What to Have Ready Before You Log In

Missing any one of these will stop the transaction cold. Gather them first:

  • Your full license plate number.
  • The first eight digits of your vehicle’s title number, from your title certificate or a prior registration card.
  • Insurance details: insurer name, policy number, effective date, and expiration date.
  • Your current odometer reading.
  • Your Pennsylvania driver’s license number.

Have a working printer connected and ready before you start. That part is not optional.

Requesting the Duplicate Through PennDOT

Go to PennDOT’s Online Driver and Vehicle Services page and open the vehicle services section.2Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Online Driver and Vehicle Services Sign in, select the duplicate registration option, and enter your plate number, the first eight digits of the title number, insurance information, and odometer reading. Check every field before submitting. A typo in the title number will bounce the request.

Once the request goes through, the portal displays a registration credential on screen. That is your valid registration card. Print it immediately. Why You Actually Need to Print It

Pennsylvania law requires you to keep the registration card in the vehicle and produce it on an officer’s demand under 75 Pa.C.S. § 1311.3Trellis. Update Your Address First If You’ve Moved

PennDOT’s online portal treats an address change as a separate transaction from a duplicate registration.2Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. When You Can’t Use the Online Portal

If you don’t have a printer, or you can’t locate your title number, two other paths work.

By Mail

Complete Form MV-44, “Application for Duplicate Registration Card or Replacement of Lost, Stolen or Defaced Registration Plate,” filling out Sections A, B, and D for a duplicate card.5Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). Through an Authorized Agent or Messenger

PennDOT-authorized agents and messengers are private businesses that process vehicle transactions on PennDOT’s behalf, and many are connected directly to PennDOT, so they can print a registration card and hand it to you over the counter.7Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. What PennDOT Charges

  • Online through PennDOT: no fee.
  • At the time of registration, renewal, or transfer: $2.
  • Standalone request at any other time by mail or in person: $7.

Agent service fees are on top of those amounts. For most drivers with a working printer and their title number in hand, the online route is free, immediate, and finished before a mailed form would even reach Harrisburg.
