How to Get a Missouri Tax ID Number: Apply, Bond, and Penalties

To get a Missouri tax ID number, register your business with the Missouri Department of Revenue through the MyTax Missouri online portal, which issues a confirmation within minutes, or by mailing Form 2643. Registration itself is free. You’ll need this number before you can collect sales tax, withhold state income tax from employees, or file Missouri corporate income tax.

Do You Need to Register

Most businesses operating in Missouri do. The Department of Revenue requires registration if you fall into any of these categories:1Missouri Department of Revenue. Business Tax Registration Requirements

  • You sell tangible personal property or taxable services in Missouri, such as telecommunications, fitness center memberships, or admission to amusement venues. You must register for a sales tax license and collect the 4.225% state rate plus any local taxes.2Missouri Department of Revenue. Sales and Use Tax
  • You pay wages to anyone working in Missouri. You need to register for employer withholding so you can deduct state income tax from paychecks.
  • You operate as a corporation doing business in Missouri and owe corporate income tax.
  • You sell into Missouri from out of state and your gross receipts from taxable Missouri sales exceed $100,000 in a calendar year. Remote sellers and marketplace facilitators at that threshold must register and collect vendor’s use tax.3Missouri Department of Revenue. Remote Seller and Marketplace Facilitator FAQ

The same online application also handles consumer’s use tax, unemployment tax, and tire and lead-acid battery fees, so you can register for several tax types at once.4Missouri Department of Revenue. Online New Business Registration

Get a Federal EIN First

If your business is a corporation, partnership, or LLC, or if you have employees, you need a Federal Employer Identification Number before you apply in Missouri. The state registration form asks for it.5Internal Revenue Service. Get an Employer Identification Number

The IRS online EIN tool is free and issues the number immediately. It’s available Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. Eastern, Saturday from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Eastern, and Sunday from 6:00 p.m. to midnight Eastern. Sole proprietors with no employees can often use their Social Security Number instead, though applying for an EIN keeps your SSN off business paperwork.

What to Gather Before You Start

The online system doesn’t let you save and come back, so a missing piece of information means starting over. Have all of this ready:

  • Legal business name, physical address, mailing address if different, and entity type (sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC, or corporation).
  • Federal EIN, if your entity type or employee status requires one.6Internal Revenue Service. Employer Identification Number
  • Social Security Number, address, and date of birth for each owner, officer, partner, or member.
  • An estimate of monthly sales if you’re registering for sales or use tax. The Department uses this to assign your filing frequency.
  • An estimate of monthly wages paid to Missouri employees if you’re registering for employer withholding.
  • Your charter number or certificate of authority number from the Missouri Secretary of State, if you’re a corporation or LLC.

If you’re taking over an existing business rather than starting from scratch, you’ll also need the previous owner’s name, address, and tax identification number. That path has extra risks covered further down.

The Sales Tax Bond

Registration is free, but if you’re applying for a sales tax license or vendor’s use tax license, expect a surety bond requirement. The bond equals three times your estimated average monthly sales and use tax liability. For a brand-new business, the Department estimates the amount based on your type of business.8Legal Information Institute. 12 CSR 10-104.020 – Sales and Use Tax Bonds

If you’re buying an existing business, the calculation uses three times the previous owner’s average monthly tax liability over the past twelve months. The Department will not issue your sales tax license until the bond is in place.

You don’t have to keep the bond forever. After two years of on-time filing and payment with no delinquencies, the Department can refund or release it. The bond is also released if you close your sales or use tax account, file a final return, and owe nothing. Most businesses buy a surety bond through an insurance company rather than post cash, paying a small annual premium based on the bond amount.

If You’re Buying an Existing Business

This is where new owners get burned. When you buy a business or its inventory, you can inherit the seller’s unpaid sales tax liability. Missouri law requires you to hold back enough of the purchase price to cover any taxes, interest, and penalties the seller owes. Pay the full amount without withholding, and you become personally liable for what the previous owner owed.9Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Revised Statutes 144.150

Before closing, request a tax clearance certificate from the Director of Revenue by certified mail. The Department has fifteen business days to respond with either a statement of what’s owed or a certificate confirming nothing is due. The certificate is valid for 120 days, giving you a window to close with confidence.

After You Apply

Once the Department processes your application, your Missouri tax ID number arrives by postal mail. This number is separate from your federal EIN and from any registration numbers issued by the Missouri Secretary of State or the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. Use it on all state tax filings and correspondence with the Department of Revenue.

If something’s missing, the Department will contact you. Delays usually come from a missing owner SSN, a charter number that doesn’t match Secretary of State records, or a business address that can’t be verified.

Penalties for Operating Without Registration

Selling tangible personal property in Missouri without a valid sales tax license carries a penalty of up to $500 for the first day and $100 for each additional day, capped at $10,000. Those penalties sit on top of any unpaid sales tax, interest, and other charges.10Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Revised Statutes 144.118

There’s one narrow grace period. If you’re opening a business in Missouri for the first time, the daily penalty doesn’t apply for the first twenty days. That isn’t much runway, so register before your first sale whenever you can.
