How to Get a Louisiana Driver’s License: Permit, Tests, and Fees

To get a Louisiana driver’s license, you apply through the Office of Motor Vehicles for a Class E credential: obtain a Temporary Instructional Permit, complete a driver education course sized to your age, pass a vision screening, a knowledge test, and a road skills test, then finalize the license at an OMV field office with your identity, Social Security, and residency documents and the license fee. The path takes longer for teens because of Louisiana’s graduated licensing stages, and shorter for adults, but the pieces are the same.

Which Path Applies to You

Louisiana splits first-time applicants into two tracks. Anyone under 18 moves through a three-stage graduated system starting at age 15. Anyone 18 or older skips the stages and can move through the process in a few weeks.

Under 18: The Graduated System

At 15, you can apply for a learner’s permit after completing an approved driver education course and passing a vision screening and knowledge test.1Justia. Louisiana Revised Statutes RS 32-407 – Applications of Minors While holding the permit, you must have a licensed adult with you: a parent or guardian, any licensed adult at least 21, or a licensed sibling at least 18. No cell phone use is allowed, including hands-free. You must log at least 50 hours of supervised driving, with 15 of those at night.2Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Louisiana Graduated Driver’s License Laws

At 16, you can upgrade to an intermediate license once you’ve held the learner’s permit for at least 180 days and completed the 50 supervised hours.3Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. New Licenses The intermediate stage lets you drive alone but keeps two restrictions in place. You cannot drive between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. unless a licensed parent, guardian, adult 21 or older, or sibling 18 or older is with you.4Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Class E – Intermediate License Between 6:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., you cannot carry more than one passenger under 21 who isn’t an immediate family member, unless a licensed adult 21 or older is in the vehicle.2Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Louisiana Graduated Driver’s License Laws

At 17, the nighttime curfew and passenger limits drop away and you receive a full, unrestricted Class E license. If you’re applying for the first time at 17, you can get a learner’s license and then apply for the regular Class E 30 days later, or immediately after completing an approved 36-hour driver education course.5Louisiana State Legislature. 18 and Older: The Adult Path

Adults skip the graduated stages. You still need a Temporary Instructional Permit and driver education, but Louisiana offers a shorter pre-licensing course: six hours of classroom instruction and eight hours of behind-the-wheel training, including the skills test itself.6Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Code 32-402.1 – Driver Education Required The full 38-hour driver education course remains an option if you want more preparation.7Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Documents You Need to Bring

Louisiana requires proof of identity, Social Security number, and residency before the OMV will issue a license.8Justia. Louisiana Revised Statutes RS 32-409.1 – Application For identity, you need either one primary document plus two secondary documents, or two primary documents. Primary documents include a certified birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, certificate of citizenship, current military ID, U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner card, a permanent resident card issued after July 1, 1997, or a Native American tribal document. Secondary documents include items such as a Social Security card or a school transcript.

For your Social Security number, bring your Social Security card or another document displaying the number; the OMV verifies electronically with federal databases. For residency, bring two documents showing your Louisiana physical address, such as a utility bill, bank statement, or voter registration card. All documents must be originals or certified copies.

Non-citizens applying with a foreign passport must present valid immigration documents showing they can maintain legal presence in the United States for at least 180 calendar days, or 60 days for agricultural workers.8Justia. Louisiana Revised Statutes RS 32-409.1 – Application

Every adult applicant must also either show proof of auto insurance compliance or sign a written declaration stating they don’t own a registered vehicle. For minors, a parent or guardian handles this requirement for both themselves and the teen.9Justia. Louisiana Revised Statutes RS 32-862 – Proof of Compliance Acceptable proof includes an insurance card, the policy, or the declarations page. Originals, photocopies, and images on a phone are all accepted.

You’ll complete application form DPSMV2003 at the OMV. It asks for personal details including height, weight, eye color, and medical conditions that could affect driving. Every detail should match your supporting documents. Mismatches slow the process down.

Get the Temporary Instructional Permit First

Before you can enroll in driver education, take a knowledge test, or get behind the wheel for instruction, you need a Temporary Instructional Permit from the OMV.3Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. New Licenses The TIP applies to everyone, minors and adults alike, and you must have it in your possession during behind-the-wheel instruction and the road skills test.10Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Class E Learner’s Permit Requirements Driving schools cannot let you start without one, so get the TIP before you enroll.

