How to Get a Temporary ID in Texas: Documents, Costs, and Limits

To get a temporary ID in Texas, book an appointment at a Department of Public Safety driver license office, bring documents proving your identity, Social Security number, and Texas residency, and pay the fee based on your age. You walk out the same day with a paper receipt that includes your photo and works as your legal ID for 60 days while your permanent card is printed and mailed.1Department of Public Safety. Documents to Bring

DPS requires three categories of documents. Missing any one of them means you’ll be turned away, so gather everything before your appointment.

  • Proof of identity (one document): An unexpired U.S. passport or a certified copy of your birth certificate. Non-citizens can use a certificate of citizenship or permanent resident card.
  • Proof of Social Security number (one document): Your Social Security card is the simplest. A W-2 or 1099 showing your full SSN also works.
  • Proof of Texas residency (two documents): Two separate documents showing your name and current Texas address, such as a lease, utility bill, bank statement, or mortgage document.

If your name differs from what’s on your birth certificate, bring legal proof of the change, such as a marriage certificate or court order linking the two names.4Texas.gov. Texas REAL ID

When the Permanent Card Arrives
