Identity and Lawful Status

One document can cover both. The common choices are a U.S. birth certificate filed with a state vital records office or a valid, unexpired U.S. passport. Lawful permanent residents can use a valid Permanent Resident Card. Other options include a Certificate of Naturalization, a Certificate of Citizenship, or a foreign passport with a valid U.S. visa and an approved I-94.3eCFR. 6 CFR 37.11 – Application and Documents the Applicant Must Provide

If the name on your identity document doesn’t match your current legal name, bring certified proof of each name change. A marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order linking the names will do it.1Wyoming Department of Transportation. Driver License – Lost / Renewal

Whether You Actually Need One

Since May 7, 2025, federal enforcement requires a REAL ID or another approved form of identification to board domestic commercial flights, enter certain federal facilities, and access nuclear power plants.11Transportation Security Administration. About REAL ID That is the entire reach of the law. REAL ID has nothing to do with everyday driving, voting, registering a vehicle, or interactions at a Wyoming courthouse. A standard license still handles all of that.

REAL ID also isn’t the only way through a TSA checkpoint. Any of the following lets you fly domestically without upgrading:12Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint

  • U.S. passport or passport card
  • U.S. military ID, including dependent IDs
  • DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
  • Permanent Resident Card
  • Federally recognized tribal ID
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)

TSA is also accepting certain digital IDs, including Apple Digital ID and Google ID pass, through pilot programs.12Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint If a passport already lives in your travel bag, the REAL ID is a convenience rather than a necessity. If it doesn’t, and you fly even occasionally, the trip to the exam station is worth putting on the calendar.
