How to Get a Gold Star on Your TN Driver’s License

To get the gold star on your Tennessee driver’s license, make one in-person visit to a Driver Services Center with three sets of documents: proof of identity and U.S. citizenship (or legal presence), proof of your Social Security number, and two proofs of Tennessee residency. The gold star marks your license as REAL ID-compliant, which since May 7, 2025 has been required to board domestic flights and enter many federal buildings.1Transportation Security Administration. TSA Begins REAL ID Full Enforcement on May 7 The upgrade costs the same as a standard Tennessee license.

What the Gold Star Does

The star in the upper corner tells federal screeners that Tennessee verified your identity documents against the standards set by the REAL ID Act of 2005.2eCFR. 6 CFR Part 37 – REAL ID Driver’s Licenses and Identification Cards Without it, a Tennessee license alone won’t get you through a TSA checkpoint or past the front desk of most federal buildings and military bases. A valid U.S. passport is the alternative if you have one.3Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID A standard license without the star is still fine for driving and everyday use.4TN.gov. Proof of Identity and U.S. Citizenship

Bring one document that proves both your identity and your lawful presence. For U.S. citizens, the two workable options are usually:5TN.gov. REAL ID

  • An official birth certificate issued by a U.S. state or territory vital records office, with a raised or color seal. Hospital souvenir certificates and photocopies are rejected.
  • A valid, unexpired U.S. passport.

One trap: Puerto Rican birth certificates issued before July 1, 2010 are not accepted. If yours predates that, request a replacement from Puerto Rico’s vital records office or use a passport.5TN.gov. REAL ID

Name Changes

If the name on your identity document isn’t the name you want on your license, you have to bridge the gap with certified legal documents: a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order. Every change in the chain needs its own document. Two marriages, for example, means both marriage certificates (or the intervening divorce decree plus the second marriage certificate) linking your birth name to your current one.5TN.gov. REAL ID This is where applicants most often get sent home.

If You Are Not a U.S. Citizen

Lawful permanent residents can present a Permanent Resident Card (I-551), a foreign passport stamped “Processed for I-551,” or a Permanent Resident Re-entry Permit (I-327). Applicants with temporary status can use a valid foreign passport with a valid visa and I-94 attached, a Conditional Resident Alien Card, or an Employment Authorization Card (I-766). F-1 and M-1 students also need a valid SEVIS I-20; J-1 visitors need a valid DS-2019.5TN.gov. REAL ID

Proof of Your Social Security Number

One document showing your full SSN is enough. Any of the following works:5TN.gov. REAL ID

  • Your Social Security card, unlaminated. The Social Security Administration advises against laminating the card because it obscures security features.6Social Security Administration. Can I Laminate My Social Security Card
  • A W-2 or 1099 from the last 12 months.
  • A payroll check stub showing your full SSN.

If you’ve never been issued a Social Security number, you sign a sworn affidavit in front of a driver license examiner or notary at the Driver Services Center.5TN.gov. REAL ID

Two Proofs of Tennessee Residency

You need two separate documents, each showing your name and a Tennessee physical street address. P.O. boxes don’t count, and documents generally need to be dated within the last four months. Any two of these work:7TN.gov. Proof of Tennessee Residency

  • A utility bill for landline phone, electric, water, gas, or cable. Cell phone bills are not accepted.5TN.gov. REAL ID
  • A current bank statement. Checkbook information alone doesn’t count.
  • A Tennessee vehicle registration or title. You can use one of these, but not both as your two documents.
  • A mortgage contract or deed of sale.
  • A current paycheck stub.
  • An unexpired automobile, life, or health insurance policy.
  • A Tennessee voter registration card.

Renters, note the wrinkle: a lease with a wet ink or electronic signature counts as one proof only when accompanied by a signed letter from your landlord dated within the last 30 days. You still need a second document from the list.7TN.gov. Proof of Tennessee Residency

Where to Apply and What Happens

A first-time REAL ID has to be done in person at a Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Driver Services Center. Online and mail applications aren’t offered for the initial upgrade.5TN.gov. REAL ID You can book an appointment through the Driver Services online portal to skip the walk-in line.8TN.gov. At the counter, staff review your documents, take your photo, and collect your signature. You pay the fee, receive a temporary paper license, and the permanent card with the gold star is mailed to your Tennessee address.

What It Costs

A REAL ID is priced as a standard Tennessee Class D license: $26 for the license plus a $2 application fee, totaling $28.9Justia. Tennessee Code 55-50-323 – Fees Applying at a County Clerk’s office adds a $4 administrative fee.10TN.gov. Driver License Fees

If you upgrade outside your renewal window, you pay a duplicate license fee instead: $6 for the first duplicate during a renewal cycle and $12 for any subsequent duplicate.11TN.gov. Replacing a Lost License The cheapest move, if you can wait, is to combine the upgrade with your regular renewal.

Renewing a REAL ID Later

The gold star license is valid for eight years, matching a standard Tennessee license.5TN.gov. REAL ID At renewal you may qualify to renew online, at a self-service kiosk, at a County Clerk’s office, or by mail rather than in person again. Changes to your name or other identifying information will send you back through the full document check.

If your current license expires within six months, Tennessee requires you to renew rather than order a duplicate.11TN.gov. Replacing a Lost License When expiration is close, renewing and adding the gold star in the same visit is the clean approach.
