To get a New Mexico ID card, you apply in person at any Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) field office, bring documents proving your identity, Social Security number (for a REAL ID), and two proofs of New Mexico residency, and pay the applicable fee. The first choice to make is which card you want: a REAL ID-compliant card, which carries a gold star and works for domestic flights and federal buildings, or a standard card marked “NOT FOR FEDERAL PURPOSES” for everyday identification. Since May 7, 2025, a REAL ID has been required to board domestic flights and enter federal facilities, so the type you pick has real consequences.1Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID
Choose Between a REAL ID and a Standard ID
A REAL ID-compliant card meets federal security standards and shows a gold star in the upper right corner. You need one to board domestic flights, enter military bases, and access most federal buildings. To qualify, you must prove lawful presence in the United States, provide a Social Security number, and show New Mexico residency.
A standard card is marked “NOT FOR FEDERAL PURPOSES.” It cannot be used for air travel or federal building access, but it works for banking, interactions with law enforcement, and local government business. The document requirements are broader, which makes the standard card available to residents who don’t have the paperwork a REAL ID demands, including undocumented residents.
Who Can Apply
Any New Mexico resident can apply for a standard ID card regardless of immigration status. REAL ID applicants must show lawful presence with an unexpired document such as a permanent resident card or employment authorization card. Foreign nationals approved for a REAL ID may receive a card valid only through their authorized period of stay rather than the standard four- or eight-year term.
You need a physical New Mexico address. A P.O. box alone does not satisfy residency. There is no minimum age, but applicants under 18 generally need a parent or legal guardian present. Unaccompanied youth experiencing homelessness can apply for a standard ID without a parent’s signature by using MVD Form 10020.2New Mexico Public Education Department. Documents to Bring
Gather everything before you go. A missing document means a wasted trip, and the office will not proceed without the full set.
For a REAL ID
You need documents in three categories:3New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division. NM REAL ID List of Acceptable Documents
- Lawful identity and age, one document: U.S. passport or passport card, certified U.S. birth certificate, or permanent resident card.
- Social Security number, one document: Social Security card, W-2, or 1099.
- New Mexico residency, two documents: utility bills (not cell phone bills), bank or credit card statements, pay stubs, or school documents such as a transcript or report card. Each must be dated within 60 days of your application.4New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division. NM REAL ID
If your name differs across documents because of marriage, divorce, or a court-ordered change, bring the connecting paperwork, such as a marriage certificate or court order, so the MVD can tie the documents together.
For a Standard ID
The identity options are broader. You can use a foreign passport from your country of citizenship or a consular identification card, among other documents.5New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division. Apply in Person at an MVD Field Office
Your first New Mexico ID card must be issued in person.6New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division. ID Cards Most locations require an appointment, which you can schedule through the MVD’s online services portal. At the counter, staff will review your documents, take your photograph, and collect the fee. You leave with a temporary ID that day, and the permanent card comes by mail.
Fees and How Long the Card Is Valid
REAL ID cards are issued for four or eight years and expire on the last day of your birth month in the fourth or eighth year after issuance. The eight-year option costs more upfront but means fewer trips later. Foreign nationals with temporary authorization may receive a card that expires with their authorized stay.
ID card fees change from time to time, and the MVD does not always list them alongside driver’s license fees. As a reference point, the MVD’s replacement fees for driving credentials are $18 for a four-year credential and $34 for an eight-year credential, with no fee for applicants 79 or older. ID card fees may differ, so confirm current pricing on the MVD website or by calling your local field office before your visit.
Renewing, Replacing, or Updating the Card Later
Once you have a card, you can renew online through the MVD’s eServices portal starting 90 days before expiration and up to two years after it expires.8New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division. Renew a Driving Credential Upgrading from a standard card to a REAL ID for the first time is not an online transaction; you have to visit an office with the full REAL ID document set. Renewing more than 90 days early gets you a replacement with the same expiration date rather than an extended term.
A lost, stolen, or damaged card can be replaced through the MVD, and the replacement keeps the original expiration date. A police report is not required for a lost or stolen card, but filing one creates a record if someone later tries to misuse your identity.
Name changes from marriage, divorce, or a court order require an in-person visit with the underlying document. Address changes can be done online through eServices or in person with updated residency proof. To change the gender marker to M, F, or X, submit the MVD’s Request for Sex Designation Change form, a self-attestation signed under penalty of perjury; no physician’s statement or court order is needed.9New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division. Request for Sex Designation Change Clerical errors made by the MVD, such as a misspelled name or wrong birth date, are typically corrected at no charge when you bring documentation showing the correct information.
Veterans can add a veteran designation to the card, which verifies military service for discounts and benefits without a separate ID.10Veterans Affairs. Types of Veteran ID Cards You will generally need a DD-214 or other separation document; ask your local field office about the full list and any fee.
