How to Get a San Joaquin County CCW Permit: Cost and Training

To get a San Joaquin County CCW permit, you apply online through the Sheriff’s Office Permitium portal, clear a state eligibility checklist, complete an approved 16-hour training course with a live-fire qualification, and pay $233 in government fees for a standard two-year permit. Training is billed separately by the instructor. Most applicants receive a decision within a few months of a completed submission.

Who Qualifies

California Penal Code Section 26150 tells the Sheriff to issue a CCW license to any county resident who is at least 21, is not a “disqualified person” under Section 26202, has finished the required training, and is the DOJ-registered owner of every firearm that will appear on the permit.1California Legislative Information. California Code PEN 26150 – License to Carry a Concealed Firearm You do not need to show “good cause,” and there is no subjective “good moral character” review. The Sheriff works from a concrete list.

Under Section 26202, you are disqualified if any of the following apply:

  • The application, investigation, or a psychological assessment shows you are reasonably likely to be a danger to yourself, others, or the community.
  • You are, or within the past five years were, subject to a restraining order, domestic violence protective order, or similar court order.
  • You were convicted within the past ten years of a hate crime, a firearms-related misdemeanor under Section 29805, or a comparable federal or other-state offense.
  • You have a history of reckless or unlawful use, display, or brandishing of a firearm.
  • You were incarcerated or placed on probation within the past five years for a controlled-substance offense.
  • You were convicted within the past five years of DUI or public intoxication, or were found to be a habitual user of intoxicating substances.

Documents and Firearm Registration

Every firearm you want listed on the permit has to be registered in your name with the California DOJ before you apply. Registration can take several months to process, so start that well ahead of anything else.1California Legislative Information. California Code PEN 26150 – License to Carry a Concealed Firearm There is no statutory cap on how many firearms you can list, but only five fit on a permit card; additional firearms mean additional cards, all of which you must carry when armed.

The application itself uses California DOJ form BOF 4012, accessible through the Permitium portal, and asks for the make, model, caliber, and serial number of each listed firearm.4California Department of Justice. • A valid California driver’s license or state ID showing your current address.
  • Proof of San Joaquin County residency. Voter registration and a homeowner’s property tax exemption are strong evidence under state law, along with other documents showing more than a temporary presence. Training and Live-Fire Qualification

New applicants complete at least 16 hours of instruction from an instructor on San Joaquin County’s approved list.5San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office. The course includes a live-fire qualification. You must shoot each firearm you want on the permit and pass a standardized course of fire. Fail, and you cannot complete the application until you retake and pass. Expect to pay roughly $100 to $260 to the instructor, depending on the vendor and the number of firearms you qualify with. Instructor fees are separate from the government fees below.

How to Apply and What It Costs

Start on the San Joaquin County Permitium portal. You create an account, upload your documents, and pay the initial fee. For a standard two-year permit, that first payment is $153: a $20 filing fee plus a $133 DOJ LiveScan fee.7Permitium. After you submit, the Sheriff’s Office schedules an in-person appointment to take your fingerprints for the LiveScan background check. Both the California DOJ and the FBI run the results, which pull in criminal history, mental health records, and any flags in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. Where the Permit Doesn’t Let You Carry

A CCW permit is not carry-anywhere. Penal Code Section 26230 designates “sensitive places” where concealed carry stays prohibited even for permit holders. As of a March 2025 DOJ bulletin, 20 of the 26 designated locations are actively enforced:9California Department of Justice. Information Bulletin – Additional Restrictions on CCW License Holders Carrying Concealed Firearms in Certain Sensitive Places

  • Schools (K–12 zones, preschools, and childcare facilities)
  • Colleges and universities
  • Government buildings (state, local, and court buildings)
  • Police stations and detention facilities
  • Parks, playgrounds, athletic facilities, and youth centers
  • State parks and Department of Fish and Wildlife property
  • Bars and restaurants that serve alcohol
  • Casinos and gambling establishments
  • Stadiums, arenas, amusement parks, zoos, and museums
  • Public libraries
  • Airports and passenger vessel terminals
  • Nuclear Regulatory Commission property
  • Polling places

Six other categories were designated as sensitive places but sit under a federal court injunction as of that bulletin: hospitals and medical facilities, public transit, places of worship, financial institutions, large permitted public gatherings, and private commercial property open to the public.9California Department of Justice. Renewing Your Permit

A standard permit is valid for up to two years from the date of issuance.11State of California – Department of Justice – Office of the Attorney General. Timing matters. Starting January 1, 2026, you must submit your renewal within 90 days of the expiration date. Miss that window and the Sheriff treats you as a new applicant: the full 16-hour course, a fresh background check, and the full initial fee schedule. The Sheriff has up to 120 days to process a renewal.8California Legislative Information. California Code PEN 26205 – Notice to Applicant

If You’re Denied

A denial must be in writing and must identify which disqualifying factor you failed.8California Legislative Information. California Code PEN 26205 – Notice to Applicant From that notice, you have 30 days to file a “Request for Hearing to Challenge Disqualified Person Determination” with San Joaquin County Superior Court. If the Sheriff offers an internal appeal, you may have to use that first; internal appeals are resolved within 60 days, and an unsuccessful outcome opens a new 30-day window to go to court.12California Legislative Information. At the hearing, the burden is on the government. The district attorney has to prove by a preponderance of the evidence that you are a disqualified person under Section 26202.
