How to Get a Replacement Driver’s License in Missouri

To get a replacement driver’s license in Missouri, apply either online through the Department of Revenue’s Motor Vehicle/Driver License system or in person at any Missouri license office. A duplicate of a standard Class F license costs $16.50, and the new card arrives by mail within 7 to 10 business days. The duplicate carries the same expiration date as the license it replaces.

Can You Replace It Online

Missouri’s online duplicate application is the fastest route, but not everyone qualifies. You can use it only if all of the following are true:1Missouri Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicle/Driver License System Changes

  • Your Missouri license is still valid and more than 184 days from its expiration date.
  • The DOR already has a U.S. citizenship verification indicator on your record. If your status was verified with USCIS immigration documents, you need to visit a license office instead.
  • Your driver record passes the DOR’s evaluation criteria, including reports from other states.
  • Your last transaction was not also done remotely. The DOR limits consecutive remote applications between in-person visits.

If any of those don’t apply, or you’d rather handle it in person, walk into any Missouri license office.2Missouri Department of Revenue. Missouri Driver License and Nondriver License – Section: Replacing a Lost, Stolen, or Destroyed Missouri Driver License or Nondriver ID

What to Bring to the License Office

The documents you need depend on what kind of card you’re replacing and whether you want to upgrade to REAL ID. Missouri issues two types of licenses: REAL ID-compliant cards, marked with a star, and non-REAL ID cards. Since May 2025, a REAL ID-compliant license or another federally accepted ID is required to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities.3Transportation Security Administration. All documents must be originals. Photocopies and phone screenshots are not accepted.

Duplicate of a Non-REAL ID License

Upgrading to REAL ID

If your old card wasn’t REAL ID and you want the star this time, bring the full document set:6Missouri Department of Revenue. Missouri REAL ID Information

  • One document proving your full legal name, date of birth, and U.S. citizenship or lawful status. A valid U.S. passport, certified U.S. birth certificate, certificate of naturalization, or permanent resident card each qualifies.
  • Proof of your Social Security number: a signed Social Security card (not laminated if you’re 18 or older), a W-2, an SSA-1099, or a pay stub showing your name and full SSN.7Missouri Department of Revenue. List of Acceptable Documents for REAL ID-Compliant Document Processing

What Happens at the Office

You’ll hand over your documents, have a new photo taken, and sign the application. If you still have a damaged card, bring it and the office will void it. Before you leave, you’ll receive a paper temporary license, and the permanent card is mailed to your address within 7 to 10 business days.

The temporary paper license is valid for driving while you wait, but some businesses and TSA agents may not accept a paper temporary in place of a hard card. The expiration date printed on the temporary reflects only the temporary’s own term, not the expiration of the permanent card in the mail.8Missouri Department of Revenue. What It Costs

Duplicate fees are flat because the new card keeps the original expiration date:9Missouri Department of Revenue. Permit/Driver License/Nondriver ID Fees

  • Class F duplicate: $16.50
  • Class E duplicate: $24
  • Class A, B, or C (CDL) duplicate: $29

The DOR accepts cash, preprinted personal checks made out to the Missouri Department of Revenue, cashier’s checks, money orders, and major credit and debit cards. Card payments carry a convenience fee of 2.0% plus $0.25 per transaction.10Missouri Department of Revenue. Missouri Driver License and Nondriver License

One wrinkle: if your license is within six months of expiring, the DOR may process the transaction as an early renewal rather than a duplicate. That changes both the fee and the length of the new card’s term, and you’ll choose between a three-year and six-year option.9Missouri Department of Revenue. Permit/Driver License/Nondriver ID Fees

If Your License Was Stolen

A stolen license carries identity theft risk because the card shows your full name, date of birth, and address. Report the theft to local law enforcement or the Missouri State Highway Patrol. A police report isn’t required for the replacement application, but it’s useful documentation if someone later misuses your information.

Beyond reporting the theft, place a security freeze with all three credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) so no one can open new accounts in your name. If you find your information has actually been used to open accounts or make purchases, file a report at IdentityTheft.gov to get an FTC Identity Theft Report and a recovery plan.11Federal Trade Commission. Active-duty military members and their dependents temporarily stationed outside Missouri can apply for a duplicate by mail using Form 4317. The form requires proof of military status and payment by check, money order, or credit card, with the same convenience fee on card payments.12Missouri Department of Revenue. Name Change at the Same Time
