REAL ID Compliance
Since May 7, 2025, boarding a domestic flight or entering certain federal facilities requires a REAL ID-compliant ID or another accepted document such as a U.S. passport.11Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID A gold star in the upper right corner of your Florida ID means it is compliant. If yours isn’t, replacement is a chance to upgrade, but you’ll have to go in person and bring the full document set. Cards previously issued as REAL ID compliant can be replaced online without submitting the documents again.
If Your ID Was Stolen
A stolen ID carries identity theft risk beyond the inconvenience of losing the card. Before applying for a replacement:
- File a police report with your local law enforcement agency and keep the case number.
- Visit IdentityTheft.gov, the FTC’s recovery portal, to create a personalized recovery plan.12Federal Trade Commission. When Information is Lost or Exposed
- Consider a free credit freeze with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. A freeze blocks new accounts from being opened in your name. A stolen ID contains your full name, date of birth, address, and photo, which is enough for someone to attempt fraud.
Then follow the standard replacement process. Mention that the card was stolen when you apply, and bring the police report or case number. The fee is still $25, but the documented report helps if fraudulent activity surfaces later.