Complete Driver Education

All first-time drivers must complete a driver education course through a licensed provider. Which course you take depends on age.

  • Under 18: a full driver education course with at least 30 hours of classroom instruction and 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training.6Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Code 32-402.1 – Driver Education Required
  • 18 and older: a pre-licensing course with at least 6 hours of classroom instruction and 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training, which includes the skills test.

Only certificates from OMV-licensed providers count. A course from an unlicensed school won’t be accepted no matter how many hours you put in. The OMV publishes the current list of licensed schools on its website.

Pass the Knowledge Test and Vision Screening

The knowledge test covers Louisiana traffic laws, road signs, pavement markings, right-of-way rules, railroad crossing safety, and sharing the road with motorcycles and large trucks.1Justia. Louisiana Revised Statutes RS 32-407 – Applications of Minors You need at least 80% to pass.3Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. New Licenses The Louisiana Driver’s Guide, available free on the OMV website, is the study source the test draws from.

The vision screening happens before or alongside the knowledge test. You need at least 20/40 vision in one or both eyes, with or without corrective lenses.11Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Class E – First Time Driver’s License – Adults If you pass only with glasses or contacts, a restriction code is added to your license requiring you to wear them while driving.

For minors, the driver education provider typically administers both the knowledge test and vision screening. Adults taking the pre-licensing course have their skills test administered by a licensed third-party provider.

Pass the Road Skills Test

The road skills test is a practical evaluation where an examiner watches you drive. Expect to demonstrate parallel parking, backing in a straight line, turning at intersections, lane changes, and general vehicle control in traffic. The examiner is looking for safe habits: mirror checks, signaling, appropriate speed, and correct yielding.

If you use a private vehicle for the test, it must be currently registered and insured, and you’ll present proof of both when you arrive.11Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Class E – First Time Driver’s License – Adults The vehicle also has to be in safe working condition. If the turn signals, brake lights, or windshield are defective, the examiner will cancel the test on the spot.

If you fail, you’ll wait before retesting. The OMV doesn’t publish a universal waiting period, so confirm the retake timeline with your testing provider or field office.

Fees and Finalizing at the OMV

Once you’ve passed everything, you finalize the license at an OMV field office. Book an appointment online through the OMV website before going; walk-ins are possible but appointments move faster.12Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles Home At the office, the agent reviews your documents and test results, captures a digital photograph and thumbprint, and processes payment.

The Class E license fee is $32.25, with a reduced rate of $18.75 for applicants age 70 and older. Certain field offices charge an additional service fee of up to $8.00.3Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. New Licenses A Class E license is valid for approximately six years, expiring on your birthday.

You leave with a temporary paper permit that serves as a valid driving credential while your permanent card is produced. The plastic license arrives by mail within about 30 days. If it hasn’t arrived after 30 days but within 60 days of your application date, visit any OMV field office with your receipt to get a free replacement.13Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. REAL ID or Standard License

At application, you choose between a REAL ID-compliant license and a standard one. Since federal enforcement began May 7, 2025, only REAL ID-compliant credentials are accepted to board domestic flights and enter secure federal buildings such as military bases and federal courthouses.14Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. How to Quickly Renew Your Identification Card A Louisiana REAL ID shows a gold circle with a star cutout in the upper right corner. A standard license is marked “Not for Federal Identification” and cannot be used for those federal purposes, though it remains valid for everyday identification and driving.

Getting a REAL ID requires an in-person visit to an OMV field office or public tag agent. Since first-time applicants apply in person anyway, choosing the REAL ID adds no extra trip. The same identity and residency documents cover both credentials. If you skip the REAL ID now, you can upgrade later, but you’ll need another in-person visit. Online renewals produce the standard version only.

If You’re Moving from Another State

New Louisiana residents must obtain a Louisiana driver’s license within 30 days of establishing residency. You bring the same identity, Social Security, and residency documents, plus your current out-of-state license, which you surrender when the Louisiana license is issued. If your out-of-state license is valid and unexpired, Louisiana generally waives the knowledge and road skills tests for holders of a standard passenger vehicle license. You still need to pass the vision screening and pay the fee. If your previous license has been expired for an extended period, the OMV may require you to test, and they’ll tell you at the window.
