To get a copy of a Certificate of Authority in NJ, submit a request to the Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services (DORES) through its online Business Records Service portal, by mail, or by courier for expedited handling. The online route is the fastest and cheapest; mail is the slowest; courier delivery to the Trenton street address triggers 8.5-business-hour processing for an added fee.
Make Sure the Certificate of Authority Is What You Actually Need
A New Jersey Certificate of Authority is the document DORES issues to a foreign corporation, LLC, or partnership after it registers to do business in the state. It confirms that an out-of-state entity has met New Jersey’s filing requirements and is authorized to operate here.1Cornell Law School. New Jersey Admin Code 18-7-14.1 – Tax Clearance Certificate If you formed your business in another state and later qualified in New Jersey, this is the document a copy request would produce.
Two other documents are frequently confused with it. A Standing Certificate proves that an entity currently on file is in good legal standing, and it is what banks, lenders, and other states usually ask for when you apply for financing or register in a new jurisdiction.2State of NJ – NJ Treasury – DORES – NJ.gov. Standing Certificates A certified copy is a reproduction of any filed document, such as your original formation certificate or an amendment, that bears the state seal for court and government use. If the party who asked you for a document did not specifically say “Certificate of Authority,” confirm which one they want before you pay for the wrong thing.
What to Have Ready
You need two pieces of information to pull the right record: your business’s exact legal name and its 10-digit Entity ID, which DORES assigned when the business was formed or authorized in New Jersey.3Business.NJ.gov. Register Your Business Having both prevents delays from common-name confusion.
Decide up front whether you need a plain copy or a certified copy. Certified copies carry the state seal and are the version accepted for court filings, government submissions, and formal transactions. Plain copies are for internal use. The price gap is significant, so buying the wrong tier means either paying again or paying for more than you needed.
Before you order, verify your entity status for free through the Business Records Service portal by searching your name or Entity ID.4Division of Revenue & Enterprise Services. Order Online
The DORES Business Records Service portal is the fastest option. From the main page, choose “Business Entity Documents” for a certified or plain copy of a filed document such as the Certificate of Authority, or “Business Entity Standing Certificates” if you have concluded you actually need a Standing Certificate.5Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services Online Help. Search by Entity ID or business name, select the specific document you want, and proceed to payment. The portal accepts credit cards and electronic checks; depository accounts are not accepted for online orders. Credit card payments process the same day. Large e-check orders may be held for up to 10 business days before documents are released.
After payment, a confirmation page shows a download link. Copy-work orders are usually ready within 30 minutes and can take up to 24 hours. Everything is delivered electronically; DORES will not mail paper copies for online requests. The download stays available for 30 days, so save it right away.
Order by Mail
To submit a paper request, send the completed request form from the DORES website, payment, and a self-addressed stamped envelope to:

Make checks or money orders payable to “Treasurer, State of New Jersey.” A wrong payee or wrong amount gets the request rejected and returned. Because plain-copy pricing depends on page count and is hard to calculate in advance, you can write “not to exceed” followed by a maximum dollar amount on the check.
Plan on several business days to two weeks for processing and return delivery through USPS.

If Your Business Is Not in Good Standing
If your entity has been revoked or voided, you cannot obtain a certificate confirming active authority until you reinstate. Revocation typically follows two consecutive years of missed annual reports or missed tax filings, and a revoked entity also cannot maintain a lawsuit in New Jersey courts until its charter is restored.10State of NJ – NJ Treasury – DORES – NJ.gov. Reinstate a Revoked or Voided Business
Start with the online reinstatement service on the DORES website. You will need your Entity ID and the month and year the business was originally formed or authorized. The system tells you whether a tax clearance certificate from the Division of Taxation is required. If it is not, you can complete the reinstatement online; if it is, the system generates the application and Taxation reviews your account for outstanding liabilities before issuing clearance. Once reinstated, you can request the copy through any of the methods above.
