How to Get a Texas Employer’s State ID Number

A Texas employer state ID number is really two numbers from two agencies. The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts issues an 11-digit Taxpayer ID for sales tax and franchise tax. The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) issues a separate account number for state unemployment tax. Neither one is your federal EIN, and the two agencies don’t share systems, so you handle them separately whether you’re looking one up or registering for the first time.

Which Number You Need

Most Texas employers end up needing both, but for different reasons:

  • The Comptroller’s 11-digit Taxpayer ID covers sales and use tax and the Texas franchise tax. Any business selling taxable goods or services, or any entity subject to franchise tax, needs it.1Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Identify Taxpayer
  • The TWC Account Number is used only for reporting employee wages and paying state unemployment tax. Every employer meeting the liability threshold needs one, whether or not they also hold a Comptroller Taxpayer ID.2Texas Workforce Commission. Your federal EIN doesn’t substitute for either one. State agencies won’t accept it in place of the Texas-issued numbers.

Finding a Comptroller Taxpayer ID You Already Have

If you registered before and just can’t put your hands on the number, start with your own paperwork. The 11-digit Taxpayer ID appears on the original sales tax permit that was mailed to you at registration, on every piece of official correspondence from the Comptroller, and on any sales tax or franchise tax return you’ve filed. If you use Webfile, it shows on your account dashboard once you log in.

For login or password recovery, the Comptroller’s eSystems portal has self-service tools. You verify your identity with the business’s federal EIN, legal name, and ownership details. The Webfile system for franchise tax can also retrieve your Webfile number through an automated phone line at 1-800-442-3453 if you can provide confidential information from a prior return, such as total revenue or the amount of your last payment.3Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. If self-service doesn’t work, call the Comptroller’s main line at 1-800-252-8880. Have your federal EIN and legal business name ready. A representative can pull the number after verifying your identity.

Finding a TWC Account Number You Already Have

The TWC Account Number appears on the Employer Liability Notice that was mailed after you registered, on every quarterly wage report you’ve filed, and inside the Unemployment Tax Services (UTS) portal under your account profile. If your UTS login still works, that’s the fastest route.

Without portal access or prior records, call the TWC tax department at 1-866-630-3739 with your federal EIN and legal business name.4Texas Workforce Commission. Registering With the Comptroller

If you’ve never registered, the application runs through the Comptroller’s eSystems portal. There’s no fee for a sales tax permit, though the Comptroller may require a security bond depending on your circumstances.5Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.
