To get an Oklahoma state ID card, you apply in person at a Service Oklahoma licensing office or a licensed operator location, bring proof of your identity and Social Security number (plus two proofs of Oklahoma residency if you want a REAL ID), and pay $25 for a four-year card or $50 for an eight-year card. Any resident can apply, and there is no minimum age. Since REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025, the compliant version is the one most first-time applicants should ask for, because only it works at TSA checkpoints and federal buildings.1Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID or Standard Card
Oklahoma issues two versions of the state ID. The REAL ID-compliant card carries a gold star in the upper right corner; the standard noncompliant card does not. Since May 7, 2025, the star (or another federally accepted document such as a passport) is required to board a domestic flight, enter a military base, or get into most federal buildings.1Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID
A standard card still works for ordinary identification: opening a bank account, verifying your age, or filling out employment paperwork. Both versions cost the same, so unless you want to skip gathering the residency documents, the REAL ID is usually the better pick.
Documents to Bring
Proof of Identity
Bring one document that proves your legal name and date of birth. The most common options are a certified birth certificate or an unexpired U.S. passport.2Service Oklahoma. Service Oklahoma – REAL ID Checklist Other accepted documents include a consular report of birth abroad, a permanent resident card, a naturalization certificate, or a valid U.S. military ID.3Service Oklahoma. Required Documents
Social Security Number
You need to provide your Social Security number, but you do not have to bring the physical card. Service Oklahoma verifies the number electronically, so knowing your nine-digit number is enough.3Service Oklahoma. Required Documents
Proof of Oklahoma Residency (REAL ID Only)
For the REAL ID version, bring two documents showing your name and current Oklahoma address.2Service Oklahoma. Service Oklahoma – REAL ID Checklist Utility bills, bank statements, credit card statements, mortgage documents, and signed lease agreements all qualify. The documents must show your residential address rather than a P.O. box, and the name on them has to match the name on your proof of identity. The residency requirement is less stringent for the standard noncompliant card.
Name Change Documents
If your current legal name differs from the name on your identity document, bring proof of every name change linking the two. An official marriage certificate, a divorce decree that specifies your restored name, or a court-ordered name change will work. Each document must be an original or certified copy; notarized copies are not accepted.3Service Oklahoma. Required Documents Every link in the chain has to be accounted for, so if you have had more than one name change, bring the paperwork for each.
What It Costs
Both the REAL ID and standard versions follow the same pricing:
- Four-year card: $25
- Eight-year card: $50
- Replacement card: $25 regardless of original term length
Two groups pay nothing. Residents aged 65 or older are exempt from all ID card fees, and their cards are valid indefinitely with no renewal cycle. Veterans with a 100 percent service-connected disability rating from the VA are also exempt.4Justia Law. Oklahoma Statutes Title 47-6-105.3v4 – Issuance of Identification Card–Fees Service Oklahoma locations and licensed operators accept credit cards, debit cards, and money orders.
Applying in Person
The visit has to be in person at either a Service Oklahoma licensing office or a licensed operator location (formerly called tag agencies), because staff need to capture your photograph and digital signature.5Service Oklahoma. New State ID Card If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, either type of location can process a REAL ID.2Service Oklahoma. Service Oklahoma – REAL ID Checklist
Service Oklahoma licensing offices have a live wait-time feature that lets you check in online the day of your visit and watch your place in line remotely, so you can arrive when it is nearly your turn.6Service Oklahoma. Driving and Auto Locations Licensed operator locations handle walk-ins and tend to move faster for straightforward transactions.
During the visit you will be offered the chance to register to vote. Federal law requires state ID agencies to provide a voter registration opportunity whenever someone applies for or renews an identification document.7Department of Justice. The National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA) Accepting or declining has no effect on your ID application.
Temporary Paper ID and the Card in the Mail
At the end of your visit, you receive a temporary paper ID to use until the permanent card arrives.5Service Oklahoma. New State ID Card It carries the same personal information as the permanent card but lacks the security features of the finished product, and TSA does not accept it for air travel.2Service Oklahoma. Service Oklahoma – REAL ID Checklist If you have a flight coming up, apply at least 30 days ahead.
The permanent plastic card ships by U.S. mail, usually within 30 days of your office visit, in a plain envelope with nothing on the outside to signal what it is.2Service Oklahoma. Service Oklahoma – REAL ID Checklist If it has not shown up by then, contact Service Oklahoma to check on shipping.
A Few Rules Worth Knowing Before You Go
Oklahoma does not let you hold both a driver’s license and a state ID card at the same time. If you have both and they were issued before November 1, 2025, you can keep them until whichever one expires first, at which point you have to surrender one.4Justia Law. Oklahoma Statutes Title 47-6-105.3v4 – Issuance of Identification Card–Fees If you already have a valid Oklahoma driver’s license and just want a REAL ID credential, upgrade the license itself rather than applying for a separate card.
Applicants under 18 can get a card, but a custodial parent or legal guardian has to sign and verify the application, either in person at the office or through a notarized affidavit.4Justia Law. Oklahoma Statutes Title 47-6-105.3v4 – Issuance of Identification Card–Fees
Once you have the card, Oklahoma law gives you 10 days to apply for a replacement if you move, change counties, or change your legal name through marriage, divorce, or court order.8Justia Law. Oklahoma Statutes Title 47-6-116 – Notice of Change of Address That update also requires an in-person visit and a $25 fee unless you qualify for an exemption.
