How to Get a Duplicate Car Title in NJ: Documents and Filing

To get a duplicate car title in NJ, file the Universal Title Application (form OS/SS-UTA) with the Motor Vehicle Commission, include proof of ownership, and pay a $60 fee. You can apply in person at a Vehicle Center or by mail. Either way, the MVC prints the title at its headquarters and mails it to you — no office hands one over at the counter.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Duplicate Title

When a Duplicate Is the Right Fix

The usual reasons are the obvious ones: the original title was lost, stolen, or damaged. A few other situations also call for a duplicate. If a title never arrived after a purchase or transfer, you need one. If your loan is paid off but the lender can’t locate the original, you need one. And if you’re signing the vehicle over to an insurer after a total loss, the title has to be physically in your hands to sign.

If your original is just damaged rather than missing, bring it with your application. Falsely claiming a title is lost when applying for a duplicate is a criminal offense in New Jersey, punishable by a fine of $200 to $500, up to 30 days in jail, or both.2Justia Law. What You’ll Need to File

The form is the Universal Title Application, OS/SS-UTA. Download it from the MVC website or pick one up at a motor vehicle agency.3New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. MVC Forms It asks for the VIN, make, model, year, your name and address, and the reason you need the duplicate. Sign in blue or black ink. The MVC does not require an individual owner’s signature to be notarized; notarization applies only when a power of attorney or an institutional representative signs.4New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. You also need proof that you own the vehicle. A current or expired registration, proof of insurance, or a certified registration record all work.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Duplicate Title

If the Vehicle Is Leased or Financed

Add a written statement from the current or former lienholder. It has to include the owner’s name, the vehicle’s make, year, and VIN, and a signed declaration from a company representative confirming the lienholder does not have the original title.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. If You Have No Proof of Ownership

With no registration, no insurance card, no ownership documents at all, you’ll need the MVC’s separate no-proof-of-ownership packet, which adds form OS/SS-130 to the OS/SS-UTA. Complete both, and mail them with the $60 fee. This route is mail-only and takes longer, because the MVC has to verify ownership through its own records.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. If You’re Also Clearing a Paid-Off Lien

Duplicate title and lien removal are separate transactions that often happen together. To get a clean title after payoff, provide the MVC with proof of final payment: a signed, dated lien satisfaction letter on the lender’s official letterhead listing the owner’s name, the company’s contact information, and the vehicle’s VIN, year, and make. If the original NJ title is in hand and the lienholder has signed and dated the lien satisfaction section on the title itself, no separate letter is needed. Lien satisfaction letters from individual lienholders, as opposed to banks or finance companies, must be notarized.5New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Lien Information

How Long It Takes

Every duplicate title is printed and mailed from MVC headquarters, no matter where you applied. In-person applications are typically processed and mailed within about 7 to 10 business days. Mail-in applications take considerably longer, currently estimated at 8 to 12 weeks.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Duplicate Title

The title goes to the address on your application or the one the MVC has on file. If you’ve moved recently, update your address before applying. If the title hasn’t arrived within the expected window, contact the MVC’s Special Titles Section.

If You’re Replacing the Title to Sell the Car

Federal odometer rules apply when you transfer the vehicle. For model year 2011 and newer vehicles, sellers must disclose the odometer reading at transfer for the first 20 model years of the vehicle’s life. Model year 2010 and older vehicles follow the previous 10-year rule and are largely exempt now.6National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Consumer Alert: Changes to Odometer Disclosure Requirements The reading is written on the title itself when you sign it over, so the duplicate has to be in your possession before you can close the sale.
