How to Get a Motorcycle Learner’s Permit in Georgia

To get a motorcycle learner’s permit in Georgia, apply at any Department of Driver Services customer service center, pass a vision screening and a two-part written knowledge exam, show REAL ID documents, and pay a $10 fee. The permit DDS issues is called a Class MP, it’s valid for six months, and you can ride on it the same day.

Who Can Apply

You must be at least 17 to apply for a Class MP permit under OCGA § 40-5-24. A 16-year-old can apply only if they have completed a driver education training course.1Justia Law. Georgia Code 40-5-24 – Instruction Permits

Applicants under 18 cannot apply alone. A parent, legal guardian, responsible adult, or authorized driver training instructor has to come to the DDS office and sign the application. If a responsible adult is signing, they also need paperwork showing their relationship to you.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. How Do I Get a Motorcycle Permit (Class MP)?

Documents To Bring

DDS follows REAL ID rules for permits, which means three categories of paperwork:

  • One primary identification document: a U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport or passport card, Certificate of Naturalization, or Certificate of Citizenship.
  • Two proofs of residence showing your name and current Georgia address, dated within the past six months. Utility bills, bank or credit card statements, a mortgage statement, voter registration card, vehicle registration, employer pay stubs, or physical postmarked U.S. mail all count. P.O. boxes do not.
  • Your Social Security number on the application. If it doesn’t verify electronically, bring your Social Security card, a W-2, or an SSA-1099.3Georgia Department of Driver Services. REAL ID Documents for US Citizens

DDS no longer uses the old paper DS-32 application. You now fill out the License/ID/Permit application online through the DDS website or the DDS 2 GO mobile app before your visit.4Georgia Department of Driver Services. DDS Forms Make sure the name and address on the form match your identification exactly. Mismatches are one of the most common reasons applicants get turned away.

The Knowledge Exam and Vision Screening

The motorcycle knowledge exam has two parts: Road Rules and Road Signs. Each has 20 questions, and you need at least 15 correct on each to pass.5Georgia Department of Driver Services. Test and Exams Information Questions cover traffic signs, right-of-way rules, lane positioning, braking, and hazards specific to two-wheeled vehicles. The Georgia Motorcycle Operator’s Manual is the main study resource and is free online. Intersection hazards, following distance, and group riding formations are frequent problem areas for first-time test takers.

Before the written test you’ll take a vision screening. DDS requires at least 20/60 acuity in one eye (with or without corrective lenses) and a 140-degree field of vision.5Georgia Department of Driver Services. Test and Exams Information Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them.

At the DDS Office

You can schedule an appointment through the DDS portal or walk in; appointments cut wait times considerably. Check in at the kiosk when you arrive. You’ll do the vision screening first, then the computerized knowledge exam. Once you pass both, you move to the service counter, finish the paperwork, and pay the $10 permit fee.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. How Do I Get a Motorcycle Permit (Class MP)?

The clerk issues a temporary paper permit on the spot. That paper is your legal authorization to ride while you wait for the plastic card to arrive by mail. Check every detail on it before you leave the building.

Riding Restrictions on a Class MP Permit

OCGA § 40-5-24(c) puts three hard limits on anyone riding with an instruction permit. It is not valid when carrying passengers, on a limited access highway, or at night.1Justia Law. Georgia Code 40-5-24 – Instruction Permits That means you ride alone, you stay off interstates and other controlled-access roads, and you’re off the bike by dark. Breaking any of these can bring a traffic citation and complicate the path to a full Class M license.

How Long the Permit Lasts

Your Class MP permit is valid for six months from the date of issue.1Justia Law. Georgia Code 40-5-24 – Instruction Permits If you don’t upgrade to a full Class M license in that window, you can renew the permit once. After the single renewal, you start over, including the knowledge exam. Knowledge exam scores themselves are only good for one year.5Georgia Department of Driver Services. Test and Exams Information

Gear and Insurance You Need Before You Ride

Georgia requires every motorcycle rider and passenger to wear a helmet on public roads. OCGA § 40-6-315 says no one may operate or ride a motorcycle without protective headgear meeting standards set by the Georgia Commissioner of Public Safety.6Justia Law. Georgia Code 40-6-315 – Headgear and Eye-Protective Devices In practice, helmets with a DOT label reading “FMVSS No. 218 CERTIFIED” on the back meet the standard.7NHTSA. Eye protection is also required. A windshield on the motorcycle does not satisfy it, and neither do regular eyeglasses or sunglasses. You need a face shield, goggles, or similar eyewear designed to block wind and debris.8Georgia Department of Driver Services. Section 3: Before You Ride

Insurance is the other legal threshold. OCGA § 40-6-11 makes operating an uninsured motorcycle a misdemeanor, and you have to keep proof of coverage on the bike or on your person while riding.9Justia Law. Georgia Code 40-6-11 – Insurance Requirements Georgia’s minimum liability coverage is $25,000 per person for bodily injury, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage.10Justia Law. Moving From the Permit to a Full Class M License

The permit exists so you can practice and move up. Georgia gives you two paths to a full Class M motorcycle license.

The first is completing an approved Georgia Motorcycle Safety Program course. The course provides motorcycles, so you don’t need to own one yet, and finishing it earns you a 90-day waiver that bypasses both the knowledge exam and the on-cycle skills test at DDS.11Georgia Department of Driver Services. Get Your Georgia Motorcycle License You still take a vision screening at DDS and pay the license fee. The 90-day clock runs from the day your course ends, so don’t delay the DDS visit.12Georgia Department of Driver Services. Motorcycle Safety Program Registration

The second is testing directly at a DDS customer service center, where you take an on-cycle skills test using your own motorcycle. The test covers low-speed control (a cone weave, a turn from a stop, a U-turn inside a painted box) and emergency reactions (a quick stop and an obstacle swerve from 12 to 18 mph).13Georgia Department of Driver Services. Section 1 Continued: Rider Skills Test for Two-Wheels The U-turn fails more riders than any other exercise.

A Class M license costs $32 and is valid for eight years.14Georgia Department of Driver Services. Fees and Terms Once it’s issued, the three permit restrictions are lifted and you can ride without them.
