How to Get a Temp Tag in Florida: Fees, Duration, and Limits

To get a temp tag in Florida, the path depends on how you bought the vehicle. If you bought from a licensed Florida dealership, the dealer prints the tag for you at the point of sale. For a private sale or any situation where a dealer isn’t involved, you go to a county Tax Collector’s office (or an authorized agent) with your ID, proof of ownership, and proof of Florida insurance, and pay roughly $5 for a tag that’s typically good for 30 days.¹

If You Bought From a Dealer

Licensed dealers issue the temporary tag themselves through the state’s Electronic Temporary Registration system, which prints the tag on the spot once your information is submitted.² Bring a valid photo ID and proof of Florida-compliant insurance before you drive off the lot.

The dealer-issued tag lasts 30 days. If the dealer’s title and registration paperwork gets delayed, they can print one more 30-day tag for the same vehicle, but that’s the ceiling. No third dealer-issued tag will print for that vehicle under your name.³

When You Get the Tag From the Tax Collector

Any time a dealer isn’t in the picture, the tag comes from a county Tax Collector’s office or authorized agent. Private sales are the common case, but state law recognizes several others:¹

A private or casual sale between individuals.
A vehicle sold in Florida to an out-of-state resident who needs to transport it home.
A vehicle that still needs a VIN verification, weighing, or emission test before it can be registered.
An application for a personalized or specialty plate that takes time to manufacture.
A transfer of a valid out-of-state title that still has an active lien.
An out-of-state resident subject to Florida registration who first needs ownership documents from their home state.
Bank or credit union repossessions being shown for sale by an institution that isn’t a licensed dealer.

The FLHSMV also has discretion to issue a tag in situations not spelled out in the statute, as long as you can show a real need and a permanent plate isn’t yet available.

What to Bring and What It Costs

At the Tax Collector’s counter you’ll need:³

A valid, unexpired photo ID (driver’s license or state ID card).
Proof of ownership: the certificate of title signed over to you, or a bill of sale from the seller.
Proof of Florida insurance meeting the state minimums of $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection and $10,000 in Property Damage Liability for four-wheeled vehicles. Motorcycles and trailers are exempt from the insurance proof requirement for a temporary tag.⁴
Form HSMV 83091, the Application for Temporary License Plate. You can fill it out at the office or download it in advance.⁵

The tag itself is $2 by statute.¹ The Tax Collector adds a $2.50 service fee, and branch offices may add another $0.50, so budget around $5 total. That’s more than the $2 figure often quoted online.

How Long the Tag Is Good For

Florida law authorizes four temporary tag durations, and the reason you need the tag determines which one you get:¹

10 days when the vehicle still needs to be weighed, emission tested, or have its VIN verified.
30 days for most situations, including private sales, dealer purchases, and out-of-state buyer transport.
60 days when you’re transferring a valid out-of-state title with an active lien, or you’re active-duty military with a Florida license stationed outside the state.³
90 days if you’re waiting on a personalized or specialty plate to be manufactured, or you’re temporarily employed in Florida.⁶

The clock runs from the date the tag is issued, not the date you signed the bill of sale. If a dealer prints your tag three days after paperwork, day one is the print date.

The Two-Tag Limit

Florida caps temporary tags at two per person per vehicle. After two 30-day tags, no one, dealer or Tax Collector, can issue you a third for the same car.¹ That gives you 60 days of standard tag coverage to get permanent registration done.

One exception exists. If an unresolved consumer complaint is blocking your registration, such as a title defect the seller didn’t disclose, the FLHSMV can authorize additional tags while the complaint is worked out.¹ You’d have to contact FLHSMV directly; a Tax Collector office can’t grant that on its own.

If You Drive on an Expired Tag

The penalties climb with the conduct:

Expired seven days or less: a noncriminal infraction treated as a nonmoving violation, similar to a parking ticket.⁷
Expired more than seven days, or any other unlawful use: a noncriminal infraction treated as a moving violation, which means points on your driving record and a larger fine.⁷
Intentionally using a temporary tag to avoid registering a vehicle: a first-degree misdemeanor, up to one year in jail.
Issuing a temporary tag to a fictitious person or entity to conceal the real owner: a third-degree felony, up to five years in prison.

The Title Transfer Deadline Runs Alongside

Getting a temporary tag doesn’t extend your title transfer window. After a private sale, you have 30 calendar days to submit a title transfer application to a motor vehicle service center, and missing that deadline triggers a late transfer penalty on top of the normal title costs.⁸ The 30-day tag and the 30-day title deadline run on roughly the same clock, so treat one expiration as the other’s reminder.
