How to Get a State ID Online in NJ: MVC Limits and 6 Points

You cannot get a first-time state ID online in New Jersey. Every initial non-driver identification card requires an in-person appointment at a Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) Licensing Center. What you can do through the MVC website is renew an ID you already have or order a duplicate if yours was lost, stolen, or destroyed.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. What the MVC Website Handles

If you already hold a New Jersey non-driver ID and it’s near expiration, the MVC renewal portal will process it without a trip to an agency. The renewal fee is $24, the same as the original card.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Non-driver Identification Card

Lost your card? A duplicate costs $11 and can be ordered online through the MVC’s duplicate portal.2New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Lost or Stolen Licenses – How to Get a Duplicate The same option covers a replacement showing an updated address. Either way, the card ships to you by mail; even in-person duplicate transactions are mailed rather than printed at the counter.

Online service has real limits. If you need to change your name, correct your date of birth, or upgrade from a standard ID to a REAL ID, the website can’t help. Those transactions must happen at a Licensing Center.

First-Time Applicants: In Person Only

Every initial non-driver ID has to be issued at an MVC Licensing Center by appointment.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Non-driver Identification Card Walk-ins generally aren’t accepted for first-time applications, so schedule through the MVC website before you go.

At the appointment you’ll hand over your identity documents, sit for a photo, and provide a signature. The MVC takes American Express, Mastercard, Visa, Discover, checks, money orders, and cash for the $24 fee.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. The 6 Points of ID

New Jersey verifies identity through a “6 Points of ID” system. You need a combination of documents that adds up to at least six points, and you must submit at least one from the primary list and one from the secondary list.6New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. 6 Points of ID

Primary documents establish your core identity and carry the highest point values. Examples include a U.S. birth certificate or certified copy, a U.S. passport or passport card, and a Certificate of Naturalization. Secondary documents fill in the balance and include items such as a Social Security card, a bank statement, or a school photo ID with transcript. One rule that catches people: no more than two one-point documents can count toward your total.7New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. New Jersey Standard License and Non-Driver ID Requirements

On top of the six points, you’ll need two more things:

  • Social Security verification. Provide your SSN so the MVC can verify it with the Social Security Administration. Without an SSN, you can submit proof of an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number or an affidavit.6New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. 6 Points of ID
  • Proof of New Jersey residency. At least one document showing your name and current NJ address, such as a utility or credit card bill from the past 90 days, a bank statement from the past 60 days, or a property tax bill.8New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. 6 Points of ID Verification

Every document must be an original or a certified copy. Photocopies won’t be accepted, and documents not in English must come with a certified translation.9Legal Information Institute. Standard ID or REAL ID

This is the decision most first-time applicants underweight. Since May 7, 2025, the federal government requires a REAL ID-compliant card (or an accepted alternative like a passport) to board domestic flights and enter certain federal buildings.10Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID New Jersey issues both a standard non-driver ID and a REAL ID version, and the REAL ID carries a gold star in the upper corner.11New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. NJMVC REAL ID

A standard NJ ID still works for everyday needs: proving your age, opening a bank account, dealing with state agencies. It won’t get you through a TSA checkpoint on its own. Travelers without a REAL ID or accepted alternative now face a $45 fee through TSA’s ConfirmID program, and even after paying, identity verification isn’t guaranteed.10Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID

The document requirements for REAL ID overlap heavily with the standard ID, but check the Document Selector before you go. If you already hold a standard ID, you can upgrade at your next renewal or by booking a separate appointment. The upgrade cannot be done online.

How Long the Card Lasts

A New Jersey non-driver ID expires in the fourth calendar year after it was issued, on your birthday.5Justia. New Jersey Revised Statutes Section 39:3-29.5 – Expiration Get your card in June 2026 with an October birthday, and it expires in October 2030. If your birthday doesn’t land on a real calendar day in the expiration year (February 29 in a non-leap year, for instance), the card expires on the last day of your birth month.

One exception: IDs issued to applicants who are blind or have a disability are valid for life unless the holder cancels them.5Justia. New Jersey Revised Statutes Section 39:3-29.5 – Expiration

When your card is up for renewal, the online portal opens back up. Until then, the physical card in your wallet is the whole system.
