To get a concealed carry permit in Columbus, GA, apply in person at the Muscogee County Probate Court, bring two forms of ID, pay the $77 fee, and complete fingerprinting. Most applicants receive the license by mail within 30 to 45 days. Georgia calls it a Weapons Carry License, and it covers both concealed and open carry.
Do You Even Need a License in Georgia
Not to carry inside Georgia. Since 2022, the state has allowed permitless carry, meaning any Georgian who can legally possess a firearm may carry it openly or concealed without paperwork.
The license still does real work, though. It gives you reciprocity with more than 30 states that have agreements with Georgia, including Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Texas, and South Carolina.1Georgia Department of Public Safety. Georgia Firearm Permit Reciprocity Without it, you have no proof of legal carry status the moment you cross into a state that requires a permit.
The license also qualifies you for the federal Gun-Free School Zones Act exemption. Federal law generally prohibits firearm possession within 1,000 feet of school grounds, but 18 U.S.C. § 922(q)(2)(B)(ii) exempts holders of a state license that required a law enforcement background check. Georgia’s license requires exactly that check; permitless carriers do not get the exemption.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 U.S. Code 922 – Unlawful Acts
And in any encounter with law enforcement, the physical card is immediate, verifiable proof that you cleared a criminal background check.
Who Qualifies
You must be at least 21. The one exception: applicants aged 18 to 20 who have completed U.S. Armed Forces basic training and are either actively serving or honorably discharged. All those conditions must be met together.3Justia. Georgia Code 16-11-129 – Weapons Carry License
You must live in Muscogee County to apply at the Columbus probate court. Active-duty military stationed at Fort Moore or another installation in the county can apply here even if they are not Georgia residents.3Justia. Georgia Code 16-11-129 – Weapons Carry License
Under O.C.G.A. § 16-11-129(b), the main disqualifiers are:
- Any felony conviction from any court, unless pardoned.
- Pending felony charges.
- Fugitive status.
- Any federal firearms prohibition under 18 U.S.C. § 922(g) or (n), which includes misdemeanor domestic violence convictions and certain protective orders.
- Any conviction for unlawful manufacture or distribution of a controlled substance.
- A drug-related misdemeanor, which disqualifies you for five years after completing all supervision.
- Inpatient treatment at any mental health facility or drug and alcohol treatment center within the past five years.
- Adjudication as mentally incompetent to stand trial or a finding of not guilty by reason of insanity.
A prior license revocation blocks you for three years, and a conviction for carrying in an unauthorized location under O.C.G.A. § 16-11-127 creates a five-year wait after supervision ends.3Justia. Georgia Code 16-11-129 – Weapons Carry License
What to Bring
The Muscogee County Probate Court asks for two forms of ID: a birth certificate or U.S. passport, plus a Georgia driver’s license or state-issued ID showing your current Muscogee County address. If your license still shows an old address, update it before you go. The court may turn you away.4Muscogee County Probate Court. Weapons Carry License
Active-duty service members carrying an out-of-state driver’s license also need a military ID and a current lease or utility bill (electric, water, or gas) showing a Muscogee County or Fort Moore address.4Muscogee County Probate Court. Weapons Carry License
The application asks for your full legal name, previous addresses, Social Security number, and details about your criminal history, substance use, and mental health treatment. Answer honestly. Lying on the form violates O.C.G.A. § 16-10-20 and carries one to five years in prison, a fine up to $1,000, or both.5Justia. How the Application Works
Applications are walk-in only. You can start the form on the probate court’s website before your visit, but you have to appear in person to finish the paperwork and pay.4Muscogee County Probate Court. Weapons Carry License
The fee is $77. Of that, $30 is the statutory probate court fee; the rest covers the fingerprint-based background check run through the Georgia Crime Information Center and the FBI.3Justia. Georgia Code 16-11-129 – Weapons Carry License Call the court before your visit to confirm which payment methods are accepted, since those policies can change.
After the clerk accepts your application, you will be sent for digital fingerprinting. The statute requires the probate judge to forward those prints to the Georgia Crime Information Center and the FBI within five business days of receiving the application.3Justia. Georgia Code 16-11-129 – Weapons Carry License Once results come back and the judge approves you, the license is mailed to your address. Plan on 30 to 45 days, though heavy volume or delays at the state or federal level can push it out.
Renewing Your License
The license is valid for five years.3Justia. Georgia Code 16-11-129 – Weapons Carry License You can renew at the Muscogee County Probate Court starting 90 days before expiration and up to 30 days after. The renewal fee at this court is $35. Bring your current Muscogee County driver’s license or state ID and your existing license. Renewals do not require new fingerprints.4Muscogee County Probate Court. Weapons Carry License
Miss the 30-day post-expiration window and you cannot renew. You start over as a new applicant, with fingerprints and the full $77 fee. Put the renewal date on your calendar well in advance. Five years is long enough to forget.
What Happens If You’re Denied
Under O.C.G.A. § 16-11-129(j), a denial is not the end. You can request a hearing before the probate judge to show that you meet all qualifications. If the judge still denies you, or if the court never processes your application at all, you can file a mandamus action to compel issuance. The judge is required to inform you of these rights when issuing a denial.3Justia. Georgia Code 16-11-129 – Weapons Carry License
Win the appeal or mandamus action, and you can recover your costs, including reasonable attorney’s fees. The provision exists in part because probate courts sometimes delay, and the legislature wanted applicants to have leverage.
Where the License Still Doesn’t Let You Carry
Holding the license does not open every door. Georgia’s O.C.G.A. § 16-11-127 makes courthouses and jails off-limits to everyone regardless of license status; carrying into either is a misdemeanor. Government buildings depend on screening: if the building is open for business without security screening at the entrance, a lawful weapons carrier may enter armed, but if there is screening staffed by a certified peace officer, weapons are prohibited. The statute lets you leave without penalty once you realize screening is in place.6Justia. Georgia Code 16-11-127 – Carrying Weapons or Long Guns in Unauthorized Locations
Houses of worship require permission from the governing body of the congregation, given orally or in writing. Private property owners can always prohibit firearms on their premises; refusing to comply can lead to trespassing charges. And on federal property, including post offices, federal courthouses, Social Security offices, and VA hospitals, the license carries no weight at all under 18 U.S.C. § 930.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 USC 930 – Possession of Firearms and Dangerous Weapons in Federal Facilities
