How to Get a Copy of Your New York Registration

To get a copy of your New York registration, file a Duplicate Registration application (Form MV-82D) with the New York State DMV and pay a $3.00 fee. You can do it online, by mail, or in person, and the online and in-person routes give you a printable or paper temporary registration the same day while the permanent document comes by mail.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Online

This is the fastest option. You’ll need your plate or registration number, your registration class, the ZIP code the DMV has on file, and a credit card or PINless debit card. Once the transaction goes through, you can download and print a temporary registration valid until the date printed on it, and the DMV emails you a copy as a backup. The permanent document arrives in the mail afterward.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Replace a Registration

Not every vehicle qualifies online. Pre-1973 vehicles, motorcycles and others with plate stickers, trailers, transporter vehicles, boats, snowmobiles, ATVs, vehicles with an expired, surrendered, suspended, or revoked registration, and vehicles registered through the DMV’s International Registration Bureau all have to go through mail or in-person channels instead.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. By Mail

Download Form MV-82D from the DMV website, fill it out, and send it with a photocopy of your New York driver’s license (or other proof of identity) and a $3.00 check or money order payable to the “Commissioner of Motor Vehicles.” The address is:2New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Mail requests do not come with a temporary registration, so expect about two weeks before anything reaches you. If you need to drive sooner and have no copy on hand, choose one of the other two methods.

In Person

Bring the completed Form MV-82D, your New York driver’s license, permit, or non-driver ID, and the $3.00 fee to any DMV office. Cash and card are both accepted. The office issues a temporary registration on the spot, so you leave with a valid document the same day, and the permanent replacement is mailed to the address on file. Fee and Timeline

The replacement fee is $3.00 whether you go online, by mail, or in person, and it covers both the registration document and the windshield sticker.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Replace a Registration Online and in-person requests include an immediate temporary registration, so you’re covered while the permanent document works its way through the mail, typically within about two weeks. Mail-only requests have no temporary coverage, so the full wait applies from the day you send the envelope. Replacing your plates at the same time adds separate fees.

When Form MV-82D Is Not the Right Form

Form MV-82D only works if your name and vehicle information are not changing. If you also need to update your name or correct vehicle details, use the broader Vehicle Registration/Title Application (Form MV-82), which handles the replacement and the change in a single submission.3New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Your address matters too. The replacement is mailed to whatever address the DMV has on file, so if you have moved and never updated it, the document will go to your old place. Update the address first, or handle both at once with Form MV-82.

Only the registered owner or an authorized representative can request a duplicate. For a leased vehicle, the lessee is usually the registrant even though the leasing company holds the title, so the registrant can replace the registration directly.4New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Register a Leased Vehicle This process replaces the registration document and sticker only; a lost title is a separate application with its own fee.

Why Replace It Quickly

Under New York Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 401, a police officer or motor vehicle inspector can ask you to produce your registration certificate at any stop. If the vehicle lacks a valid windshield sticker showing the plate number, VIN, and expiration date, not having the certificate is treated as presumptive evidence that the vehicle is unregistered, which carries a fine of $75 to $300, up to 15 days in jail, or both.5New York State Senate. A photocopy of the original certificate satisfies the law, so if you still have a readable copy, keep it in the vehicle while the replacement is on its way. If you have nothing at all, order the duplicate now and use the online or in-person route to get a temporary the same day.
