some zones and are drawing-only for others.1California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Hunting License Items and Fees
Waterfowl hunters need two extra items that are easy to overlook. A Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp (the Duck Stamp) costs $25 and runs July 1 to June 30; both the physical stamp and the electronic E-Stamp are valid, but a store receipt alone is not legal proof.6U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Buy a Duck Stamp or Electronic Duck Stamp (E-Stamp) Harvest Information Program (HIP) registration is also required each year, is free in California, and is usually handled during the license purchase.
One reporting rule worth noting now: deer tag holders who don’t return their tag or report online by January 31 pay a $21.60 non-reporting fee on their next deer tag or drawing application. Report whether or not you filled the tag.1California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Hunting License Items and Fees
What You Can Print and What Ships by Mail
This is where first-time buyers get tripped up. Your base hunting license can be downloaded and printed as soon as you check out. Report cards, physical tags, and waterfowl passes cannot. Those are mail-fulfilled only, and CDFW asks that you allow at least 15 days for them to arrive.2California Department of Fish and Wildlife. CDFW Online License Sales
That window matters near a season opener. If your deer tag hasn’t shown up by opening day, you cannot legally hunt deer. The receipt is not a substitute for the physical tag. Buy well ahead of any season you plan to hunt.
Carrying Your License in the Field
California does not require you to carry the physical license card if you display it through the official CDFW License App on your phone. The app pulls your record directly from the CDFW database, and game wardens accept the in-app display as legal proof.7California Department of Fish and Wildlife. CDFW License App
Screenshots and photos of the license are not valid. You have to display it from inside the app. If your battery dies or the screen fails and you have no physical backup, you’re in violation of Fish and Game Code Section 1054.2. Physical tags must still be in your immediate possession at all times, app or no app.7California Department of Fish and Wildlife. CDFW License App The practical move is to use the app and keep a printed copy of the license in your pack as backup, with tags stored in a waterproof sleeve so they stay legible all season.
Hunting without a valid license in your possession, or hunting without a license at all, is a misdemeanor under the Fish and Game Code and carries fines that climb well into the four figures once state and county surcharges are added.8California Legislative Information. California Fish and Game Code FGC 12000 A convicted violation can also affect your ability to buy future licenses and tags.
