To get a new Social Security card in North Carolina, complete Form SS-5, gather original documents that prove your identity (and, for a first-time card, your U.S. citizenship or immigration status), and submit everything to the Social Security Administration online, in person at a local field office, or by mail. The card is free, and most applicants receive it within one to four weeks. Before you start, it’s worth checking whether you actually need the physical card at all.
Do You Actually Need the Card?
The SSA itself notes that a Social Security card is not an identification document, and in most situations you only need to know your number rather than show the card.1Social Security Administration. Guard Your Card Employers can accept other documents to verify your number when you’re hired. Banks, tax preparers, and government agencies almost always just need the nine digits typed into a form. If you have your number memorized or stored securely, you may not need a replacement at all.
Some situations genuinely require the physical card. A handful of government benefit programs ask to see it, and some employers insist on the card rather than alternative documentation. If that’s your situation, the process below is straightforward.
Documents You’ll Need
Every application begins with Form SS-5, the Application for a Social Security Card. The form asks for your full legal name, place of birth, date of birth, and your parents’ names and Social Security numbers if known.2Social Security Administration. Application for Social Security Card Form SS-5 You can download it from ssa.gov or pick one up at a local office.
The supporting documents are where most people get tripped up. The SSA requires originals or certified copies issued by the agency that created them. Photocopies and notarized copies are not accepted.3Social Security Administration. Learn What Documents You Will Need to Get a Social Security Card Depending on what you’re applying for, you’ll need to prove:
- Identity, with a current (unexpired) North Carolina driver’s license, state-issued non-driver ID card, or U.S. passport.
- U.S. citizenship, if you’re applying for an original card, with a U.S. birth certificate or valid U.S. passport.
- Immigration status, if you’re not a U.S. citizen, with current documents showing lawful status and work authorization — commonly a Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551), an Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766), or a foreign passport with a Form I-94 endorsed for work.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. For a simple replacement where nothing on your record is changing, you usually only need to prove your identity. If you’re missing a birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport can substitute for both citizenship and age.
How to Apply
Online
The fastest option for a straightforward replacement is the SSA’s online portal. To use it, you must be a U.S. citizen age 18 or older, have a driver’s license or state-issued ID from a participating state, have a U.S. mailing address, and already have a my Social Security account. The online route only works for simple replacements with no changes to your name, date of birth, place of birth, or gender.5Social Security Administration. Request Your Replacement Social Security Card Online
You verify your identity through the portal, and the card is mailed to you. To confirm whether North Carolina is currently a participating state, check ssa.gov/ssnumber before you start.
In Person
If you don’t qualify for the online option, the SSA recommends scheduling an appointment at your nearest field office or card center before showing up.6Social Security Matters. A Faster and More Convenient Way to Request a Social Security Number and Card Find the closest office through the locator at ssa.gov/locator or by calling 1-800-772-1213. Bring your completed Form SS-5 and all original supporting documents so a representative can verify everything on the spot.
In-person visits are typically needed for original card applications, name changes, record corrections, and anything involving immigration documents. Handing originals across the counter avoids the risk of mailing them.
By Mail
You can also mail your completed Form SS-5 and original documents to your local SSA office. This works, but your birth certificate, passport, or immigration paperwork will be out of your hands for several weeks. Certified mail with a return receipt is a sensible precaution. The SSA returns your original documents separately from the new card once processing is complete.7Social Security Administration. How Long Will It Take to Get a Social Security Card?
Name Changes and Record Corrections
If your name has changed through marriage, divorce, or a court order, you need a new card showing your current legal name. The online portal doesn’t handle name changes, so apply in person or by mail. In addition to Form SS-5 and identity documents, provide one of the following to prove the change: a marriage document, a divorce decree, a certificate of naturalization showing the new name, or a court order.8Social Security Administration. U.S. Citizen – Adult Name Change on Social Security Card The SSA may ask to see ID in both your old and new names; identity documents in your old name can be expired for this purpose.
If your Social Security record shows the wrong date of birth, you’ll need to request a corrected card and provide documentation of the correct date. Start by answering a few questions on the SSA website to find the right submission path, or call 1-800-772-1213 and tell the representative you need to correct your date of birth.9Social Security Administration. The Card Is Free
There is no fee to apply for a Social Security card, whether it’s an original, a replacement, or a correction. Any website or service charging you to apply is not affiliated with the government. These private middlemen collect a fee for something you can do yourself at no cost, and you still have to provide your documents to the SSA.12Social Security Administration. What Does It Cost to Get a Social Security Card?
The SSA will never ask you to pay with gift cards, prepaid debit cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.13Social Security Administration. Protect Yourself from Scams If someone calls claiming to be from Social Security and demands payment or threatens to suspend your number, it’s a scam. The real SSA communicates problems by mailing a letter.
While the card is free, supporting documents may cost money. A certified copy of a North Carolina birth certificate carries its own fee. Budget for that if you need to order documents before you apply.
Limits on Replacement Cards
Federal regulations cap how many replacement cards you can get. You’re limited to three per calendar year and ten over your lifetime.14Social Security Administration. If you’ve hit the limit, the SSA can still issue a card under a hardship exception. If Your Card or Number Was Stolen
The card itself is less dangerous in the wrong hands than the number printed on it. If you suspect someone is using your Social Security number fraudulently, report it to the Federal Trade Commission at IdentityTheft.gov. The SSA directs identity theft victims to the FTC rather than handling recovery itself.17Social Security Administration. Report Stolen Social Security Number
Beyond reporting, protect your credit:
- Place a free one-year fraud alert by contacting any one of the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion). That bureau notifies the other two, and businesses must then verify your identity before issuing new credit in your name.18Federal Trade Commission. Identity Theft Recovery Steps
- Pull free credit reports from all three bureaus at AnnualCreditReport.com and look for accounts or inquiries you don’t recognize.
- Consider a credit freeze, which is free to place and remove, lasts until you lift it, and blocks most new creditors from seeing your report at all. You have to contact each bureau separately to set one.18Federal Trade Commission. Identity Theft Recovery Steps
A freeze is stronger than a fraud alert if you’re confident your number was compromised. The alert asks creditors to verify your identity; the freeze keeps them from pulling your report in the first place. Check your reports regularly afterward to catch any new fraudulent activity early.
