How to Get a Copy of Your Car Registration Online in NJ

To get a copy of your car registration online in NJ, use the Motor Vehicle Commission’s duplicate registration service on nj.gov/mvc. You enter your plate number, Social Security number, email, and insurance details, pay the fee, and the MVC emails you a PDF of the registration right away. A paper card follows in the mail. Since March 2023, the PDF itself is legally valid proof of registration, so you can drive on it immediately.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. What to Have Ready Before You Start

Only the primary owner on the registration can file the request online. You’ll need:

  • Your Social Security number
  • Your license plate number
  • An email address for the PDF
  • Your insurance company name and policy number

Up to five duplicates can be ordered in a single transaction, with a limit of four family duplicates.3Legal Information Institute. N.J. Admin. Code 13:21-9.6 – Application for Renewal or Duplicate of Vehicle Registration in Electronic or Digital Form; Eligibility

When the Online Option Won’t Work

The online system isn’t open to every registration. You cannot use it if any of the following applies:

  • The vehicle is leased
  • The registration is commercial
  • The registration is expired or suspended
  • The plates were reported lost, stolen, or surrendered
  • The plates are no-fee plates
  • An address change was made within 14 business days before or after the request
  • The registration is in the name of someone who has died

In any of these situations, you’ll have to handle the duplicate at an MVC agency in person.3Legal Information Institute. N.J. Admin. Code 13:21-9.6 – Application for Renewal or Duplicate of Vehicle Registration in Electronic or Digital Form; Eligibility

What It Costs

The MVC fee depends on your registration type:

  • $5 for a one-year passenger or commercial registration
  • $5 for the final year of a four-year accelerated registration
  • $11 during the first three years of a four-year accelerated registration

The same fees apply in person, and the online processor’s service charge is added on top of the MVC amount.4New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Registration and Title Fees – Section: Fees for Duplicate or a Replacement of Original Registration Documentation

Using the PDF as Your Registration

The emailed PDF is a legally valid document under a change the MVC put in place in March 2023. Save it to your phone, download it, or print it, and it will satisfy a police officer, court, or anyone else who asks to see your registration.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Driving Without a Registration Card

Under N.J.S.A. 39:3-29, being stopped without your registration card carries a $150 fine. Drivers must keep both the registration and insurance card with them at all times when operating a vehicle in the state.5NJ Courts. NJ Courts Bail Schedule – Motor Vehicle Violations

If you can show the municipal court judge a registration that was valid on the date of the stop, the judge can dismiss the charge, though you may still owe court costs. That’s why getting the online duplicate quickly is worth doing before your court date, even if the paper card hasn’t arrived yet.
