To get a copy of your vehicle registration in Louisiana, apply for a duplicate through the Office of Motor Vehicles online at Expresslane, by mail, or in person at an OMV Customer Service Center or Public Tag Agent. Walking into a Public Tag Agent office is the fastest route because many can print the duplicate on the spot; the online portal is the fastest option that doesn’t require leaving home.

Louisiana law requires you to carry your registration certificate in the vehicle at all times and to apply for a duplicate immediately if the original is lost.¹ Driving without it is a citable offense.²

What You Need Before You Apply

What you gather depends on which route you take. The online process is stripped down; mail and in-person applications ask for more.

For an Online Application

You need three pieces of information from your most recent registration or renewal notice:

Your current license plate number
Your vehicle’s model year
The month and year your current registration sticker expires

You do not need your VIN, proof of insurance, or any physical document to complete the online request.³

For a Mail or In-Person Application

Your 17-digit VIN or current plate number
The vehicle’s make and model
Proof of insurance (a current liability card or declaration page)

The DPSMV 1799 includes a sworn statement that you carry the liability insurance Louisiana requires, and the OMV will not process the application without proof of active coverage.⁴

What It Costs

Online: an electronic commerce service charge set by the state treasurer. Expect a total around $15.

Applying Online

If you need the certificate quickly, an in-person visit is usually your best option because many offices can print the duplicate on the spot. You have two choices.

OMV Customer Service Centers

State-run OMV offices handle duplicate registrations directly and tend to be the cheapest in-person option. Book ahead through the state’s appointment system at la.omvappointments.com to cut down on waiting.⁹ Bring your completed DPSMV 1799, proof of insurance, payment, and a valid photo ID.

Public Tag Agents

Public Tag Agents are private offices licensed by the state to handle motor vehicle transactions. Lines are often shorter than at OMV offices, but the added service charge can push the total well above what you’d pay at a state office. Use the OMV office locator to find the nearest one.¹⁰

If Your Duplicate Never Arrives

For online applications, you have to wait at least 30 days from the date you applied before the OMV will act. After that, you have a 60-day window to visit an OMV field office for a free replacement.⁷ Miss the window and you’ll likely pay the fee again. For a mail application that hasn’t come back, call the OMV directly to track it down.

Leased or Financed Vehicles

If your vehicle is leased, the registration is typically in the leasing company’s name, and you may need written authorization from the lienholder or lessor to request a duplicate. Contact the leasing company first; some handle the request themselves. For a financed vehicle where you are the registered owner, the process is identical to any other owner’s. A lienholder on the title does not block you from getting a duplicate registration certificate.

Keep the Physical Copy in the Vehicle

Store the duplicate in the glove box or another secure spot inside the car. A photo of the certificate on your phone may satisfy an officer during a routine stop, but it does not meet Louisiana’s carry requirement, which calls for the actual document to be available for inspection.²
